She held him tightly, her fears about Athelstan, what he might do, bubbling up, despite her efforts to be brave.

She pulled back a little and looked at Ben with anxious eyes;

I haven't told anyone, but... Yesterday... He gave me his eye, in a box, to intimidate me. It was horrible."

Recalling that memory upset her, and recounting it was worse. Her chin began to wobble a little as she fought the threat of frightened tears.

Don't let him make you cry. Keep yourself together.

When Corrine pulls back and speaks Bens eyes narrow, his nostrils flare, and his jaw clenches. At seeing her shaken state he passes the fury over for compassion. He places his hand under her chin to steady it and align her lips with his. He shares a brief kiss before whispering. "
As long as I breathe you will not have to fear him."

His kiss gives her strength, and she takes a deep breath to calm herself when he releases her.

Thank you. If the Gods are good, they will keep him away, until they can exact their justice."

She raises a hand to stroke his cheek.

I am lucky to have you. Just don't do anything reckless. I want you to stay alive and well. I only told you about what happened because I trust you."

His tone is jesting with a hint of seriousness.

She tried a small joking laugh, but the thought was frightening enough that it came out rather hollow, showing that she was actually worried about that possibility.

Corrine turned sharply at the sound of Athelstan's voice, unable to conceal her startled look, which gave way to defiance at his words.

Corrine turns fully to face Athelstan, arms folded, her stance square and firm, despite being smaller than him, and terrified behind her defiant mask.

You wanted to know who the archer was, and now you do. I'll thank you not to harass us. Lord Tullison is acting on a task accorded to him, and Frey's crime has witnesses. You defend a guilty man, as I regrettably did once."

I defend no guilty man for until he is tried I cannot call him so, but the way lord Tullison gathers evidence by paying witnesses when brought against Ser Benjen in his trial will be refuted as being manipulated and paid to speak against him, so condemning the man before he has a fair trail"

Lord Dunstan is young and yes does make assumptions some times. Had I been there I would have counseled him to take another route than he did. And yes evidence against the Frey is strong. I have already looked into it myself."

She stared at him a moment, then she softened slightly, sighing heavily. When she spoke again, the venom had left her tone, though it was a concerted effort to be calmer, and the undercurrent of fear showed in the slight tremble of her voice.

"
The rumours will fade, I am no longer concerned with them,"
she replied with a handwave of dismissal. "
What I am concerned about is you harming me or someone I care about, Athelstan. You are a man of strong emotions and impulses. I am sorry that you have felt maligned by what happened to you, including my rejection, but it is what has to be. Mine is a different path from yours, I told you that already. It is not really any of your business what I do now, but in the interests of settling things, I will tell you that I intend to marry Ser Benedict, but I have a concern that you will let your strong emotions foster jealousy, which you might act upon. Even if you cannot be happy for me, I ask that you at least accept that it is happening and not interfere."

She glanced between Athelstan and Ben anxiously.

Ben regards his words with suspicion. To give Athlestan time to think Corrine's word over he interjects. The over the top rumors seeming to make more sense now. "
My enemies seem to multiply daily, but I will always remain vigilant."
He watches Athlestan intently. "
You spoke earlier of Greenlander ways, watching for the enemies you can't see is one of the first or last things a highborn learns."
He looks to Corrine and smiles. "
And the fact that I am still alive and not on the wall should serve as evidence that I know this lesson. The true problem is how to fight them."

I'm ironborn we are men of action and we act not so much on impulse as you may think, but we are pretty straight forward. We are of different cultures and you will be shocked by things I do or say or how simple something are for me to shake of or not show my feelings, and at other how I may seem impulsive, like the offense lord Dunstan is probable unaware he has given me, but that won't stop his mouth from outrunning his brains, and now that I know he is a hypocrite with his I'm a devout man speech."

I feel sorry for Ser Benedict, I guess I dodged and arrow to the knee if this bitch is so overbearing, jealous, and fickle.
