[D5, LA] Remembering the Dead - The Warrior's Seat
Remembering the Dead
Many and more have fallen in Battle Valley over recent months;
it has been a cruel Spring. With yet more to bury after yesterday’s atrocity, House Blackwood and House Bracken both hold ceremonies for the dead.
Tensions run high, and the right word – or the wrong one – can do much to soothe or enflame the mood.
Lord Haig Bracken leads a traditional affair in the Andal style, all chanted prayer, sweet smelling censers and prims of light to lead the dead to safety. That, and to conceal the smells. House Bracken has lost much, and Lord Bracken casts aside his usual boisterous manner to act with great solemnity, taking care to involve his son Ser Wyll, for when the young man must lead. It is only natural to think of the succession at such a time, with man directly confronted with his own mortality.
Ser Myles Blackwood delicately guides Lord Benjicot Blackwood through a yet more ancient ceremony as the Old God worshippers of House Blackwood bid farewell to their dead. The young Lord retains his composure throughout, despite the weeping of the bereaved and the loss of his own family in vile circumstances so recently. A brave child, forced to grow up too fast from the smiling child who rushed around Hartshorn as Lord Benedict Marsten’s squire.
Stage 1
- Knowledge (education) TN 9 – Each DoS = 1B on stage 2 rolls (can be spent after making the stage 2 rolls) – knowledge of appropriate phrases, rites and parallels
Stage 2 – Please note in your roll whether you’re attending the Bracken or Blackwood funeral rites
- Language/Status (breeding/reputation) TN 12 +1 for having at least rank 1 in High Valyrian as the flourish impresses the audience – to deliver the right words correctly from mastery of tongues or the right upbringing and force of rank
- Persuasion/Deception (any) TN 12 – to deliver your message forcefull
Consequences
- Critical failure on any roll = dramatic consequences as insult is given, with a potential challenge issued or influence lost
- Pass all stage 2 rolls = +1 glory
- Highest score across the stage two rolls at each venue: +1 additional glory and may choose to inflame tensions on the Blackwood/Bracken side (influencing the House you attended). Please sum your stage 2 rolls if you wish to be considered.

Re: [D5, LA] Remembering the Dead - The Warrior's Seat
Nathan looks out over the gathered mourners.
"
After the tragedy of last night. After the many tragedies that have befallen Battle Valley. It is natural to ask oneself: 'Where are the Gods?' 'Why do they allow such a tragedy to happen?' 'Why do they not prevent such tragedies from happening?"
"
The simple answer, is they could, but that would take from us the one gift they have given that sets us apart from every other living creature. The gift of choice. Remove that gift, and you remove what makes us human. They knew what would happen, and allowed it to happen because right up to the moment it happened there was still a choice to turn away. That is why they permit evil to happen, because every potential evil act is also an opportunity to turn away."
"
However, no-one here should confuse permission with approval. The Father did not stop these tragedies, but he rails in anger and will lay judgment on those who deserve it. The Mother did not stop these tragedies, but she weeps for the victims and consoles the survivors."
"
Pray for the souls of those who died to tragedy. Pray for those who survived and suffer for the choices some have made. Pray for those who where given the gift of choice and the opportunity to turn away, but did not."

Kevan raises his glass before speaking. "
You can't survive life, as they say and we all know about our mortality. But that knowledge does not relieve us from the pain of losing someone we care for. Let us have drink for the loved ones that passed away, but still live on in our memories!"

Re: [D5, LA] Remembering the Dead - The Warrior's Seat
Ereth stand and begins to speak to all those there with great bearing
"
Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours."
Hoping that peace can come between the Old and New Gods, and looking at everyone's eyes
"
Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Cherish every moment like it could be your last. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people."
A small pause, a moment of silence for those that passed away.
"
Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over. Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, or even a stranger, if in a lonely place.
Show respect to all people, but grovel to none."
"
When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the gods, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself."
A bit of chastisement to bring a tear and remorse for all the blood shed.
"
Touch not the poisonous firewater that makes wise ones turn to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way."
Now we must remember them for what they did and who they were.
"
As long as we live, they too will live;
for they are now a part of us, as we remember them."
"
When we are weary and in need of strength, remember them."
"
When we are lost and sick at heart, remember them."
"
When we have joys we yearn to share, remember them."
"
When we have decisions that are difficult to make, remember them."
"
When we have achievements that are based on theirs, remember them."
Looking back at everyone's eyes once more.
"
As long as we live, they too shall live, for they are a part of us, as we remember them."
"
For as long as you all live, they are now part of your history, and mark or a stain in your soul!"

"
Lord Drakeson, a man of your position must have some words to share? You have numerous supporters in the audience eager to hear from the Dragon's son."
Afterwards, Baelon could not recall who it was that had whispered in his ear and urged him to speak... or even whether or not it was real or delusion brought on by the milk of the poppy that Maester Leopold had given him that morning. Stepping forward, he struggled through a haze of poppy to find words... and fell somewhat short.
"
Many have died, who should not have. May the Father judge them well, and the Mother show mercy to those that deserve it. May the Crone guide us forward, and the Stranger... well, the Stranger has done his work, to be sure."
Stepping back, Baelon drifted through the clouds. Perhaps the Maester had forgotten that not all were so inured to the effects of the poppy as he himself was.
Stage 1
: 2d6 7 -2 injury = 5 vs TN 9 (Fail, but not critical)
Stage 2 – Please note in your roll whether you’re attending the Bracken funeral rites

: 6d6+2 25 1d6 5 1d6 3 -2 injury = 23 vs TN 12 (3 DoS)
Consequences
Nothing....
EDIT: I forgot about my injuries from the Ser Hugh fight. If I had remembered I would not have rolled in the first place, and definitely would not have wasted my Lucky reroll.
With milk of the poppy I'm just barely not getting critical failures...

