[D9, Mid Morning] Embers of War
Embers of War
The tournament ends under a cloud, with Ser Benjen Frey's trail by combat yet to be resolved and Lord Tully's guests nursing cuts and bruises from the night before - or in a few cases, mourning fatalities. While the odd friendship has been formed and love blossoms in unlikely places, more enemies have been made than allies, and resentments born or exacerbated by the tourney shall play their part in the strife that seems certain to strike Westeros.
In the coming days, confirmation will arrive from House Arryn of Lady Corrine Marsten's marriage to Ser Benedict Blackthorne, but for now Lord Tully's guests seek to eke a final advantage from proceedings.
Participants:
One participant per house.
Characters of any age may participate, however, the difficulties of the challenges are increased by 3 for anyone of adult age or older.
Post your rolls and roleplay to this thread, one post per character please.
Challenge:
Awareness (7) – to uncover interesting topics. Each DoS = +1 bonus to final roll.
Athletics (7) or Cunning (7) – to catch the spy before they go to ground. Each DoS = +1 to final roll.
Persuasion (7) or Deception (7) – to extract useful information from the spy.
[Any speciality may apply to the rolls above, if justified in your role-play]
Remember to apply any existing fatigue/injury penalties.
Consequences:
Select one of the rewards below per DoS on the final roll – you may wish to note your goal in your personal forum rather than in public.
Information - Learn a useful piece of information about a rival PC house.
Misinformation – feed a false piece of information to a single house targeting yours with the Information option (Costs 2 DoS).
The grapevine - Learn a random useful piece of information about events beyond the PC houses.

Re: [D9, Mid Morning] Embers of Wars
Readying ironborn for departure is an extremely difficult task. Even when your claim to command is a combination of reasoning and the biggest, meanest and scariest fighters around, there is no guarantee that the ironborn will follow orders. Yoren felt as if he had done a reasonably good job of it, but it was still a rowdy gang, the spit and polish is not expected of ironborn fighters... This day, however Yoren is happy with their lack of order, as it makes a quiet boy that would otherwise go unnoticed stick out like a sore thumb. Not only does he stick out, he also has little means of escape through the tight crowd. Yoren, not wanting to scare the kid instead states: "
I have seen you around here before, and I am sure that your boss appreciate your work, but let me tell you: to your masters you are nothing but expedient. When you stop being useful, they'll not want you to run around telling people of your earlier proffesion... We both know what that means. They are ruthless and once they lose interest in you, you'll find no refugee in the civilised society."
Yoren smiles amiably to the boy, bending down to pat him on the back: "
However, as you can tell from these men, we are not civilised, we are all rakes. When your masters needs you no more, he can not reach you on Longshore land, as you've seen: foreigners stick out, and we don't like people sticking out. Listen to this, you've got yourself into trouble you'll be unable to handle. You tell me any information you have and I'll give you a second chance. I'll find you work and room, it's not much, but it's better than having your throat slit open..."

May I try to recruit this kid? He may be useful... If that is a possibility tell me, because then I'll use my last dp and my pious on the roll...

Re: [D9, Mid Morning] Embers of Wars
Scene to be written when I am not about to fall asleep.
: 6d6k4 18
Reroll of 1 was a 2;
no change. 2 DoS
: 3d6 10
Just made the difficulty for an Adult, no further bonus
: 6d6k4+2 18
Hotness reroll of the 1 was a 2...AGAIN...so I shall spend my DP to change a bonus dice to a test dice. This will bring my total to a 20.
The difficulty is 10, so I have 3 DoS. I select three 'grapevine' results, if I can do that.

