Scene 1: Back home in Hartsbridge
It was good to be back home. After a rather uneventful journey from Riverrun to the Marsten lands, he enjoyed returning to this familiar place, even though he knew full well, that a lot of work was waiting for him. But hard work requires proper equipment, so let’s start with that

His wife – an expression he still had to get used to - was staying at Hartshorn with the Marsten household, while he was visiting the town. Strolling through the streets of Hartsbridge towards Gorton Hare, the local blacksmith, he observed the locals, some haggling or arguing others quietly going about their work. Not quite a city, but still more than just a hamlet.

“Good morning Gorton, how are you?” he greeted the old blacksmith “I am back from the Tournament and dare I say it, your work held up excellent.” He touched his left shoulder and continued “Saved my life a couple of times during the joust as well as the melee!”
“Ah Ser Kevan, it is always nice if someone appreciates my work, especially a knight like yourself. I am fine thank you Ser. Some problems with the Mayor, but other than that I am happy. I heard you did well in Riverrun! How can I help you?”
“The brigandine armor protected me well, but now I have the funds to upgrade to a fullplate armor. I also want to purchase a new sword, the old one seemed not that well balanced between blade and hilt.”
“Ah, a knight in need of equipment, my favorite type o’ knight”
“For a regular customer like me, I am sure you will make me a good price?”

: 4d6 10, Success vs TN9
The blacksmith smiles, “You are a good advertiser for my work, so I am sure I can give you a small discount. But this is quality work and I won’t sell it for cheap”
The two haggle for a couple of minutes, both in good spirit and finally agree on a price.

Mechanics
Buying full plate and extraordinary longsword,
Regular price: Full-Plate: 3000
Superior longsword: 500*5 = 2500
Total: 5500
Bargain: 6%
Effective price: 5170

[OOC: Apologies for the slow start, will hopefully become a bit more interesting wtih the next few scenes :;

A journey through the Vale Empty Re: A journey through the Vale

Post by Kevan Lyras Wed Aug 12, 2015 11:00 am

Scene 2: Trouble on the road
Kevan was travelling by himself. Sitting on his trusted black Rounsey he followed the narrow path winding along the Marsten river downstreams. He was clad in his new full plate armor. He was not expecting much trouble but between the fact that he was riding on his own and the frequency of clansmen attacks happening, he decided it was worth the sore muscles.

He was reminiscing over the last weeks, he had spent with Sofia. After a short stop in Hartshorn they had travelled to Sunray Keep, where they visited his brother, Lord Aaron Lyras. Kevan enjoyed seeing his relatives again but he was especially happy to see Sofia blossoming between the large Lyras family with all his nieces and nephews. Later they moved to the small manor in a reclusive valley of Lyras’ lands that his brother had offered him to maintain. The time at their manor really allowed Kevan to get to know his wife. The days were spent running their estate, meetings with the local reeve and looking after their smallfolks. The nights the newly-wed couple had spent otherwise…

: 3d6 10
He had passed the border of House Marsten‘s lands only a couple of minutes ago, when he heard noises coming from a small clearance up the path.
Another attack? I better check this out…
He drew his sword and cautiously rode towards the source of these noises…

The scene unfolding infront of him was bizarre: A group of five men, all of them armed, some protected by splint armour were chasing a boy of about 12, who was dodging between his attackers and trying to keep them away with the two blades in his hands.
"
You got nowhere to run, you lil' fucker!"
growled one of the attackers, bleeding from a light cut in his face, probably caused by one of the boy's blades.
"
There ain't no hidin' from our master, you should know that"
added another one from the opposite side.
The boy ignored their remarks focused on evading their weapons.

Kevan rode closer and with a booming voice he addressed the men: "
Stop! What's going on here?"

The one armed with a longbow saw him first: "
None of your concern! Just keep riding and we don't have a problem here..."

"
I am afraid that is not an option. Why are you trying to kill a boy of what.. twelve years old?"

The other thugs turned their attention to him as well, trying to keep the boy from escaping at the same time. Realising Kevan was but a single rider, they became cocky.
"
Well, if you are so intent, you can share his destiny.."
the one with the bow answered with an evil grin...

The guard with the longbow took a shot, thinking it would be easy for them to deal with one lone knight. His shot was true, but the arrow bounced off Ser kevan's armour.

Ser Kevan ignores the fighter in front of him, being more concerned with the safety of the boy. He rushes over and attacks the distracted guard from above thanks to his mount. The thug uses the opportunity to attack him once more as he passes by, although his weapon has no chance to hit the armored knight.