Re: [D5, LA] Remembering the Dead - The Warrior's Seat
Yoren seems reluctant to speak at such a foreign commemoration service, however, being lord holds its drawbacks.
I'll just deliver a few punchlines before sitting down... He thinks to himself I'll make it neutral of religion, a few powerful lines to make people remember my appearance here and I'm done. Nothing wrong with that.
"
Death is the final thing that absolves us from all duty, As our death evolves us, we can finaly rest. To all that mourns today: Me, and others here has resolved to find the culprits. This involves you, help us help you, we will dissolve all that tears at you heart."
As he walks of the scene he reflects That could have done better, but it could also have done worse, let's hope that the people here can find peace. I hope that the rest of the speakers won't bore us to death...

Ben made his first formal appearance at Warrior's Seat. His recent actions making his status stand out enough to be paid attention to. His words find some hold with those present.
"
My Blackwood heritage is always made prevalent at times like this, but tracing far enough into that tree you will see the Bracken blood that has been married into House Blackwood in the name of peace over the many long years of fighting. The same for house Bracken. So though we may each be mourning the losses seperately, every loss of life is a blow to both lineages.
Each loss keeping both houses from rising up higher to show Westeros that the blood of the first men is still strong in the Riverlands."

Re: [D5, LA] Remembering the Dead - The Warrior's Seat
Gwyneth couldn't help but smile at Baelon's showing...but to her credit, she managed to make it look more like a benevolent and proud smile rather than the rather immature little snigger it really was. She put a hand on his arm as he took his seat again, and let a few other people go as she took stock of the room and mood. For something like this, rehearsing felt wrong. Overly practiced words would seem insincere. And it was a little touchy...she'd have to acknowledge the loss, and the anger, and the desire for justice...while still emphasizing moving past those things.
She stood up and looked over the people gathered, a nonverbal announcement that she was going to speak she'd learned long past from watching the septons carefully as they sermonized. So many clever touches they used to guide an audience...telling them when to nod, when to whisper, when to be silent. Gwyn hadn't paid much attention to the sermons themselves, but she'd learned quite a bit despite their best efforts. Just different lessons than they'd prefer.
"
When someone we care about is gone, it leaves a hole in our lives,"
she says...and for all her self-aware skill at manipulation, the emotion there was real. She knew that hole very well. "
We may sometimes think we hear them, and call out. Or catch a glimpse of them out of the corner of our eyes, sitting in their favorite spot. Or spy a stranger who looks just a little like them, and for a shocked moment...imagine they are there. Our natures abhor that vacuum."
"
Too many of us have those holes in us today. Too many people taken from this world. From us. And what we want...what we all want...is for it not to happen anymore."
"
There is such a thing as justice, and it will be met, but neither it nor its dark twin vengeance can fill the holes in. What comfort we can take is here, in each other. In those of us who live. We can heal one another, in time. We gather here in remembrance of the dead, but also...and to my view even more importantly...in support of the living. The trials of the dead are past now. They are beyond pain. It is you, and I, and everyone left, who must press on."
She looked from one side, to the other and urged, "
Look to your neighbors. Your servants. Your masters. To the children. High and low, we are brothers today in that pain. Help others, and accept help. Remember the dead, but live...for the living."
With that, Gwyn raises her goblet. "
To the living."

Re: [D5, LA] Remembering the Dead - The Warrior's Seat
Calm words gently spoken by Lady Gwyneth Drakeson and Lord Bartheld's aide Nathaniel do much to soothe tensions and honour the dead.
The darling of Riverrun's court has not just the joy for tourney and dances but the gravitas for more sombre occassions. Perhaps there is more of her aunt Isobel in her than she'd care to admit, and mayhap this is no ill thing.
Ereth's speech catches much attention, while Lord Drakeson's stumbles are assumed to be emotion from the young Lord, given the friendly audience. Bastards are known to be passionate creatures and he is known to be close to their host.
Lord and Lady Marsten wisely split their attendance, and Benedict shows signs of growing in to his role with well chosen, simple words delivered sincerely. Ser Kevan's nobility elevates proceedings, moving Ser Jon Roxton to call him a "
perfect, gentle knight, the mirror image of the Ferocious Frey"
, a bold remark in Lord Frey's hearing, but one which the Lord of the crossing acknowledges with a slow, sad nod.
[OOC:
Gentle reminder to add in roleplay please.
highest score goes to Gwyneth Drakeson, +2 glory total.
Other awards:
Kevan Lyras +1 glory
Ereth Redwain +1 glory
Yoren longshore +1 glory
Tymon Lannister +1 glory
Benedict Marsten +1 glory
Nathaniel Mason +2 glory (highest score with attaached roleplay at event resolution: roleplay counts and incentives drive behaviour!)