Septon Arlyn woke up late that morning. Used to being an early riser he shakes himself of the grogginess brought on by the prior nights activities. He pokes his head out of the door to see if Lady Corrine was still there from the previous night but she had gone and there were only a few stragglers left behind
well she is a very busy Lady with a wedding to plan and all. I hope Ben made it back. That poor Ellie girl and lady Corrine love him very much. It's almost as if all their hearts are one. he then smiles to himself. heaven help any boy who come and tries to take the hand of that little spitfire though. She is quite a charmer herself.
Septon Arlyn brings himself back into his room. He pours fresh water into the tea kettle and begins to warm it. Whilst he does that he takes a small amount of lavender and begins to prepare it into some more tea. His stores having been used last night on ensuring that everyone received the proper care be could provide for their troubled minds. Just as he was finishing with his herbs and taking into account what he needed to gather on his journey back to the Sept on the hearth the tea kettle began to sing. The Septon quickly made himself some tea then poured some cold water into the bucket and mixed the rest of the hot water into the bucket, making it lukewarm. Grabbing a cloth and some soap Septon Arlyn set about removing the grime from his body with a small cloth. After a half hour of cleaning the Septon sat back and enjoyed his now lukewarm tea as well. Enjoying the comfort and finding his piece in the meditative thoughts on the seven. He was broke from his revery by the Septon Meriablad knocking on his chamber door.
"
Septon Arlyn? "
came the voice, "
Can you join your brother in some service?"
"
Why certainly,"
replied Septon Arlyn.
Both of the septon's set to work on the daunting task of cleaning the house of the seven. Tackling it with quite fever that came from years of obient practice, Septon Arlyn almost didn't even notice the note that was crumpled up next to the statue of the stranger. After a percurosy read through the Septon felt something was not quite fitting. Taking longer to study it the Septon realized that it was a note set for meeting some one in the kitchen. It also told the Septon that there would be a sign and that it would be what the recipient and the note writer had agreed upon. The time on the note was drawing near and the Septon knew he had to leave quickly in order to make it to the kitchen in time.
"
Your holiness Septon Meriablad I must take a short leave, I'm sorry if this inconveniences you buy I realized that I have yet to eat a substantial meal yet today and would like to take my leave to the kitchen. When I get back anything you need me to help accomplish I will help you complete.
"
Take your leave then, Septon Arlyn, I expect to see you back shortly.
"
I promise you this. "
States the Septon.
After Septon Arlyn made his way to the kitchen be convinced one of the cooks to help him get a plate and set him in a location where he could observe the place of the potential meeting. After waiting what felt like an age Septon Arlyn watched many people come and go from that location, but none gave a sign and none stood out. Eventually Septon Arlyn saw whom he was looking for. A slinder man in draub traveling clothes approached another man. A note exchanged hands and the v man whispered something in his ear. Druab clothes smiled and c walked behind a chair in the hall. well I do believe that is my man with that the Septon follows him until he feels that they are in a safe place.
"
So,"
the Septon broaches the man. "
Do you mind if we have a talk?"
"
I was wondering if you where ever going to approach me."
Says the man. "
what gave me away? Are you going to try and kill me? "
"
No,"
replies the Septon. "
But you must know that you play a dangerous game. I'm going to help you. And in return, your going to help me."
"
And his can I know that I can trust you?"
"
Trust is a funny word your I
Your line of work my friend."
The Septon replies. "
However reliable, reputable. This address things that can be tested, these things can be measured."
The Septon hands him the note that he found. "
Besides I'm a humble man of the Faith. If you can not trust me to keep a secret whom can you? Now tell me my boy, there seems to be something you need to confess."

