[LA EE] service to the slums Day 7
Septon Arlyn went to the destitute section of river run, seeking to evangelize and provide sustenance to the poor folk whom where too ill or simple to learn a trade. He spoke with them in an easy manner, encouraging them and trying to help them see the light of the seven. His hope was to convince them to find ways to help themselves and become "
worthy"
of assistance in the eyes of the mighty lords. He tried to show how the small folk were worthy of the sevens love and was attempting to charm them with stories of the maiden and the mother.

Re: [LA EE] service to the slums
As the Septon Finishes his alms giving and attending to the smallfolk, providing them with some spiritual guidance he comes upon a gathering of men and boys, gathered around in a circle around something, laughing, cat calling and generally being a raucous bunch of men, like hounds surrounding a wounded deer, daring one another to go in and attack.
"
What is going on here?"
, Septon Arlyn bellows, standing up straighter and allowing the strength of his office to lend weight to his words.
"
It's nothing,"
wheezes a reedy wisp of a man, "
just some old joes having a bit o' fun is all."
Septon Arlyn grew suspicious immediately. He had met his sort before in his travels and knew him to be the most dangerous type of man. He sensed the greed oozing off of him like a slick oil, the yellowing of his eyes matching the callowness of his heart. A man too weak to be strong in his own right but would lead others to be his arms, oft leading to him not actually taking part of his nefarious plots. Tred carefully here Thought the Septon, You are not a hero, You have an important mission here, and you do not want to end up floating down the river. "
I'm sure that many people would agree with you good man, However all of this noise has me concerned that something ISIS happening, and I want to make sure that we are all safe here. Remember that the Father sees all. Now if you folks could be kind enough to part the way so that I can see what is go..."

"
No?"
questions the Septon, eyebrows cocking at the virulence of the smallfolks rage. "
Who are you to order a man of the faith around?"
"
You have no say here, poor priest! I know how much your precious Lord Dulver gives to you, your little better then a common man, more peasant then holy man!"
The rage that fuels the man shows as a glisten of sweat forms around his head, face reddening beneath the yellow hue, The foul stench of his breath making the Septon very aware of the alcohol that he had consumed recently. "
My name is Lem Farsworth, fat man, and you had best remember that, I do not take no orders from false priests with honeyed words."
Septon Arlyn thought quickly, This man was clearly dunk and very disorderly. He was afraid that if left to his own devices, whatever was at the center of that circle would meet a grisly fate. He looked around at the crowd trying to gauge their reactions and was disheartened by the fire he saw in their eyes. This could end badly Thinks the Septon. "
Good people,"
The Septon announces to the crowd, "
I understand your plight, I have walked amoung the smallfolk as a begging brother, I have birthed your children, presided over your marraiges and helped wash your dead before putting them into the ground. I have seen the Mothers mercy in your houses as well as the Fathers justice. I have stood vigil with your elders as the stranger came to meet them. "
You can not have him! He is a green supporter, He laughed at me and called me names! Him with his big bulbous head, and he thinks that he can just mock supporters of the princess? I'll show him!"
His yellow eyes had a red hue in them, showing madness, anger, fear and rage"

As the Septons quarterstaff takes Lem in the gut with a solid Thunk, Arlyn sees the light leave Le's eyes as he crumples to the ground.
Seeing the leader of the little group get crumpled cools the gathered throng. As the Septon watches he sees people dissipate into the surrounding area, not wanting to test their mettle and feeling childish and remorseful over watching a man attacking a man of the cloth and not trying to assist. The remaining scattered individuals left the small figure crumpled in the street. The Septon recognized the dwarf as the fool known as mushroom, whom the queen had brought along. Knowing of the rumors of the dwarfs simplicity due to his misshapen head the Septon approached slowly and spoke in a low quiet tone to the dwarf, asking if he was ok. When the dwarf responded in the affirmative The Septon asked if he could walk and if he would like an escort back to the pavilions, When the dwarf responded in the affirmative on both accounts the Septon went over to Lem, Scooped him up, and brought him back with the dwarf, knowing that the queen would have some questions for this rabble rouser.

