Re: Aftermath D1 ME
Gordon can scarce get a word in after Jojen, though it's probably for the best. He may be disappointed when comparing motivations between them. The fair maiden responding directly to Gordon pulls his attention away from the trinkets, his disposition only getting sunnier, disinterestedly blocking out the words between the older gentlemen. "
If'n ya'll need a good eye at the inn, I'm yer man. Nobody'd even know I'm watchin'."
Probably cuz I'm better at th' other thing... "
Anyway, they can count me in. I'm gonna go meet that Coren fella an' tell 'im. Might be he has a clue fer us."
He briskly takes leave down the hall to where Coren said he would be if they decide to take the offer.
[I'm with Coren now, but I can wait for everyone else.]

Re: Aftermath D1 ME
[Assuming all goes to find Coren.]
The door leads to a quite cozy room. A few chairs are resting in front of a fireplace, which is currently not lit. In front of the fireplace Coren and Ammet is seated. Ammet is using a whetstone on a knife, while Coren is jury-rigging an old scythe, using leather strips and sticks. In between you and the fireplace, ten stools, boxes and other ramshackle objects which may serve as chairs have been put in a circle.
The gargantuan cook is seated in the corner furthest away from the door, but she is the first one to see you enter. Without aknowledging you she clears her throat long enough to wake a bear from its hibernation, which startles Ammet so badly that he looses his knife and his whetstone both.
Coren motions for you all to take a seat in the circle of stools, before he himself rises from his chair at the fireplace to take seat upon a small barrel, which his buttocks sags out from on both sides. Ammet hurriedly picks up his knife and whetstone and puts them on the mantlepiece before he seats himself next to his grandfather. Coren looks around before he asks: "
What questions do you have? I'm afraid we don't know too much, but we might know sonething you can use."
As Coren finishes the cook exits through the same door you entered through.

Daeryssa smiles at Gordon when he says he'll join.
She carefully seats herself on one of the stools. "
Has there been anyone causing trouble for you or your son before the fight? Anyone who might hold a grudge? I'm concerned that whoever tried to start trouble won't just give up with that one fight."

Re: Aftermath D1 ME
"
No, Ammet has been left alone before."
Coren looks over at the hulking boy: "
But he usually keeps to 'imself, doing the se'en knows what out in the forest."
Shrugging he looks back at Daeryssa telling her: "
'is father an' 'is uncles 'ave had some problems, and more than what they usually get into."
He explains to the girl: "
Neighbours oft'n borrow stuff out 'ere, and that's fine for the most part, but sometimes my sons get's too heated over it and starts shoutin', and they start fightin'... But the locals knows the rules for fighting, you never draw a blade, 'nd you ne'er 'it someone while down. The new people"
-He mentions them with venom in his voice- "
don't follow the rules. An' there's been some quite bad fights, although ne'er as public as this last one..."
After this long talk Coren starts coughing, a rattling sound. He walks over to the fireplace to spit out huge globs of phlegm, and while he is away Ammet takes over: "
We are worried that some nobleman might get to know about the fight, and that they will start killing again, and we do not want that."
Pointing at Brant he starts telling "
I liked the last one of you around these parts, but..."
Then Coren starts talking again, as if nobody has been talking: "
Sorry about that, it sometimes comes when I've talked too much... Ammet, unless you want someone to close it for you, you'd better shut your gob."
-Ammet swiftly closes his mouth and shrinks back in his chair. Coren simply continues: "
My sons have had to start carrying weapons, because these new people are so dirty... My sons can watch themselves, but Ammet doesn't have 'alf the wit that's needed to 'efend 'imselves."
He finishes with what seems like genuine concern for his grandson. But Ammet tries to make himself as small as a man of his statue can get.
"
That witch that's settled in old goodman Edgarths 'ut would be a good place to start, but be careful around that one, she's almost as sly as she is ruthless."
As he starts talking louder about the "
Witch"
His hacking cough slowly starts building up again.

We should choose who goes to her carefully then. Someone with quick wit, and persuasive. Should take some muscle just in case though."

Re: Aftermath D1 ME
Gordon winces at the sound of their guest's noisy coughing and hocking up fluids. When Coren mentions the rules about fighting, he nods grimly in confirmation. He's heard it before from Ma and Da, who mostly keep to themselves. When Devyn speaks up about putting someone on the task of speaking to the witch, he swallows a bit. "
Uhm...well, I dunno anybody [h]'alf as sharp as Patience,"
he answers, glancing sidelong at Patience, daring not to mention her way with people, and her needling gaze. "
She's got muscle, too."
"
Ya got any names of those new folks, Coren? Ammet?"

Re: Aftermath D1 ME
Something about this seemed a little off to Brant;
maybe it was the dismissal of Ammet by Coren, but they seemed convinced that there was no reason to target them. It was his experience that there is always a reason for something and the trick was to find what that reason really was, through all the pretense. He would speak to Ammet afterwards on the pretense of checking his wound to find out what he meant.
"
The people at Market Town may know something as well. That would be a good place to check."
Of course, he thought, they may know something about you as well. he looked at Coren as he spoke trying to get a good read on the man.

