Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Reader Sun Dec 04, 2016 11:23 am

Prayers for the campaign
Since the razing of the Sept of remembrance many years ago, King’s Landing has nothing to rival the Starry Sept at Oldtown, but the Street of the Sisters does not lack for grand septs.
Nobles gather between the hills named for Visenys and Rhaenys, swept up in a great wave of religious fervour as the kingdom goes to war, or at the very least recognising the wisdom to going along with public opinion.
Orthodoxy appears on the rise, with the Faith seeking to reassert its authority over social mores. Obscure old failings and deviations resurface, with Septons condemning House Blackwood’s historic wars against House Bracken, although cooler heads note the recent troubles in Battle Valley did not feature such outrages.
Queen Alicent is ever present during these times, spending many hours in prayer and her other waking hours at charitable works, giving food and clothing to families whose husbands are making ready to depart for war. A great hue and cry goes up one day as King Viserys accompanies her one day, but the plump monarch slips on a marble step as he and his wife leave the Sept, and only a reassuring arm from his wife steadies him. A gasp goes up from the crowd, but Queen Alicent proclaims “See, we must all support our King and the realm in these troubled times,” and Ser Willis Fell of the Kingsguard swiftly moves alongside her to aid the King. Ser Criston Cole is a constant companion to the Queen, both serving as a bodyguard and a constant companion. Following the Queen’s example, the greens at court flock to the Septs near Visenya’s hill.
Princess Rhaenyra favours the Septs nearer her near namesake’s hill, making a small, heavily guarded procession each night. The torchlit march is a striking, beautiful sight, but few small-folk are involved given the resentment some septons still attempt to whip up against the Targaryens in general and the Princess in particular, given the wild stories of her life so far. Perhaps to avoid provoking further trouble, Prince Daemon absents himself from these marches.
In contrast, Prince Daeron the Daring keeps a constant, quiet vigil in one Sept, arriving with plain bread and water and not moving for days. Few take much notice, busy with their own devotions, or the public demonstration of supposed devotions.
In these troubled times, many seek out the support of the influential Septon Arlyn, a noted firebrand from House DUlver in the Riverlands, famous for condemning Ser Benjen Frey, and just as startlingly for speaking up for Ser Themoreo Tullison, despite his brutality in suppressing the revolt in Battle Valley. Lord Marsten found himself much in demand too after being granted a rare audience with the High Septon himself after a rare visit to King's Landing, helping reinforce House Marsten's reputation for piety despite the Lyras heresy and Lady Marsten's unconventional rule.

Corrine had gained a reputation for the unconventional, and so some of the Faith were wary of her in that regard. However, she silenced a great many naysayers with her exemplary show of devotion.
Splitting her time between prayer at Rhaenys' Hill, and a longer spell of prayer, vigil, and fasting at the Street of Sisters, Corrine threw herself whole-heartedly into appeals to the Seven. Choosing simple garb, and putting herself through a strict fast, few could doubt her sincerity.

Her prayers were often for peace and good to prevail, for the Seven to help protect the smallfolk, as many Lords & Ladies would fail to do so. At Rhaenys' Hill, she prayed, very quietly, for the King to abdicate in favour of Rhaenyra, to avert the impending civil war.
But, most of all, she returned over and over to one prayer in particular.

Please, bring Ben home safe.

rolls, nasty rolls.:

Septon Arlyn spent time in prayer and contemplation. As he fasted he heard a familiar voice

Son, it is time to use your fame for good, show the people the true way to devotion.

As you wish Father

Septon rises from the Sept he had been praying in, looks into the fathers eyes and makes a sign of the seven. As he turns around he notices quite a few garments of green, but also some speckles of black. As he begins to walk down the middle Isle of the Sept he sees the smiles of of hundred faces, the slow mummur that had begun to accompany the Septon where he walked died down as he approaches the steps. Still be catches a few phrases being spoken "I hear he found the hammer... He spoke out against Benjen Frey, heard he called for his head before Tully sentenced him... Well I heard he tackled a zealot who was going to blow up the cave, didn't you hear the song?" I did not do any of those things, it was merely you working through me, I see that now. Hopefully I can get them to see it as well

Septon Arlyn walkes through the large doors and pauses at the top of the red stone steps. as he stops and gestures that he is about to speak, he sees the nobles and smallfolk gathered, the smallfolk being "assisted" to the back by the nobles and their guardsmen. The Septon feels the Tension building between the two groups and so raises his left hand, and gestures with his right for those standing near him to sit, to allow everyone to see him more clearly.