"
Hey you! You're with the Coldbrooks, aren't ya?"
An man reaches for Loreia and grabs her unawares by her arm. She wrenches herself free with a shove, staggering him.
"
Don't you grab me, man! What do you want?"
"
If he keeps goin', he's gonna kill 'im!"
he rasps. "
You're with the Blacks right? He'll listen to you!"
he says, waving her over to an alley.
Picking up the parts left unsaid or unexplained, she follows. "
And if he doesn't?"
"
Then 'keep the peace', yeah? Do what you must."
The muffled yelling of a familiar voice perks her ear, matched by beastly cries vaguely threatening, beckon her as she hurries her along at a quickened pace. The sounds of a scrap fade in as they reach the squalor of poor living, and then come upon a crowd of people just beginning to disperse. The wretch who brought her to the scene curses under his breath. "
Gods above, we're too late..."
Catching sight of a familiar figure, she moves against the throng to see a portly man in rustled vestments, slightly torn, bending over an feeble man lying in a manner one wouldn't on their own, trying to move him. The man who led her gasped in surprise and scurried over to get a look.
"
Seven hells. You're twice his height and twice the fool he is, Lem."
Taking in the scene, Loreia decides it prudent to speak with septon she recognized as Arlyn from the day prior. "
Are you all right, septon?"
she asks with agape concern. "
What happened here?"

The Septon Looks into the faces of the crowd and sees Loriena, look of concern on her face. "
I'm fine, just a few bruises is all that happened to me, This man though"
, He states gesturing to lem who is spralled out on the gound. "
Is going to be lucky if all he ends up with is a headache."
Septon Arlyn then quickly describes the scene that he came across, with Mushroom being beaten up by the gathered crowd, The Septons Attempts to stop the violence followed by the attack of Lem. "
He stated that the dwarf mocked him because he is a supporter of the princess and that was his complaint."
Septon Arlyn gives a heavy sigh after he got done catching his breath. "
I did not even know that tensions had risen so high. Maybe this is not indicitive of the current state of affiars though eh?"
says the Septon, given a forced smile. "
Who are we to condemn an entire ideological mindset off the actions of a single person?"

"
Who indeed,"
she agrees softly. "
The only damnable thing of note is that one's callow tantrum. It's their privilege, though. For all the good nobles do bickerin' politely over who should sit the throne next, it's only for appearances' sake - Daveth once told me that. Lady Alianna once told him that,"
she chuckles. "
If wealth an' resources weren't an issue, they'd just as soon set their men to task."
Her face had revealed shock partway through her meager input on the situation, thinking to ask a question about this irregularity straightaway. "
You don't mean to say you fought him off single-handedly?"

The Septon gives a pained smile, "
Yes gaurdswomen, I wish I could have reasoned with him but he was beyond that by the time I had arrived."
Then the Septon gave a frown, "
This is not an common occurrence mind you, however when I was a begging brother there where times that the robbers did not respect the brown robes of poverty and tried to take the only thing that I had left, besides my devotion to the God's that is."

Not a common occurrence indeed. "
But you still fight?"
she asks. "
That is, it's a useful skill to pick up on the road. I just wouldn't have expected the Seven's devoted to be allowed to fight back, let alone be able. I haven't known many, only a begging brother who'd visit Castle Grenward on his yearly pilgrimage to the Wall, and he'd often travel there with one or two Crows."

"
There are some brothers I have HAD an objection to fighting."
Replies the Septon. "
But if you wander the roads of westeros alone trouble trends to find you. That's why the Brown brother you know of walked with the men of the knights watch. Less trouble is to be had if you travel with armed gaurds. But there is nothing in the seven pointed star that states that a clergyman can not fight off his assailants. In fact there is an aspect to our faith that cellabrates the strength of arms, although I personally feel like it's better to resolve things diplomatically if I can but in some cases..."

The Septon laughs"
but you yourself seem to buck tradition here. Same people who would say that a priest can not know how to fight would be the same who said a women could not complete with a man, yet here we are, a fat Septon and a gaurdswomen of coldbrook talking over a downed man whom thought he had a right to rule over others simply because he felt he had the right and the strength to."

OOC: Between this and including Loreia into the same unorthodox position as himself, is the septon glossing over anything? Possibly trying to direct the conversation to avoid a specific line of inquiry, or away from lingering on the Faith and anything regarding strength of arms? I wonder...

