Wool-gathering Empty Wool-gathering

Post by Daveth Coldbrook Mon Feb 15, 2016 1:05 am

Daveth had spent a long time carefully going over House Coldbrook's finances. He made detailed notes as to where they were, where he wanted them to be, and how best he could get from the former to the latter, over as short a period as possible. A powerful economy was the foundation of his plan to develop House Coldbrook into a true power.

What he could accomplish relatively easily would make their economy good. But he'd hit upon a plan that could make their economy truly great. No bards would sing of his exploits should he succeed, but it would be a major boon to his house if he could accomplish it.

He'd identified a large farmhold not far from their borders, with a respected woolworks associated with it. Investigation found it to be used rather inefficiently. Daveth *knew* that if he could persuade its lord to sell it to them at a reasonable price, he could turn it around, and make it as productive as it should be.

Of course, he didn't have the money now. But there was no reason he couldn't negotiate now, and actually do the transaction later. Given the sums involved, he doubted even the Dulvers kept enough cash on-hand to do what he wanted to do.

And that was why he was here. To speak with the Lord, and see if maybe, perhaps, he might be interested in a large infusion of hard currency in exchange for an old farm way out near the border of his land.

"
Lord Tully will see you now, Master Daveth."

Life has a strange sense of humour sometimes.

Daveth follows the servant to Lord Tully's audience hall, and kneels where appropriate. "
Lord Tully. Thank you for agreeing to meet with me. I am honoured."

Once the pleasantries were done, Daveth got down to business. He carefully and thoroughly laid out exactly why the sale he had in mind was best for both of them, though he never even hinted at House Tully's financial problems, instead suggesting that the money 'be invested in something with a better rate of return'. After all, being in debt is difficult. You can't just sell off property without making it look like you can't handle your own finances, which is deeply shameful. But when someone argues convincingly that it's really in your best interests to sell, since the farmhold was so distant, well, you'd be foolish to just ignore them.

And so, Daveth proceeded, respectfully, logically, and confidently, to first argue the case for the purchase, then, when Lord Gorman was nodding along, to argue down the price as best he could. It took a fair amount of effort for Daveth to hold out for a price they could both be satisfied with, but he did, with at least moderate success. And by the end, he could tell that there was at least a bit of respect in Lord Tully's eyes for him. For his capabilities, but also for his respect and deference towards the lord.

Now, all he had to do was actually collect the vast sum of money needed.

2: Gain +1B Dedication
2: +1 Disposition of Lord Gorman Tully towards me]

[Note that some DoS from the above may have to be redistributed, depending on how things go elsewhere.]

Daveth has spent time in Riverrun carefully diagnosing Ser Eoric. And then he double-checked his result, to be sure.

: 5d6k4+1 16

And now he sits across a table from the man, and doesn't really know the best way to begin. No dancing around the subject, I guess. Simple and straightforward, but not easy. Just how a warrior likes it, I presume.

"
I'm sorry, Ser Eoric. You have the consumptive cough. It is both fatal and incurable."
he pauses a moment to let that sink in. "
I can tell you how to manage the symptoms, to prevent you infecting those around you;
and I can tell you how best to manage your symptoms, so you can spend as much time as possible guiding Dermot to be the best man he can be. But I'm afraid that's the limit of my abilities."

When the knight appears able to focus again, Daveth goes over his list of activities for him to avoid, such as extended campaigns in the wet and cold, and activities that would likely extend his life, such as pastoral living in Dorne. He tries to phrase and tone it in such a way that he is giving impartial medical advice on what the effects of various actions will be, rather than coming across as trying to control the man's future;
although he did link any relevant actions to their effect on Dermot where he felt it was relevant.

In all, he was calm, patient, and sympathetic to the knight. No warrior wishes to die of a simple cough, yet the gods call how and when they will.