"My Lord, Ladies, and gentle folk, are we not all equal before the gods? Does it serve our interests to place one person above the other? Come let the children go forth, for it is in them that our futures lie!" Septon Arlyn hears a small disturbances issue through the gathered crowd, but no one appears to move to allow the children forward. The Septon persues a more direct line of remarks. "My Lords and Ladies, if it was not for the smallfolk working in your fields, would we not all go hungry. The children deserve to hear this, for it is in them that we have a hope to end this feuding! If we all but follow the laws that the gods have ordained then our lives will be the better for it. How let them come" He commands with more authority. The nobles dressed in green, begrudgingly move aside, and smallfolk children gather around the Septons feet.

"The Seven who are one may seem diametrically opposed at times. In fact some believe that they are Seven different entities, like so many different spirits of the woods. For how can the innocence of the Maid possibly exist with the clamor of the warrior? How can the Mothers Mercy possibly coexist with the same entity of the Fathers Judgement?"

Septon Arlyn gives a moment for the crowd to mumble and discuss these revelations before raising his hands again for silence.

"It may be difficult to see, but they are actually not so very different. The Seven who are one live a life different from you and me. It is important to remember that even though we try to perfect ourselves each day, we are not supposed to know the will of the Gods, just as we can not comprehend them. But just as each facet of the Gods is unique and work together to create a perfect whole, so to do the laws of man and The Seven Pointed Star show us how to live in harmony with one another. My Brothers and Sisters of the faith, Little Children, Let us not forget that it is by coming together that we are made strong. Each of us may have different opinions, but it is through binding together through shared faith that we may overcome any obstacle placed in front of us. Now Let us pray and move through the streets. Let those who have plenty share with those who do not. Let us show the Seven that we stand united under them against this threat posed by the Triarchy , or by hunger. Only together can we defeat any obstacle placed before us to test our faith in the gods. Let us sing their praises as we march through the streets, showing Charity and goodwill to all!" With that Septon steps forward, leading the crowd through the streets. The Septon begins handing out alms to the poor, bringing food and words of comfort to the sick on the streets, his following behind him growing and shrinking with each pass of the bend until it begins to get too dark, and the Noble Folk return to their safety while the Septon continues his work, long into the night, surrounded by the smallfolk who did not leave the Septons side as be continues his prayers and works for peace.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Baelon Drakeson Sun Dec 04, 2016 2:13 pm

Baelon is not a particularly pious man. In fact, he spent his knighthood vigil making thinking about where to go and what to do once he had left Dragonstone. No - he had more faith in his own drive and innate potential, and in the power of the living 'gods' of flesh and bone, scale and fire; they are not just silly stories keeping people constrained, docile, and controllable.

However, he also learned fairly quickly that going through the motions was usually enough for others to see you as pious - or at least, not impious or heretical.
He of course chose Rhaenys’ Hill - not only because it was the Princesses choice, but for relative proximity to the Dragonpit. He dared not go there, not yet; but while he was "praying" his thoughts could go anywhere they pleased.

"Praying" Reputation: 2#4d6+2 16 17 vs TN 9 is 2 DoS each.
"Praying" Dedication: 2#4d6k3 8 10 vs TN9 is 0, 1 DoS respectively.
"Praying" Streetwise: 3d6 13 vs TN 15, fails.

Result: 5 DoS

Outcome: Bupkus.
Inelligible for G/B [Stepstones track]
Insufficient DoS for Glory [Bastard Born].
No Critical failures.
Failed to learn about Prince Daerion (who's not "the Daring" just yet - he gets that sobriquet in the Dance).

