*Whoops, I've been worrying too much.*

Goal: Friendship
Intrigue Initiative: Baelon 16, Loreia 7
Disposition: Amiable
Loreia wrote:Loreia smiles warmly and lifts her cup in a gesture for a toast. "
And I wouldn't wish to bring needless grief on mine. Cheers."
As she does, she notices something she hadn't before, a genuine quality to Baelon's tone, a neat crease to his grin, a serene gaze in his eyes. Instead, Loreia seizes her cup before it can reach the peak of the gesture and throws back another quaff of ale. Daveth, Garret, Dunstan, and this Baelon, I swear I'm surrounded by a pack of small lordlings.

"
I'm happy it doesn't trouble you, but I am a little surprised. Have you met anyone from my house, maybe at last year's tourney, or are you just that fast at making friends?"

Action: Consider

Loyalty is bred in the heart and the bone. I am sure the Tullys are very aware of your fervent loyalty. Even so, the mind can be prone to doubt, especially with time and distance. It is never a bad idea to remind good friends just how good a friend you are. I am sure you and Ser Benedict will bring much honor to the Tullisons and the Tullys, no matter how well you do in the Tourney.

I do admire that you are entering the melee. I do not consider myself a coward, but I admit that entering such a dangerous event with so many skilled warriors is something I would not relish. You are a braver man than I.

A drink to both of you!"
smiles Nathan as he raises his cup. "
I wish you both luck in your challenges. You are probably both skilled enough not to need luck, but no matter how skilled you are, a little luck never hurts."

"
I thank you friend. Your kind words mean a lot to me. Let us drink!"
Dunstan says and raises his cup.

"
Are you here on your own or are you in service to any noble House?"
he proceeds to ask, hoping the young man does not serve the Coldbrooks - for he liked him and did not want to tarnish his friendship with newly formed hostilities from this evening. {Dunstan's disposition to Nathaniel goes to Amiable, he said the right words:)}

If I have met any of House Coldbrook before today, it was only in passing. I make friends fast, but that doesn't mean I don't stand by them in their hour of need."

He sighs.
"
To be honest, I would love to get to the truth of this matter, and bring peace to your two houses. However, as an outsider I'm afraid any efforts I make toward that end would only cause anger and accusations of partisanship, which would only deepen the animosity, not resolve it. If both houses were to agree to consider me a neutral mediator or arbiter, I would gladly serve as such, but I doubt your lord would agree to that. Certainly not if I were the one trying to convince him."

[Thanks Smile Let's see if we can get Nathan to Amiable]

"
I am here with some colleagues of mine."
replied Nathan "
We are from House Bartheld lands in the Reach. We do perform services for that Noble House, as we do for others, but it would not be accurate to say we are in service to them. We are... entertainers."

Nathan was not normally reticent about his profession, but the young Lord seemed to be wonderfully naive, and naivete was a rare and precious thing. Nathan had no desire to spoil it, or offend Dunstan. He gave a long look to Ser Benedict. The Knight was a man of the world and obviously had vast amount more experience than his young cousin. He certainly understood the subtext. Nathan would not hide what he did, if it came to that. He was not the least bit ashamed of his work, but perhaps the older man might lead the way more easily than Nathan given his knowledge of his Lord.

Dunstan blushes and looks to the ground, allowing himself a small shy smirk.

"
House Bartheld is famous for entertainment my Maester says! It must be an exciting life you lead. Lordly duties don't allow me to leave home and travel too much so I've never visited the Reach. Let's hope our two Houses develop a lasting friendship on this tourney here, so we have the reason to see each other again!"
Dunstan musters the courage to speak openly again.

Lordly duties and the entire overprotective court Dunstan thinks to himself.

"
Yes, I must admit that my life can be exciting,"
grins Nathan. Which can be both good and bad. "

He takes a sip of his cider and sighs. "
It's just a shame that being friends with someone can often make you an enemy with someone else. If you truly wish friendship with House Bartheld then you will eventually need to support one of the two contenders for Head of the House."

There's a significant difference between risk taking and sticking one's nose in a hornet's nest. Imagine if sometime earlier today I had approached you and offered to be such a neutral third party. Then imagine that you learned I was friends with House Tullison. Would you trust me to be neutral? I doubt it."

He takes a drink of ale. It has gotten a bit warm.

"
No, if I am to have any part in resolving this, he will need to be convinced by members of his household."

He gestures with his free hand towards Loreia, indicating that she is one of the members he is referring to.