"
I don't usually sneak around who my sons have issues with, but I know they 'ave 'ad problems with Carsen. That man's a blacksmith, so you oughta be careful aroun' 'im..."
After a short pause Coren continues: "
an' there was this man called Orwen too, me sons talk'd about 'im always watching the back of a lad called Connas too... There's pro'ly a lot more, but I don't really know, you'll 'ave to make the witch tell you."
He shakes his head.
"
The Markettown people will know a lot, the 'even only knows how many longfingered rogues they 'ave millin' about. Many 'f 'em are 'fraid to be involved, but me an' me son's are ne'er scart... If they want to take us on in a fight, we'd send 'em all runnin', regardless 'f how many they may be."

Brant's aware nature wrote:Ammet seems to be a little uncomfortable when Coren talks about his sons, probably Ammet's uncles and father. When Coren talks of his lacking wit, he seems to grow a bit angry, but that is shortly masked again by his worried looks. When the witch is mentioned his eyes starts darting, and he swallows a few times. Coren seems to relish talking about fighting the newcomers, while Ammet just continues to grow more and more worried- looking.
Physically Coren seems to be really ill, and you dislike the way he sometimes struggle to breathe, and his pallor seems very unhealthy to you. In the globs he spat on the fireplace there also seemed to be a bit of either red wine or blood, and both speaks poorly to the state of his health.

Re: Aftermath D1 ME
Daeryssa listens to Coren, worried. The last thing they needed was another fight, and it seemed that Coren and his sons weren't backing down at all.
A noble certainly would intervene if fighting started... maintain the peace was part of their purpose.
"
If you're not well, perhaps Maester Brant or myself could see if we could help? I know some about healing."
Daeryssa offered. She also gave a sympathetic look to Ammet. Her father would never talk to her that way.
"
Father, perhaps we could speak with her?"
Daeryssa wanted to be with the group who met the witch, as she had never met a real witch. Based on their interactions, Patience hadn't exactly come across as the most diplomatic sort, but maybe she knew the area better.
"
It seems we have some good places to start... I'm sure we can take care of the problem"
Daeryssa said cheerfully. Partially that was her upbeat nature talking, but it was also an attempt to reassure Coren so he would feel safe and wouldn't do anything rash. It sounded almost like his sons were spoiling for a fight, and there clearly wasn't any trust between them and the new arrivals.

Re: Aftermath D1 ME
Gordon nods as Coren speaks. "
Carsen the blacksmith, Orwen n' Connas, an' Market Town..."
"
If'n some o' ya wanna go ta Market Town, I c'n go wit' somebody to find Orwen or Connas t' see wot they're about, then maybe th' blacksmith. Ya know where they're at, old man?"
He avoids suggesting tailing, or snooping around the blacksmith's house, for certainty of offending the Blackwood knight. Best to show rather than tell with that one, show that nimble fingers and moving unseen are sometimes necessary talents. The young man's thoughts are all over the place. Visit Market Town an' tail Orwen 're Connas or break into Carsen's home, then perform an' keep watch at th' alehouse. There's so much I could do... Dunno if'n the maester c'n be of much use...
[Judging from Brant's Awareness results, I'll bet Ammet's already met the witch. Maybe ask Ammet if he knows what she likes and dislikes.]
[Devin and Daeryssa aren't likely open to going anywhere without each other, but Patience has her cadre. We could send Patience with said cadre to the witch(group 1), while Devin, Daeryssa and Brant go to Market Town to use Streetwise(group 2), and I go with Griff and Jory to visit Orwen/Connas and then Carsen the blacksmith('s house, group 3). And then later, assuming I have spare time, I can keep a watchful eye at the alehouse where the attacks happened, using Mummer as a front for my presence there. I think this is the best assignment of tasks based on our skill sets and temperament, and making sure none of us are alone in case we run into any hostility.]

I was ill for a while, but when I ask'd the old maester about it he started givin' me a brew weekly, and as long as I took a spoon each morning and each evening, I was fine."
Coren tells Daenryssa: "
After he got killed I couldn't get my vials, and without it just continues getting worse. E'en though Ammet might walk with his purse in his back pocket he still managed to keep the farm runnin', but now that he's hurt too, I have no idea on how to make it work."
To Gordon he says: "
Carsen is prolly busy stealing work from the proper blacksmiths in the town, Orwen will be where there's trouble, and Connas'll be with Orwen."
[I'll make a few threads to the different people, then you can walk wherever you please.]

His lymph nodes are swollen, and it is obviously something wrong with him, but you can't for the life of you, or for that matter his, figure out what is wrong. You don't know what remedy the old maester used to keep him well, and you can't understand what has caused his illness.

I shall have to examine any notes from my predecessor to see what he was giving you. Do you have any remnants of the remedy you were given?"

Coren shakes his head as another coughing fit takes him. Ammet supplies: "
He drank it all, and the vials were given back to the castle."
Looking worriedly at his grandpa he adds: "
I think you should leave, he grows worse when he has to talk a lot."
He then rises to lead the guests out.