Four dedication rolls in this phase so far, and they've all been well below average results. What's that say about Baelon? Suspect
I Almost used my Pious equivalent on one of those dedication rolls (for the irony of it), but decided to save it for the "main event" of the Phase.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Nathaniel Mason Sun Dec 04, 2016 3:49 pm

Nathan knelt in the small Sept on the street of the Sisters in his usual spot before the statue of the Stranger. Today he gave the name of a stableboy, a wan and scrawny boy with flashing eyes and crooked smile killed in a fit of pique by a hedge Knight for accidentally injuring his horse.  He also gave the name of the Knight who had died a few days later of a mysterious illness.

The Sept was busy, filled with the noble and wealthy seeking the blessings of the Seven; some out of Faith, many more out of pragmatism or appearance.  The Septon leading the sermon, conscious of the Highborn and looking to raise the standing of his small Sept, included some pointed words about succumbing to the sins of the flesh, but astutely took it no further.  Whether that was due to Nathan's reputation or out of fear of a man who openly and consistently prayed to the Stranger, he could not say.

His thoughts returned to those who had fallen, both friend and enemy.  He ended his prayers with a short one of good will to both.  Death elevated souls above the petty conflicts of this world.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Gwyneth Drakeson Sun Dec 04, 2016 4:28 pm

It had been some time since Gwyn had visited a sept. There wasn't a sept to speak of at Caladan; a small shrine of sorts in the village, but no real services were held there. It was a place for the quietly devout. The hall had a room set aside for a similar purpose.

Gwyn had enjoyed, in the past, donning the mantle of piety in public. She appreciated the irony of it, and the utility of it. She wasn't sure if she believed in the Seven...and if they did exist, she did not believe that they troubled themselves much with the antics of humankind. To her it seemed far more likely that someone, long ago, had decided that there were principles in humanity that deserved respect and recognition, and to make it easier to explain to people they personified them. That, to her mind, was fine. But look at all the things that had been affixed onto those simple principles since.

Today felt different. After the fracas on the docks, it suddenly seemed like maybe appealing to these mysterious beings...or perhaps just humanity's better nature...was a worthy pursuit. It was, Gwyn thought, a little funny how she still knew how to go through the motions of prayer. To light the candles. The posture and pose of the kneel. The words even went through her mind, though she didn't give them voice. They would be sham, and this was something she was feeling for once.

Oh gods. Whatever you are. Help me protect what's dear to me. Help me save what can be saved.

Post by Ser Walton Dulver Sun Dec 04, 2016 5:03 pm

Ser Walton was born in light of Seven and piety ordered him to be in Sept much earlier than others. He came tonight to ask for guardianship and strength in upcoming events. Before moving to battle, he always seeked aid in prayers. There was no better place to calm down and feed his inner warrior, as Ser Garred liked to say. Young Dulver also left long time after others, as soon as he finally found peace and silence in his mind. He was ready for whatever destiny had prepared for him.

Post by Ereth Redwain Sun Dec 04, 2016 5:45 pm

While many lords went to the septs of their colors, Ereth was more than happy to go to one of the smaller, but still well made septs to do prayer. Yet every sept was filled with different kind of people, which cost Ereth a few coins of charity to beggars and the Sept to be able to find a small little place to pray in peace.

Ereth prayers ere never long, but it was good to focus and think of the things to come and the current situations away from anyone that might know him and with some peace, but some of the best things can be learned when people don´t think you are paying attention.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Aerion Storm Sun Dec 04, 2016 6:23 pm

It's a shame, Aerion thinks, new plate mail clanking softly as he walks the crowded King's Landing streets.  Even prayer is divisive.  We ask even the Seven to take sides, Green against Black.

Much and more is on the squire's mind.  The unfortunate partisanship among the kingdom, the new division between those who honor the royal family.  He thinks about his Red Lady when he knows he shouldn't.  He wishes he were a knight -- the old wish, the steady wish, the wish that's shaped his whole life -- and might be able to make up his own mind about what sept to visit, instead of being steered towards one or another.  He worries about going to war, almost as an afterthought, and wonders what that says about him.