Re: [D9, Mid Morning] Embers of Wars
Ellie
Ellie had easily spotted the dirtball on the previous day. He made many of the tell tale signs. Most of all his nervous grabbing of his crotch. Eeww. His was close in age, maybe younger. After she spotted him, she remembered having seen him numerous times and places. This one must not have got the message I put out on day 1.
Ellie had borrowed some of Pudgy's old clothes and disguised herself quite well. The clothes hung loose from her small frame and were well worn, like hand-offs. Her face was covered in grime an her hair pulled in a low pony tail. She patted Ben's dagger she had not bothered to return, tucked into her waist.
She followed "
Crotchy"
down a long alley. I need to get more creative with my nicknames. As the boy stopped to pet a stray she startled him by speaking. "
Yew like dawgs."
She couldn't help but laugh at both his shock and her poor smallfolk impersonation.
He made to run before remembering it was a deadend. Then he thought to charge past the figure.
"
Where are you going to run to? Isn't that your bed there."
She points to a musty old blanket. She had followed him to his "
home"
of sorts. "
I know where you sleep there is no sense running."
He simply stood, his hand busy pulling at himself. "
What do you want?"
Ellie shook her head still uncomfortable with his habit. "
For starters you can stop trying to start a fire on your crotch. Listen I am not going to rat you out or hurt you. I understand and respect what you do. It's exhilarating work and oft times rewarding. You my friend could use a lot of work or you may find an early demise."
Crotchy quickly puts his hands behind his back. Looking curiously at Ellie. He nods with a look of fear when she mentions his demise. "
I don't do it for fun. I do it t'stay fed."
She looks remorsefully at the scared half-starved boy. "
How bout this, I feed you a proper meal and we work out a deal. I can help teach you to stay alive and you ... well ... you know."
The boy looks mortified. "
I aint lettin ya bugger me."
His hands return to their busy work.
"
That's not what I meant."
There may be no help for this fool. "
Information is what I want! Lesson one: never assume anything. Get clarification. And stop touching yourself!"

Re: [D9, Mid Morning] Embers of Wars
[This RP is out of the venue of the event, but I didn't want to just do a repeat of 'Little Birds', it's character specific, and fits well into the spirit of the event.]
The young man woke to afternoon sun streaming in through the window. His mind was clouded and he struggled to get his bearings. "
I'm alive?"
he whispered.
"
Of course you're alive."
said Nathan, sitting in a nearby chair. "
Why wouldn't you be?"
"
You poisoned me."
"
Yes, that's true,"
smiled the boy. "
but not with anything serious. You did try to deceive me, but as there was no real harm on either side, I hope we are even. You were never in any real danger. Killing someone as handsome as you would be obscene."
"
How did you know?"
he replied, sitting up and giving his head a shake.
Nathan rose and offered the man a mug of hot tea. "
Drink this. It will clear your head."
He eyed the mug but took it. There was no real point in Nathan poisoning him twice. "
You did make a number of mistakes, but the worst mistake was not yours. You are young, athletic, attractive, intelligent and charming. Some of my clients are one or two of those things, but none are all five. Whoever chose you to entice information from me completely overplayed their hand."
"
I don't know who hired me."
"
I know Mikael. That is your real name, right? Don't look too surprised. You may have slept all morning but I haven't. Did you enjoy last night?"
"
Actually I-"
"
Prefer women? Yes, I gathered that. I hope I wasn't too disappointing."
Mikael allowed himself a small grin. "
No. Your reputation in that area is well deserved. So what happens now?"
"
Nothing. You're free to go."
Nathan sat down on the side of the bed. "
Since you were so talkative last night, its only fair I should give you enough information that the one who hired you does not think you failed;
and you might want to hint that you might be able to gain more, just to make sure they don't think you are no longer useful."
The young man wondered what he'd gotten himself into, just for a few silver. He could almost feel the boy's webs tightening around him. He should break free now while there was still time, but something held him there.
"
You know, you could come work for me. It would probably be safer, and more rewarding."
"
Rewarding how?"
Mikael cursed himself, the words had just popped out on their own.
Nathan leaned forward. "
Money, power, sex, security, knowledge. My job is to fulfill desires."
He leaned forward and kissed Mikael. "
What is it that you desire?"
Run! Run Now! his mind screamed. "
Why would you trust me?"
Nathan gave the man a wry smile. "
Who said anything about trusting you?"
He kissed him again and Mikael had the oddest feeling of melting.
Too late.

Daveth's actions, as he understood Ser Theomore's actions more and more, were verging more and more towards the paranoid. He'd added in multiple audits and checks, designed to defend against his pet spy's actions.
It was, perhaps, inevitable, that other spies would be caught in the same net. When this happened, Daveth simply played on his reputation of being the non-violent member of his family. A friendly smile and an easy way out was too tempting an offer with the alternatives available.
He even kept his word after the spy had told him everything they knew, and let him leave unharmed. He hadn't found anything useful before being uncovered, after all.
But if he had? What would you do then? What price Northern honour?
I suppose one day, I'll find out. But not today. Fortunately.