Kevan hits his opponent with a vicious cut on the left shoulder.

ooc you only get +2 if your horse doesn't move and it has. Doesn't matter as you've done more damage than their health and and I presume these qualify as minions.

Ser Kevan's strike was true, bringing his sword down on the man with a halberd, splitting his neck open.

Round 2

The longbowman, having been taking aim at Ser Kevan, fires again and his shot is true, striking Ser Kevan in a gap in his armour, through the mail, into his side. He then moved behind the surviving halberdier for protection.

Ooc - that's the one who just charged up dead. This means actions from now on go Thug, halberdier, Longbow, boy, Kevan

The other thug steps back carefully, nursing his wrist.

Dammit, we ain't here for you, just this brat. Leave us be."
He swings his mace at the boy, striking him in the leg, making him limp a little.

ooc
lesser action - withdraw
Lesser action - attack boy with mace
: 3d6k3 7 - that's 1 DOS for 4 damage, so 1 damage after armour. That's a tough 12 year old.

The halberdier maintains his stance, waiting for Ser Kevan.
The longbowman aims his bow again, unleashing another dangerous shot from his bow, but with Ser Kevan's maneuvering, it was a glancing shot.

Ooc
Maintain counterattack
Longbowman : 5d6k4 21 2 DOS, so 10 damage, with 1 piercing, so 1 health.

Now the boy to go

The remaining halberdier attempted to pull Ser Kevan from his horse, but his halberd got caught on the saddle and Ser Kevan's armour instead.

As the thug turns around and runs, the boy focuses on the remaining guard. He runs up to him and feints a charge before stopping abruptely in front of him, causing the halberdier to shift his weight to his left foot. As if they were working together for many years, Ser Kevan waits for this opening to bury his sword into the guard's uncovered right.

As the remaining foe goes to the ground, the knight dismounts, checking that none of the men are a threat anymore, before cleaning his sword and stepping over to the boy. As he approaches, the boy bows and remarks "
Thank you for help good Ser, I was just about taking care of them myself, but your help made it alot easier"

Despite what just happened, the remark transforms Ser Kevan's face into a grim.
What a cocky boy!
"
Hah, yes sure, that is what it looks like. What's your name, boy?"

"
I am Benjen, but my friend's call me Knuckles. And by what name goes my saviour?"

"
I am Ser Kevan Lyras, serving House Marsten. Would you tell me, why there are five bandits chasing a young boy in the middle of nowhere?”

As Kevan introduces himself, the boy’s expression darkens slightly and he unconsciously takes a small step back.”You are from Hartsbridge? Well, then you probably just killed a bunch of your liege lady’s vassals…!” he hesitates for a moment. “…see, these were henchmen working for Mayor Seldon…”

Luke Seldon! Lady Corrine told me about him… the story seems odd, I am sure the boy is not totally innocent, but five men chasing him..?
“And why is the Mayor interested in chasing a little boy?”
“I am not that little! And they chased me, because, because I… the Mayor is not a good man and I don’t want to be near him anymore…”
Sensing, that there is more to the story, Kevan replied: “Tell me about it, what was he doing? If you were coming to Hartshorn to talk to Lady Corrine Marsten, I am sure we can help you out..”
“Oh no, I am not coming back near Hartsbridge…” The boy took another step back “The Mayor has a lot of men there and I plan to live for a few more years without a noose around my pretty neck…”
“Calm down Benjen, I am not going to force you. But how are you going to survive? Tell you what, I am travelling through the Vale right now, leaving Marsten lands anyway. At the very least accompany me on my travel?”
The boy seems hesitant for a few moments before slowly nodding his head. “Ok, I will, but don’t try to trick me, I am not going back!”

Scene 3: Travelling

It was late afternoon, the incident on the road near the river had happened two days ago. Ser Kevan was walking on foot, leading his horse on a rein. Benjen was on the other side, carefully tending to the cuts on the horse's legs.
"
Horse is recovering well!"
Travel through the last two days had been uneventful. The boy was happy to have a personal protector on the roads, but he was not willing to talk about his dealings with the Mayor and Kevan made sure not to press him to much.
The boy didn't seem to concerned about the dead bandits, but the rounsy's wounds had him visibly affected. As he learned that the steed had no name, he simply to began calling him "
Horse"
, tending to his wounds throughout the journey.

The trio arrived at the top of another hill and the small town of Oxcross came into view. The town was of similar size as Hartsbridge and situated on the same river. Originally founded around the local ford, where the ox carts could cross the river, the town grew into a small commercial hub around a busy ferry directly under the control of House Arryn.