On the bright side, such as it is, his morose mien passes for thoughtful and reverent, even here, just walking the cobbles.

When he arrives at the sept, just one among many, he tries to wipe his mind clean. He can't. He never can, except when he's jousting. When the visor narrows the whole world to just his horse, his lance, and his opponent, all the rest falls away. But here, in prayer? Not a chance. It bubbles up, instead. Ever slender white hand and head full of black hair he sees could be her. Every bold Ser he hears should be him. Every prayer he hears, he can't help but think 'prayers don't keep you safe in war, training does.' He is not -- not right this second -- a particularly pious man, nor giving a charitable ear to the piety of others.

Still, he tries.

Mother, heal those of us who are struck down fighting the Wyls. Crone, show our leaders the way to victory. Smith, thank you for this armor, my shield, my sword. I will use your tools as well as you, or try to. Warrior, you know my heart. Let it not falter. I'll speak to you again later.

Maiden. He stays there, hesitates, mind filled with kisses and silk instead of anything holy. Thank you.

Father. Aerion stands, armor clanking, and turns to leave. I am trying.

And, last and least, Stranger, the squire steps back out onto the streets. I'll see you soon enough.

Nope

Loreia's breastplate reflects sunlight and candlelight with marked luster wherever she walks. Her hair, tied back for once, hangs down in back instead of flowing like a cape to her shoulders. Clean and plain-looking for humble prayer, not immaculate and perfumed.

First visiting the godswood in the Red Keep, she kneels before the oaken heart tree, laying her sheathed blade in front of her, staring into the carved countenance of Old Gods' watchful gaze. You know me better than I Know myself. One cannot lie to you, but hear this: "I go now to the Seven to say prayers I mean with all sincerity. If you are with me, bear steel alongside your faithful. Fill our hearts with courage, and fill our enemies with grim dread to know that we are coming."

In the sept, she lights a candle for each of the Seven:

Father, judge me with full clarity. Weigh every unrepented deed against my soul. My fate in the next life is yours to decide, and I am ready. Warrior, we go now to war, and I beg for your favor. If I must count myself among those who give their lives for victory, give my death meaning. Smith, the most well-made arms and armor still yield to your designs. In all our efforts, bless us with diligence and earnest in every role. Maiden, the innocence of children and virtue of all are not ours to take. Protect them from the horrors of war, and warn us not to levy our will upon them. Mother, if we wished for your favor, we would not be going to war. Bless us with your mercy, help us cling to life, not for ourselves but for those waiting for us at home. Crone, wisdom does not guide us to war, but bless us with humility and our commanders with sharpness of mind. Guide us on this dark path.

At the Crone, the Shieldmaiden glances over at the Stranger with some hesitation. Finally, she walks over and stands directly in front of His effigy without a candle, amid the perverse few bowing their heads before the ferryman of the dead. She stands straight and stiff and looks him in the eye.
Though I go now not to seek you, I court you in every conflict. I know you seek me, but know that I am unafraid.

The Stranger's dead, eyeless sockets merely stare back, his jaw locked in a permanent macabre grin. Silent as the grave.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Theomore Tullison Sun Dec 04, 2016 8:59 pm

Theomore usually wouldn't count himself among the pious, he believed in the gods, just not very convinced that they ever gave a damn. And if they did, then the seven pointed star was wrong. Leading to the conclusion that it was wrong either way. Still, that particular book was not without it's wisdom. Wisdom he had not taking much stock in. But never too late to begin, so he had started reading as of late, feeling bad about himself every time he did. Prayers he did not believe in, though, because if the gods did not give a damn, what point would there be to it? Reflection, however, reflection turned a man into a better one where prayers only wasted time and thoughts on things that would change nothing. And septs invited to that just as much as prayer. He also believed in being seen where it was expected of him to be seen. And thus here he was, reflecting upon his deeds. Too many bad ones, and more to come. Was it possible to add enough good things to the other part of the scale to make it tip? To make him depart this life having added a positive contribution to the world. For his own sake, he had to try, no matter how futile such an attempt might be.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Triston Tollett Mon Dec 05, 2016 2:13 pm