I s'pose you'll be all right by yourself. I don't think anyone'll come after you, if your handiwork is anything to judge you by,"
she commends, praising the septon for his sound thrashing of Lem.

Septon Arlyn's jovial smile returned. thank you for not pushing this issue m'lady and be replies "
that would be most helpful. You know some of the individuals in the south seem to think that you northerners are little more then the savages that the wildings are, but they are sorely mistaken it seems, David, Ser Jorah, and yourself have all been very helpful. And Jorahs page speaks very highly of him. Your lot may be a little gruff around the edges, with your large statures and menacing looks and harsh words "
winter is coming "
, but you have all been very honorable, more honorable then quite a few southerns I do believe"
he relays that last part in a slightly hushed tone.
Ooc: set dispositions to amiable for those three mentioned

OOC: I like to use bold type with asterisks for short OOC responses. Instead of forcing more posts, you can edit, and then I'll add a quote from you and my response to it in addition to my response to your "
thank you"
below.
"
Winter is coming. Harsh, but fair,"
she answers austerely, with a playful grin. "
House Coldbrook's words are 'Never Falter'. Good words for any willful man to live by. The words of House Mormont are 'Here I Stand' - speaks for itself. You want menacing, look no further than the sigil of House Bolton. Or to the Greyjoys for something closer to home, with 'We Do Not Sow,'"
she adds with a sour frown. Closer to the south, or closer to her?
"
As for the people you mentioned,"
she continues while carrying Lem over her shoulder, "
Daveth's a bookish type who grew up in the Neck, and Jorah's mother was Dornish - he grew up in these lands, too. Me, I used to live further north than either of them."
This appears to be a welcome distraction for her, as she hasn't responded directly to the notion that she might personally meet Princess Rhaenyra.
thank you"
below.

Re: [LA EE] service to the slums Day 7
As they continued to walk Septon Arlyn continues to talk, making sure that he is not going to fast for little mushroom to keep up.
"
Those are some fine words, you seem to be very schooled in the mottos and sigils of the various northern houses. Have you had any formal training in them?"
Septon Arlyn keeps an eye out for any further signs of trouble, but is grateful that the guardswomen is with him, knowing that few would dare interfere with a Giant of a women hauling a man over her shoulders like a sack of potato's.

"
I wouldn't say formal, septon,"
she answers plainly. Daveth taught me a little about the mighty southron houses, and a few northern ones. Before that, I once called Bear Island my home. Our people have lived there long enough to know basic things about those who see it as a ripe target - between learnin' anything of use for defense."
"
When you were a brown brother, did you visit the North?"

The Septon shook his head. "
No gaurdswomen I did not travel very far into the north. The furthest up I went was to moat calin to see the lizard lions that stalk those waters. Have you ever seen a lizard lion? Terrifying creatures, yet strangely beautiful in there own way. Almost like the stranger made flesh, the way they look like logs, floating in the water, until snap"
the Septon makes a clapping sound with his arms swinging wildly. "
They grab a creature and drag it down into it's watery afterlife. Quite impressive. But one thing I have always wanted to do was see the wall. In fact I had planned on traveling there until the position for my post was opened up unexpectedly"

Loreia shakes her head "
no"
when asked, and leans back in surprise at Arlyn's wild, snapping jaws demonstration.
"
Oh? What happened to the one who held the position before you?"

