Skirmish at Briar Creek
Family Ties
Ben knew when word arrived asking for his assistance, form Lord Blackwood, that it had something to do with “the Bridge”. The tiny hamlet had no official name, as it only consisted of several homes, a mill and the bridge that crossed the sometimes swollen creek.
Ben had spent most of his time with house Blackwood in that tiny place. He had trained the few smallfolk to fight. He knew the area well and the people.
Hoping to not drag House Marsten into any problems that may arise he decided to travel by himself. Of course that did not sit well with Lady Marsten and other concerned individuals. He took with him two volunteers from the garrison.
The Bridge
As Ben approached the bridge two Blackwood men barred his path. Ben smiled at the familiar faces.
“Well! I’ll be a son of a whore. Look George it’s Ser Ben.” The bushy bearded man-at-arms gives him a red sour leaf smile.
“Ell. He ain’t no Ser no more he’s a Lord now, Martin. Best be grovelin’ low.” George mock bowed to the saddled Ben.
“Got married eh? Was wonderin’, way you wouldn’t take ‘em girls in town. The farmer’s daughter woulda rolled in the hay for a ride on yer horse. And the miller’s wife ‘ell she practically threw herself at ya. I’m relieved boy- milord.” Martin bows with more seriousness.
“I see you baffoons have not changed. How many times must I say it? How well do you think that farmer and miller would fight for me and watch my back, when I put their women on their backs?” Ben smiled at the two.
Call the Cavalry
Blackwood intel was correct. The scouts were moving across the shallow part of the creek west of the Bridge. Ben sat with George and Martin in the tall reeds. They watched them cross in the dark of night. Half asleep they watched them return before dawn.
The plan was easy. Lord Blackwood had sent Ben cavalry. Catching them in the open would insure victory.
They wait till the men move over into Blackwood land. Then they quickly dam the creek, below the shallows. Ben sends the cavalry into the nearby treeline to wait. By early morning the river had swollen significantly.
As the scouts ride up to their blocked escape, it is obvious they have been caught. The signal goes out and the cavalry storms forth from the trees to meet the rapidly forming ranks of their enemy…

Longsword 7d6k5. Damage 5 per DoS
Ben sees right through the axeman's feeble attempt at distraction, leaving him ample time to circumvent his shield between his leg and Clayton's strike. The crowbill clanged off with a stiff jolt to Ben's arm. The block though gave Mason a fine opening. His mace landing solidly on Ben's thigh. His armor absorbed the brunt of the blow, but there would surely be a mark.
Recognizing the danger that the crowbill presents, Ben brings Strax to bare on him. His sword crosses over and down onto the man with force. Finishing Clayton Ben tries to jostle Mason out of the picture long enough to deal with Hank, but fails to maneuver the man around.

Longsword 7d6k5. Damage 5 per DoS
Despite his efforts his shield is not placed well and Mason's blow lands squarely on his chest. The hard blow is diffused out across his plate, but it is still painful.
In a howl of pain Ben shoves his longsword up into Mason's chest, the man's own momentum helping drive the sword home. Rolling side ways and kicking up Ben attempts to stand but his tangled blade and new armor prevent him from doing so. Instead he rest on his knees watching the battle swirl around him.

Re: Skirmish at Briar Creek
Ben kneels on the trampled ground, his weight leaning on his shield. The four trespassing men-at-arms lay scattered. Over his shoulder the dark coated courser Strax whinnies in warning. His right hand flexes around the leather wrapped hilt of his blade. His eyes scan the maelstrom swirling about him.
A rider approaches, his coat not any of Lord Blackwood's men. A field of yellow strawberries surrounded by 7 green leafs on top of a blue chevon with a maroon base. The man was unknown to Ben, but surely with scouts.

A rider approaches, his coat not any of Lord Blackwood's men. A field of yellow strawberries surrounded by 7 green leafs on top of a blue chevon with a maroon base. The man was unknown to Ben, but surely with scouts.

Re: Skirmish at Briar Creek
"
I see you you have killed my men, whom where trying to keep the peace, Ser"
he says the last word with some distaste, "
So, tell me why I should not skewer you where you are, Ser"
he sounds eager to be on with his day, but is willing to give a fellow knight some courtesy if he can be convinced.

"
You could try to skewer me where I stand, but then those of your men and mine nearby will know that you rode down the Lord of Hartshorn, without offering him a honorable chance. I would assume you to be a more chivalrous man, if not pious."
The last bit contrasting the reason for the long running Bracken/Blackwood feud. "
What say you to meeting on equal footing and mayhap we put an end to this blood shed, Ser ...?"
Ben's voice carries no malice or haughtiness. He makes no move so as to not give the man a reason to think his words a lie or trap.