Triston had prayed for many years.  He had asked for the favor of the gods, but he wasn't sure he ever received it.  They were selfish prayers, undoubtedly.  He wanted things as a child and as a young man, he still did, and he still prayed for them.  But now he was a man in the world away from Ninesisters and Grey Glen.  This was King's Landing and soon he'd be far away in the Disputed Lands.

Father, give me courage, Warrior give me strength, Crone, wisdom and foresight, Mother ... I have prayed to you many times.  Give me my heart's desire.

The Valeman stood up from his knees and sighed heavily before taking his leave of the sept.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Luecian LongBow Mon Dec 05, 2016 3:10 pm

On any given normal day, Luecian wasn't an overly faithful man. It wasn't everyday one left to fight a war on distant islands however and thus a bit of respect to the Seven seemed due. War tended to have that effect on men, even those who had spent their nights drinking, dicing and wandering the street of silk.

Father grant me yer sharp eyes as I lift me bow. Warrior grant strength to me arm and stillness to me touch as I draw me bow. Crone grant me wisdom as needed but not too much m'lady. Smith bless me bows that they be made well and stay in good condition. Mother be there for those who be needing ya during this business. Maiden keep the sight and stench of War far from the young and innocent. Stranger- I'd be appreciating it if ya keep yer distance from me a bit longer aye. No doubtin we'll be havin a grand time at some point but be preferring to put it off a bit...begging yer leave and all.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Kevan Lyras Tue Dec 06, 2016 10:39 am

Kevan did not often visit a sept. He believed in the Seven, yes. But he doubted that they had much influence on him and his loved ones. But him being married to a follower of the old gods only added to his bad reputation with the faith and so he made sure to visit a sept before leaving the city.
He had been loosely aware of the wrongdoings of his relatives, but never expected it to have any influence on him.
Maybe I have to speak with Arlyn. The big boned septon would know more of the matter...and it gives me an excuse to meet him
He chose a small sept where he could pray in private, but he made sure that he was being seen entering.
He lighted a candle in front of the Warrior praying for strength in the war and that his blade found its target and his shield protected him.
He lighted a candle for the Father for him to act just and one for the Crone for her wisdom to guide his path.
He also lighted one for the Mother so she would let his unborn child grow strong and protect his wife and his son until he returned.
Last he also lighted one for the Stranger. "You took one of us already" - his mind bringing up memories of Sam - "stay away from me and my loved ones for the time being. Will you?"

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

Post by Darron Greyjoy Tue Dec 06, 2016 6:09 pm

Hearing of how the Green landers are going about praying to their gods for guidance and protection Darron chooses to go to the port, their he takes in the dock workers bringing barrels and crates of many different good's. The Sea air was comforting as always. Afterawhile Darron picks up his equipment and heads towards a beach area to immerse himself in the sea water. While he is in the water a priest of the seven walks by, seeing the Ironborn shirtless in the water he asks Darron what he is doing. "Paying my respects to the drowned god, now if you coul..." "The Drowned god! You bloody heathen!" the priest interupts before launching into a slew of hate on Darron. "Here we fucking go." Darron thinks to himself as he finishes up before coming out of the water with the priest still shouting at him. Darron puts on his clothes again after drying off as the priest continues his hate filled speech. Theres a lapse, "Priest I swear by the drowned god and the seven if you say another word against me and my religion you will be seeing your gods very soon." The priest almost begins again but sees that the Ironborn is very serious about his threat. With that settled Darron leaves.

-1 Influence (Don't know what this is.) & 1 religious upheavl.

Not rolling awareness as Darron wouldn't be anywhere near that.

And i'm not going to be in KL for it to count towards G/B

His time in the Sept was constantly interrupted with blessings for him and requests for blessings from him. The faith's esteem made a quiet prayer impossible.