Composure Loss
Consequences: +1 Disposition toward Baelon, Baelon gets +1D Persuasion/Deception tests next intrigue
New disposition: Friendly

"
I guess that's true,"
she admits. "
At least this way, I know you'e tellin' it like it is. As for Lord Coldbrook, we'll know tomorrow if he feels the same way about you."

Loreia flags Becca to pay her tab, then decides to quit her outing at the tavern, if there is nothing else demanding her attention.

*Loreia will attempt an intrigue with Lord Tomas on Day 2. Let me know if this is officially part of the consequences as well.*

"
Talk to Daveth first. Get allies. Numbers matter in a battle of words as much as they matter do in battle of steel. I shall speak with Dunstan and get him to agree as well."

He puts his hand on her shoulder, comfortingly.
She is so tall! And damn, I've known seasoned knights with less muscular shoulders.

"
Stay firm in your convictions, and we can get this matter resolved - hopefully without more bloodshed. We already have one blood feud in the Riverlands, we don't need another."

I did not imagine anything like this when I woke up this morning. Hell, not half an hour ago I was planning to keep myself out of this mess. My mouth does get me into trouble sometimes... not usually like this, though. Well, on the bright side if I pull this off I'll be able to get both houses to support House Marsten against the clans, and be able to add something new and different to my list of accomplishments.

OOC: No, it's not. The only consequences are the disposition increase and I get +1D on persuasion/deception checks against you in our next intrigue. The rest is entirely up to you.

I was unaware there is a rift in leadership at House Bartheld. It is truly an unfortunate matter to have members of the same household turn on each other. Of course I understand if you do not wish to comment but I still have to ask - what is the nature of that conflict?"

Dunstan was curious to learn as much as he could about other Houses and he went about it as he has the tendency to do - direct questions without much subtly.

Nathan ponders the question for a moment. "
Well, by traditional succession, Davain Bartheld is the Lord of the House. That's if you believe in traditional succession. There seems to be much discussion on that point of late all accross the Seven Kingdoms."
says Nathan with a wry smile. "
The former Lord Brom also wished that his Grandson succeed him. I understand that they are very close. Davain is a hard working and disciplined young lord, full of a sense of responsibility to his family and his smallfolk. He is also a serious and prudent young man, a quality that is not necessarily appreciated by some others in his House. When Davain took over, he scaled back many of the lavish parties that the Barthelds are known for. He also made many enemies when he decided Hunts for sport were unnecessary, wasteful and inefficient, training in weapons was serious business when lives were at stake, not the purview of duels or wagers, and his Household being constantly drunk and lascivious caused far too many problems to be tolerated. All reasonable views, if you ask me.

His Lordship is being contested by his uncle, Ser Fendrel Bartheld. He leads a faction that is unhappy with the new-found Bartheld prudency. Many like to be constantly drunk and lascivious, especially when someone else is paying. In fairness to Ser Fendrel, the renowned Bartheld hospitality does much to curry the favour of many nobles throughout the realm, and he fears that restraining such hospitality will diminish House Bartheld's power. Perhaps he is right, but in my experience, true friendship is based more on trust and dependability than free wine and women."

[Despite relaying the facts openly and honestly, it seems clear that Nathan favours Davain over Fendrel]

Having an uncle challenging his position must be terrible. I must thank the Seven more often for surrounding me with only the finest councilors and family members in Westeros. Lord Brom is a friend of mine! I love hearing stories from him, about his past and all!"
Dunstan reacts worried at first, but soon cheerfull again upon hearing the name of the old Lord, a guest in Mountain's Reach for some time now.

"
Anyways, I thank you for clearing the situation for me. It is good to have friends in every household and i trust we will remain in touch after tonight!"
the young Lord hoped to have Nathaniel keep delivering him the news of how the succession crisis is resolving in the future.

Baelon looks across the room at the Tullison lord.

I've talked big with Loreia, but can I really follow through? I'm sure I can convince Dunstan to let me act as a neutral third party... but will the Coldbrooks agree? And even if they do, will either side really accept what I say? I'll have to make it so that they cannot refuse...

He sees Ser Jorah approach Dunstan.

That's the knight that helped me hold up the Queen's carriage. What was his name again? "
Jareth"
No, "
Jorah"
? Maybe. I think I saw him with Loreia earlier. If he's a Coldbrook this could go sour very quickly, and if it does it could make an even bigger mess out of this. I'd better make sure that doesn't happen.

He walks over to join the two men.

EDIT: It was brought to my attention that Baelon and Ser Jorah had encountered one another earlier that day, though they did not speak. Updated!