Re: Skirmish at Briar Creek
"
Very well then,"
the knight makes no sudden moves, clearly thinking about his options. "
How about this Ser, you have yourself a mighty fine suit of armor. Let us joust for it. Should you win, you get to go free, however should I unseat you from your horse you must ransom back that pretty armor of yours. This way we do not expand this blood feud and you are not a lifeless corpse for some mother to cry over."
The knight is not cruel in his words, more mercenary and calculating. He knows that he has the upper hand but it's willing to level the playing field for the chance at a bit of profit. For corpses do not lead to ransoms

Re: Skirmish at Briar Creek
Ben's lips curl in a frown beneath his helm. Not knowing the knight he was unsure of the man's skill on horse or with a lance. He was however confident in his own sword arm though. Pursing his lips and nodding inwardly he attempts to find a medium.
"
As you again have me at an advantage, I have no lance, how about we clash with blades. On horse or afoot your choice. And perhaps even out the spoils. If you win I ransom or ride home in just my small clothes, if I should best you, you will ransom or ... walk home. Fair and honorable?"

Re: Skirmish at Briar Creek
The knight thinks to himself for a moment. "
That sounds fair enough,"
with that he swings from the saddle and lands on his feet next to the horse. bringing his sword from its sheath he takes a fighting stance, his right leg set behind the right and his left foot pointing towards Ben, his shield is placed out in front of his body, the stawberry angled to sweep and blade away from his body, with a florish the knight brings the blade back and rests it on his shoulder, his arm preparing for where he thinks ben will try to attack

lesser action, dismount
lesser action, aim (+1 B to next test)
(OOC you go first so you get you standup action + a lesser if you pass your agility test.)

Longsword 7d6k5. Damage 5 per DoS
Ben rises from his precarious kneeling position, rolling his shoulders backwards. His eyes on the Strawberry knight. His shield remains low his sword dangles by his right hip. He appraises the knight's stance and distance as he dismounts and readies. His mind counting out the steps and spotting the weakness in his stance.
Greater action: stand
Results: On feet
Round 2
"
Born into Darkness to let the Heavens reign!"
Ben launches at the Strawberry knight his boots kicking up fresh earth. His sword swirls up over his shield and left shoulder. It continues to circle his head with a glimmer of shining steel. A breath before he reaches the knight the blade comes flashing down with raw power.
The knights attempt to raise his shield only results in the shield being driven down. The blade sinks deep into the steel pauldron, slicing the soft padding and flesh beneath.

"
oof"
the knight lets out a grunt as the blade strikes true."

remarks the strawberry knight as Ben moves back from his strike. He launches into a furry of blows, knowing that the only way to get past his heavy armor is to sacrifice his own defense

Ben leans back as the knight throws all he has into his attack. The fierce blow glances Ben's breastplate, but solidly rings on his cuisse protecting his thigh. The blow stings badly.
Using his returning momentum he jars into his opponent driving him forcefully to the ground. A quick snap of his arm brings his sword over his head and hurtling into the downed foe. The knights shield clatters from his hand allowing the weapon to find the weakened pauldron and access the mans already wounded shoulder.

Re: Skirmish at Briar Creek
Ben stood over the downed knight and scanned the battlefield. Bodies littered the upturned earth. The majority of the scouts had fled routed by the superior forces. The sun was cresting the treeline, its morning light turning the swelled creek blood red. Ben removes his helm and looks sadly down at the unknown knight.
When will these two Houses cease this needless blood shed or at least stop drawing others into their feud.
***
The Strawberry knight awakens on a straw mattress in a tiny hut. A sun beaten old woman with a bulbous nose sits rocking nearby. When she sees him stir she hops from her chair with a surprising spryness. She scurries toward the door.
"
Fetch m'lord! The fellas rousing!"
Poking her bed in the door she smile a toothless grin at the knight. "
Just sit tight. The h'ill be here in a moment."
***
Within moments Ben ducks through the entrance to the tent, a sympathetic look. "
Your belongings are in the corner. Mel bandage your wound. It appears it will mend well. You are free to leave when you feel you are able."
Ben sits on the edge of the old women's chair, his weight causing it to creak. "
I would not have you walk out of here, so if you are willing to sign this debit mark for the horses ransom you may take him."
(ooc: Sticking with the agreed upon Ransom consequence. BTW I had calculated the knights original CD using the -4 AP for full plate in the house rules.)