Ser Jon was a believer in the Seven. Maybe not as pious as a Septon but he believed none the less. The Seven worked in mysterious ways and it took faith, not necessarily to understand what they did, but to accept there was a higher purpose to their actions. People often told Jon that the Seven didn't hear their prayers. They hear, Jon thought, it's just their answer more often than not is 'no'. Like most Black supporters Jon visited the septs on Rhaenys' hill. Jon chose a smaller sept in an attempt of anonymity (not that anyone was really looking for him) so he could be left in peace during his prayers.

In front of the Warrior statue he knelt, Warrior grant me strength in the battles to come. Guide my hand so I may strike true against the foreign heathens and please protect my friends from the enemies' blades.
In front of the Smith statue he knelt, Smith please grant my armor and weapons your boon. My all my weapons be an unstoppable force and my armor an immovable object. Let your inspiration guide the hands of the weaponsmiths and armorsmiths of Westeros.

Lastly, Jon knelt before the Maiden statue, Maiden, I know you watch over young ladies; their virtue, their innocence, and their chastity. And I know you saw what I did to those women at the masquerade ball. Please, I ask for your forgiveness... while Jon knelt and had his head bowed in prayer he couldn't help but smile at the memories, But lets be honest, they enjoyed themselves and there is nothing wrong with a little fun.

With prayers complete Jon returned to his temporary residence. While his mind was absorbed in the memories of the masquerade ball Jon noticed little on the walk.

Prayers - Knowledge (Edu) - TN12: 5d6k4 20 Yup, I know what the Lyras heresy is.
Prayers - Awareness (TN15): 3d6 16 Shocked I almost didn't bother given how unlikely success was.  Wow.

Daveth walked with his wife to the godswood, accompanied by some of his bodyguard.  Now especially was not a safe time to be a political radical, which, he supposed, he was, given his close association with various Black symbols.  While keeping to quieter routes, they pass a relatively minor sept. As he walks past, he looks in, and sees Prince Daeron quietly in vigil.  A good man.  And what happens to him should the Blacks win?  Historically, those in his position would be killed by the new monarch consolidating their power.

I am working towards that young man's death.

Aly senses her husband's mood change, and squeezes his hand.  "What troubles you?"

Not used to being asked to share his thoughts, Daveth ponders how best to phrase it for a few steps.  "What duty demands, and justice dictates, has no guarantee of being purely moral.  I knew this.  I always knew this.  But still, it seems sometimes I allow myself the luxury of forgetting it."

"If duty were easy, there wouldn't be such value in holding to it." she smiles reassuringly at him.  "In a battle, by all means you may respect your enemy, but don't let that respect tarry your blade for even an instant, else it may well be your undoing.  Ultimately, all that matters is you're on one side, they're on the other.  Once the battle starts, you focus on survival, or you die."

"You talk as if the war's already started."

Alysanne spends a few moments assessing the movement and mood of the street before answering.  "Hasn't it?"

Not having an answer, Daveth simply continues walking in silence.  When they arrive at the godswood, and start praying, he can't shake the image of a young, pious prince kneeling in quiet vigil.

Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B] Empty Re: Phase 1.0: Prayers for the Campagin [All, KL to score G/B]

---

Ser Alfred's steps lead him to a smaller sept on what can be seen as the Black side by those willing to. He chooses one of the smaller septs, and for a reason. He doesn't really mind who is seeing him go where, but it is merely a matter of convenience. While the bigger houses offer the chance to disappear in the crowd, the smaller ones have a smaller number of nobles, and smallfolk mostly leave knights to their own devices. And there is also the fact that the smaller houses are also not crowded with those who want to be seen, a plus for someone who wants a bit of privacy with the Seven.