"
I promised not to force you to anything and now, we arrived at Oxcross... "

"
And you kept your promise Kevan, thank you. This city seems like a good start for my new life."
He patted horse on the back and turned around to Kevan to wave at him, as if he feared the knight would grab him, came he too close. "
Goodbye Ser Knight, take care!"

He turned around and started walking towards the town.
"
Benjen, wait!"
, Kevan pulled a small letter purse out of his garb and threw it to the boy. "
You take care as well!"

Benjen snatched the object out of the air and looked at it for a moment. "
I don't know what to say... thank you Ser!"

A journey through the Vale Empty Re: A journey through the Vale

Post by Kevan Lyras Sun Aug 30, 2015 8:20 pm

Scene 4: An odd couple
Kevan was sitting in one of the busier taverns of Oxcross. He was talking to the patrons, spending rounds for visitors and in general trying to get to know the present drinkers. Mostly, he was looking for third and fourth sons of minor nobles. Men free to choose what to do with their life, maybe even having enjoyed education in the use of arms, but who are not important enough to inherit any title or lands and from poor houses, so they cannot afford to spend their lives idle.
Things were not going overly well. He had spent the night before in another tavern and managed to meet a few men interested in joining working for House Marsten, but overall the lack of interest was quite pungent.
He was about to call it a day, when a voice from the back of the tavern was calling his name: “Ser, Ser! You are Ser Kevan Lyras, right? The famous runner of the Tourney in Riverrun? Please, could you tell us the story of how you defeated Ser Meddric Manderly, the knight from White Harbour?”
The voice belonged to Benjen, who now walked up towards Kevan, still babbeling about Kevan’s exploits. He walked up to the Lyras knight and between his acting he whispered to him “You have no idea how to excite these bored nobles, if you want to successfully recruit, play along”.
The present crowd was getting interested in the whole fuss and several seemed to remember that they had heard about the Tourney and its outcome and the gathered around him, wanting to hear more. For the next half an hour, Kevan managed to entertain the men with his story, heavily supported by Ben who was asking just the right questions to keep the things going at the end, several men expressed their desire to serve under the new Keeper of the Gates, promising to travelling to Hartshome in the next weeks to enter House Marsten’s service.
As the two finally left the tavern, Kevan patted his young friend on the back. “Thank you Benjen, you really know how to put on a show.”
“It seemed like you could use my help and after what you did for me earlier, it only seemed right. You are an honest man, Ser Kevan, and I would like to join you on your journey. I feel like I can learn more from you than from anyone in this town. Oh and I have something for you” he pulled something out of his coat and threw it over to Kevan, it was the money purse, he received earlier.

For the next couple of weeks, the two travelled through several similar towns putting on their recruiting show like old veterans. Sometimes it was Benjen starting his “Kevan the famous Tourney knight” routine, other times they staged warfare discussions, where Kevan could show his might as a commander.

Scene 5: A gauntlet thrown

"
... and then I had to run from the knight's men, naked like on the day of my birth except for my boots! Hahahaha"

Rog Thanders, the old merchant they had met on the road a couple of hours ago, was just finishing one of his filthy stories as the party was arriving at the sturdy wooden bridge. Benjen was sitting on the back of Rog's cart, Ser Kevan riding along the draft animals.

As they were about to ride onto the bridge, a voice called out of the shadows of the nearby woods. "
Ho! Isn't that Ser Kevan, the Marsten knight in shining armour? The whole Vale is talking about your exploits and it seems no matter in which inn I am staying over night, you are the talk of the day!"

Out of the woods came a tall young knight, sitting on a white horse, his shield sporting three black ravens and three hearts. "
So it seems like there is just no way around beating you at your own game to cease this talk and let me eat my meals in peace."
he laughed at his own jest before continuing: "
Ser, my name is Ser Hyle Corbray. I challenge you to a duell to be decided in a joust!"

Kevan's facial expression showed mere disinterest, at the knight's brash words, but his two companions' eyes lighted up. "
A duel! Kevan, you gotta show him!"
the boy shouted and the merchant was sensed an opportunity: "
A splendid idea! We are only a half an hour from the small town of Leywich. The town's market yard would be an excellent place for such an occasion. We could gather the inhabitants, maybe I could sell snacks and wine...."
The boy joined in: "
It would also help with your recruiting, Ser!"

Finally, Kevan seemed to be convinced: "
Fine, Ser Hyle, I accept you challenge, I will meet you tomorrow at noon on the market yard of Leywich!"