Re: [LA EE] service to the slums Day 7
The Septons usually Jovial continence saddens slightly. "
I was bringing messages to Lord Halrad of House Dulver around six years ago. Being a begging brother sometimes Lords who do not have access to ravens will dispatch Brown Brothers with messages, trust in our abilities to be truthful about our deliveries, in return the begging brothers get to stay in the castle with the lords and eat at their tables, its a good arrangement,"
states Septon Arlyn, nodding. "
But on this trip when I came to visit Septon Quayle he was feeling ill. I believe that the stranger was coming for him that week now but at the time I extended my stay simply to see that he would have someone to watch over him. "
"
You see Septon Quayle was a strange old bird, he often had mannerisms that would lead people to feel uneasy around him, like staring just those moments too long, or clucking the inside of his cheek rapidly at random intervals, however whatever you say about the man he did love those smallfolk whom where under his care. This is the thing that we had bonded over the few times I had met him in the past. So even though the other Septons in the area where loathe to visit the small sept on the hearth, I had become good friends with him"
"
So on the last day that I was to be there Septon Quayle was walking me out of the Sept, as we stood at the door and I was about to receive his blessing Septon Quayle suddenly collapsed and lost control of on half of his body, as well as his ability to speak. Now the learned maesters call these symptoms a "
stroke"
but at that time I had little time to study the healing arts as I was wandering the roads as a brown brother. Knowing I could not abandon the ancient little man I stood vigil over him. I thought for sure that the stranger had come for Septon Quayle and had forgotten half of his soul. His body began to deteriorate rapidly and it took me the majority of my day just to make sure that he was getting adequate broth, hoping against hope that he would recover. What time was not spent caring for Septon Quayle I spent praying to the gods for his return or safe passage from this world to the next."
The Septon gave a long pause in his story, reflecting back to that time. "
In time he passed."
Stated the Septon. "
With no one else to take over the responsibilities for the Sept on the hearth I took over the post, as none of the other Septons wished to take over the responsibilities for such a small and quaint Sept."
Giving a smile at Loriena he states, "
That's how I came to become the Septon of house Dulver. I believe that the Gods have put me in this position for a purpose, so that I can help those who can not help them selves. Just as that is why I think they have put me through the crucible that they have, to shape me into a tool that they utilize in the best way possible. That is why I believe so strongly in this orphanage that I feel I must build. The Gods have shown me a need, and with their help I will complete this task they assigned to me.
The story took quite a while to tell, and the Septon, realizing that he had been hogging all the spotlight, in turn asked Loriena. "
So what drove you into becoming a guardswomen?

Re: [LA EE] service to the slums Day 7
Loreia's attention had been fading in and out, until he got to talking about the poor man's death. The old septon croaked, got it. She does pay attention from that point on.
Mayhaps the old man was too old to work towards that need,"
she speculates. "
The living must often fill the roles of the dead when they pass on."
No less true since Joren's death.
Well, I've always been a fightin' woman. On Bear Island, the men go out and do men's work, leavin' their families behind. The women have to fight, see, 'cause it's just them an' the children when the raiders come.
"
One winter, we got hit hard,"
she begins. The cold leftover breeze of the snap thaw of a possible spring, discussed by the maesters a few days earlier, accented her reminiscence of her warrior past. "
Raids every other week by some small Iron Islander houses goin' the Old Way. Ravens were sent askin' for support. By the time help arrived, my family was all gone - it was just me an' my mum when the raiders came, winter took the others.
"
I left with one of the elite troops and came to Castle Grenward, where I helped with their horses an' hounds. Around a couple years later, I started sparrin' with Garret, Lord Coldbrook's son. I was - and am - honored to serve my house, but I wanted to fight. So, I requested to be promoted, or 'recruited' I s'pose, an' sparred with our guard captain to test my ability. Now, I look after Garret an' Daveth, and I sometimes take orders from Jorah before captain Kieran."
She nods. "Septon Arlyn wrote:"

"
That is quite a story"
Says the Septon in Awe, "
You have lived quiet an interesting life. So what are you plans after the tournament? Will you be returning to castle Coldbrook?"

She pauses between steps. "
I hope so, septon. House Coldbrook'll be lendin' some soldiers to House Longshore for an expedition, and I'll be leavin' with them, in a week or a fortnight. We'll be sailin' north of the Wall."

Yoren Longshore wants to catch some animals to breed."
She shakes her head with disapproval.
"
The beasts are like to be made of tougher stuff up north, but I don't much care for it. Wildings an' bitter cold's not worth it, but Yoren's no fool. He's put some thought into this, and we'll have numbers on our side. We stand a chance of returnin', whether we fight our way through the wildlings, or try his...preferred method of dealin' with them."

How does one deal with savages? I hear stories that they are little more then feral animals who wish to devor human flesh."
The Septon shudders at the thought. "
Thank the seven I have never met one. They sound grisly and terrifying"