Passing by, a figure shortly catches his eye. Prince Daeron. He nods to himself. The knight doesn't pretend he can understand the lot of burdens, concerns, responsibilities and duties that weigh the Prince's shoulders. As a young knight, it was that level of might and influence he craved. But now ? Now he knows that a Lord's position doesn't take away threats and dangers. it simply replaces them with others, more dangerous and more threatening. All in all, he prefers his lot. Leave the courtly matters to the courtiers. Ser Alfred prefers the dangers he knows how to deal with. With the detemination in his mind. With the courage in his heart. With the steel in his hand. Yet, thinking about what must weigh down the Prince, the barely hidden conflict between blacks and greens, he can't help but wonder.

'What if the Old King were still alive ? What if he were in the position of his grandson ?' He remembers the Old King well. A good king, perhaps the best. A wise king.'He would have found a way. It would have looked outlandish, weird, perhaps even impossible. But it would have worked and looking back on it, it would have been the natural solution. A solution so obvious, everyone would have wondered why they didn't think of it sooner.' He trusts King Viserys, of course. But he knows that despite all the good the King has done, this conflict would not have emerged under his grandfathers rule. It's not his fault, but it's the way it is. As is the fact that the Old King has been dead for almost 25 years now. As are many others. Septon Barth, the best hand the realm has ever had. Ser Ryam Redwyne, a terrible hand, but the most formidable knight of his time. They left those behind who followed them over the threshold between life and history and walked on, passing from history into legend. And even those who only passed on to history... Prince Baelon the Brave, Ser Jon Cobb... The old Septon he met at the anniversary tournament for the Old King's fiftieth year on the throne. Ser Alfred can't even remember the man's face, but he man's words stayed with him. He silently mutters them to himself.

"There is no shame in failing to be a good and dutiful man. The only shame is in giving up trying to become that man."

It has been almost thirty years since that day. As he sometimes does, when he thinks about the days of old, Ser Alfred not only feels old. He feels alone. A man who has fallen behind those he had once accompanied. A straggler of fate. He notices he has entered the sept. The warm lights of some candles surrounds him. He can see the effigies of the Seven, skilledly crafted and beautiful in their simplicity. Their presence calms him. They have accompanied him as long as he can remember. He does not have to watch his words around them. He does not have to think about in what ways his words could be interpreted. The Seven are better than that. They understand what he means, no matter how he says it. They judge his deeds, not his words. They remind him that, no matter how useless he feels, he is still among the living and he understands that he still has a part to play in the grand scheme. Deep inside he knows that he should not assume an important role in the Seven's way of things, those are reserved for Lords and great heroes. He is no Lord. He is no hero, no champion of the Seven's cause. Still, he likes to think the Seven bear him no ill will for what he made of his past and present. Whenever he doubts himself, the Seven give him confidence. The Seven give him purpose. For that, he is thankful and for that, he will serve them for as long as he is able to.

He walks up to the room in between the effigies and kneels.
'Seven above, in your wisdom, you have led me to the place I find myself in now for reasons I cannot fathom. I see what was before me and what is with me now, but only you can know what lies ahead for both me and those around me. As I am about to embark on a journey to the place where I had my greatest triumphs as well as my greatest failures, I ask you for your favour. Father, I ask you to judge the intentions I and those I accompany have as clearly and impartially as is your nature. I ask you to bestow your blessing on us if you find our intentions just. Help us set right what has been allowed to go on wrong for too long a time. Help us restore order and peace for all those who serve you. Help us to enact justice on those who have wronged you and your servants in the past and present. Mother, I ask you to remind us to show compassion to those we follow you and remind us to be merciful to our foes where we can. Warrior, I ask you to give us the courage to face and slay the Savage, the Heathen and those who are declared enemies of the Seven. Help us not to falter in our task until we are killed or victorious. Maiden, I ask you to extend your protection to the frail and innocent. Help us to defend and shield those who are unable to do so themselves. Help us remember the difference between those we must kill and those we must not kill. Smith, I ask you to give us the strength to prevail in our task. lend us your determination, so we can do what must be done and see it through from end to end. Crone, I ask you to give us your wisdom to know what must and must not be done. Help us stay focused on our goal and let us not lose the way and let us not forget our purpose and mission. Stranger, as we go on, we cannot know what is awaiting us, as only you do. I will not pretend I am ready for whatever lies there waiting for us, but I know you will demand your share, no matter what happens. I will not pretend I am not afraid of the great beyond, I very much am. But if that is what it takes, so be it. Should I be destined to fall, I ask you for my end to be a swift and painless one and for the realm to be spared the cruelest trappings that may or may not be awaiting it in the time to come.'