A journey through the Vale Empty Re: A journey through the Vale

The next day, Kevan prepared for his duel. Benjen and Rog had managed to gather quite a crowd and the merchant was busy selling food to the visitors. Benjen acted as Kevan's squire, though it took considerably longer than under normal circumstances, as the boy had no idea how to handle all the straps and strings on his armour.

Finally, Ser Hyle rode up as well, on his white shiny horse, just as on the day before. Benjen made a show out of the presentation. Running up and down the yard, he introducted the two knights.
"
On the left side, we have the famous runner up of the Tourney at Riverrun, Keeper of the Gates for House Marsten, a true example of a knight, Ser Keeeevan Lyraaaas! And in the other end of the jousting lane, the young challenger looking for glory, a son of a prestigious House, Ser Hyyyle Corbray!"

The crowd roared and the two riders lowered their lances for the first tilt....

(OOC yeah he takes a additional 1 damage per DOS making the damage total 8, did you factor in the charge damage +2 into your DOS damage? Even if you spent a DP to gain an additional bonus die he got higher then a 15 so there is no way to make him fail with only 3 DOS)

The heavy blow from Ser Kevans lance rocks the young knight. As he turns around and prepares himself for another pass he decides to go for high in the saddle, hoping that the additional weight will unseat Ser Kevan from his horse

: 7d6k4+2 11 (terrible roll)
: 5d6k3 12 -2 = 10

Agility 3 Animal Handling 3 (Ride 2B), Athletics 3, Awareness 3, Endurance 4, Fighting 5 (Long Blades 2B, Shields 1B, Spears 2B), Status 4, Warfare 3, Will 3
Passive Ride = 14
Health = 4/12
AR = 10
F/I/W 0/0/0
(OOC you will have to have 2 DOS to unseat him but he does not make it past your passive ride so no damage is incoming.)

After both knights held on to their horses in the first round, they prepared for the second tilt and both decided to ride aggressively standing high in their saddle. However, while Kevan's lance hit his mark perfectly, his young opponent aimed too high and missed completely. The power of Kevan's hit lifted him from his saddle and he landed hard on the market yard. The crowed cheered as the Marsten knight turned his horse around and dismounted next to his fallen opponent. He offered him a hand and pulled him up from the ground.
"
You rode well Ser Hyle. You still need some experience but you are a skilled jouster!"

"
Thank you Ser!"
, the young knight answered low-spirited. "
I am afraid I have to send a message to Heart's Home, as I don't have enough silver stags on me to pay the ransom for my armour and horse."

Ser Kevan thought about that for a moment before he replied. "
You know Ser, I am not going to take any ransom from you. Your challenge was brash and another knight would take advantage of such a situation, but I was once a young knight too. As I said, you are skilled and the time will come, where you will need these skills for matters more important than duels for prestige and glory. I hope you remember that."

Ser Hyle seems to be taken aback by Kevan's words, but his mood brightened as he realized that he would not need to send a message to his father to pay to confess his folly. "
Thank you Ser, that is very generous of you!"

As Kevan walked over to Benjen and the merchant to get out of his armour, the young boy still couldn't believe it: "
You didnt take his armour? That would have sold for more money than I have ever seen in my life?! What is wrong with you? He deserved it!"
, but the Marsten knight only lifted his hand in a placating manner.. "
Calm down Benjen, I know this is a lot of money, especially for somebody that grew up in poverty. But in my position, there are more important things than silver and gold. I can only wear one plate armour, and I can only ride one horse at a time. My sword is excellent and I could pay for mine and your food during our whole trip, no? But a young knight owing me a favour - that is something that could be worth a lot more someday..."

A journey through the Vale Empty Re: A journey through the Vale

Post by Kevan Lyras Thu Oct 08, 2015 10:25 pm

A boy is born...

Kevan made it back home in time. It seemed as if the boy had waited to arrive in this world until he was present. It was the first night since the Marsten knight had returned from the battle against the mercenaries, when his wife woke him up and Septa Heloise rushed into the room ready to support Lady Sofia. The small woman shouted for a page to bring her a tub of hot water before shoving Ser Kevan out of the room. "
Mylord, there is no place for you in here, begging my pardon, but you would only be in the way!"
with these words she closed the door infront of Kevan, who was left on his own...

The sun was already rising, when the door opened again and a beaming Septa motioned for Kevan, who had been waiting on a stone bench nearby, to come in. "
Ser, come in and welcome your son!"
He entered the room, where he found his exhausted wife with a tiny body nestled in her arms. "
My Love, I present you your son and heir, Robbin Lyras"

Carefully she lifted him up for Kevan to hold his son. He was beautiful with his dark eyes and tiny hands and he already had hair on his head, a light blond that is...