Ser Alfred rises, slowly and carefully. His knees hurt somewhat, but this is nothing new to him. As he looks up to the effigies, they look exactly the way they did before. Naturally. Still, his spirits are lifted. He doesn't feel better prepared, but still, better. He sees a robed figure at the end of the room. He approaches and is able to make out more. It is actually a Septa that turns to speak to him. She is not very tall, but thin. Her face is marked by the lines and wrinkles that indicate she is older, but also from smallfolk stock. Her empty right sleeve is rolled up and pinned up at the shoulder of her clothes with a few simple needles.

"What service can the Seven render upon you, Ser ?" she asks calmly. Ser Alfred doesn't know why, but he hesitates shortly. Perhaps this simple Septa, who he assumes to be someone who has made her own experiences with war and conflict, is the wrong person to ask for what he is after ? Still, after a short while, he voices his request.

"Will you bestow the Seven's blessings on me and my sword so I will be able to better do their work, Septa ?"

The Septa looks at the knight thoroughly, it almost feels as if she's looking straight into him. None of the two moves or speaks a word, until the tension becomes almost unbearable. Finally, she gives a short nod, a barely noticable inclination of her head. "I will." He draws his sword. To his ears, the sound of the blade leaving the sheath seems so loud it could be reasonably assumed to have been heard on the street. It is old, worn and scratched, a far cry from the weapons many nobles carry. It seems almost like a sacrilege to bare it in this holy place, yet no one seems to have taken much notice. he extends the blade towards the septa, who places her hand partly on his hand and partly on the weapons hilt.

"The Father weighs the deeds of every man, woman and child before passing judgement. I charge you to do the same. Do so and this weapon shall help you put those to justice that deserve it. If you do not, it shall deliver you to the justice that awaits you for your deeds.

The Mother protects the young and innocent. I charge you to follow her example. Do so, and this weapon shall protect you infallibly. If you do not, you shall find neither mercy nor consolation among those around you.

The Warrior fights his enemies with courage and determination. I charge you to do as he does. I charge you to uphold his values. Do so, and this weapon shall inspire courage in your friends and fear in your foes. If you do not, your cowardliness shall make your enemies flock to you whenever they are near.

The Maiden protects the women and those who are innocent. I charge you to do so as well. Do so, and this weapon shall protect you from the insidiousness of those who oppose you. If you do not, you shall find neither rest nor protection from your enemies, no matter where you are."

The Smith grants strength and determination. I charge you to fight with all your might for the cause of the Seven. Do so, and you will find this weapon light like a feather in your hand. If you do not, all vigour shall leave your arms and leave the weapon like lead to you.

The Crone guides her followers with wisdom and insight. I charge you to think thoroughly before you act. Do so, and you shall walk around the pitfalls and treacheries your enemies prepare for you. If you do not, your wits shall leave you and your enemies shall become all the more ingenious.

The Stranger brings death to everyone. Choose wisely whom you kill and why. Do so, and this weapon shall bring the death it causes to your foes. If you do not, it shall turn against you and seal your downfall.

Remember the oaths you swore and the duties your rank gives you, Ser ! Whether you follow their teachings or ignore them for your own gain or due to other reasons... The Seven do not forget their own, for good or for bad. Adhere to their values and you shall prosper. Leave the Light of the Seven and you shall wander in the deep darkness beyond."

With that, she relinquished hand and sword and turned to leave him alone after one last piercing glance. Left to his own devices, the knight sheathed his sword and left the sept. But only after he had left a sign of his good will in the building. Two Silver Stags for each of the Seven, a symbol of his good will, but also to make sure the Seven were judging his past shortcomings in a more benevolent light.
