Errant Errands
"Almost done," Aerion gave the red-faced shopkeep a small smile, then grunted as he stooped to pick up the last of the casks. There weren't many more that could fit on the little wayn, it was already likely to be unsteady on the hillier parts of the ride back. Ser Harbert Baratheon did nothing halfway, including throwing a feast. There'd been some retinue or another -- a big one, rumors said, with more guards than usual -- making its way through the heart of the city earlier, and quite a few deliveries had been disrupted in the process.
A knight is punctual, nephew. Warfare's all about timing, he'd said, then, sending out his senior squire to gather up the foodstuffs that hadn't been delivered on time. Warfare may be all about timing, but squiring, all too often, seemed to divert back to being page-work.
The burly bastard heaved the last cask of ale into the back of the wayn, wedging it in place amidst the others, a few crates, a stack of sacks. The cart was a bright Baratheon yellow, with a cavorting row of prancing stags all 'round the edges, done in black. Storm wore the same colors, today, making his way through King's Landing, wearing Ser Harbert's family colors. His family colors, of a sort. Almost.
Aerion had just swung a leg up over his brown mare -- a good, solid, rounsey -- and grabbed the lead-line for Slowfoot, Ser Harbert's old mule, when the hue and cry started.
Murderers, someone shouted, with a voice like a scared child. Traitors to the Crown, a shrill, woman's voice. Arrest those men, in the name of the King! came from a strong, deep, baritone, accustomed to command; some loyal knight, or a member of the city watch, Aerion wasn't certain. Hold! Hold, I sa-- the powerful voice managed, before being cut off and falling to a gurgle.
Then the hue and cry gave way to just screaming, wordless exclamations of fear and death, and the incongruous mess of a battlefield came roaring down the street and into view. The row of shops became, instead, all flashing blades, trampling feet, and a group of house guard carving their way through the heart of the city, fighting anyone in their way and anyone who tried to stop them. A knot of men in armor, surcoats of blue-green, sporting a silver seahorse apiece, but dripping in blood, were baring red steel at interlopers and too-slow smallfolk alike.
Aerion paused just long enough to grab the yellow-painted shield slung to his saddle horn, and to give the shopkeep a good, hard, stare and a firm point -- "Stay inside, I'll be back!" -- before he kicked his heels to his loyal mare and drew his sword.
[I'd like to try my hand at slinging some dice in a fairly straightforward combat, while also back-filling a little. I'll be tackling some handful of Velaryon man-at-arms ("tertiary characters"), trying to restore peace to the streets of King's Landing. I have never before rolled dice in anger; bear with me as I try to wrap my head around the rulebook and the peculiarities of forum posting.]

"Perfect! Yes this will do nicely, here is the payment thanks again." Darron finishes up his testing of the axe he had sharpened from one of the local blacksmiths in and around King's Landing stepping outside he prepares to set off and attend to the other odd jobs he was finishing up when the screams broke the hustle and bustle. Not too far away a guardsman is cut down as soldiers work there way through the streets.
He then sees a lone horseman getting ready to charge the group wearing plain clothes. "More ball's than sense in that one." Darron think's to himself, but if these people continue who knows how many will be hurt. Darron reenters the door way of the blacksmith and takes the closest shield he can find and with a shout of "Just need to borrow this", makes his way to help the ballsy horseman.

I can roll for a couple enemies. Since there's two of you, you wanna take 4 of them? Word to the wise, halberds are nasty weapons.
- Aerion's armor:
- Aerion, personally I'd let you retcon what armor you're wearing. Given that Harbert's a Baratheon, he must have heard about the time the Velaryons antagonized the queen about her children's heritage the once already, and may have told you to wear armor when visiting King's Landing. With the Greens and Blacks at each other's throats these days, and being from a well-known and respected house siding with one of those factions, one can never be too careful.

Thanks, Baelon and/or Loreia (the more the merrier)!
So I don't want you to think I'm ignoring the advice, but I made my call. I'll stick with it.
I appreciate the suggestion (since I know it comes from combat experience, Shield Maiden!), and I'm certain that wearing heavier armor would be the smart thing to do. But...I made my bed, and I'm determined to lie in it. I know we're using the advanced combat rules, I'm starting atop a horse (which gives me some advantages/options)...I think I can take two of 'em, if I'm understanding stuff right and fighting smart. And, hey, worst case scenario, I've got DP and stuff.

[I can respect that.]
"Get th' fuck outta the way!" One man at arms yells at the smallfolk spry enough to run. "Make way for th' Velaryons!"
When he sees the armorless young man wearing Baratheon livery riding up on a rounsey, he scoffs, yet tightens up formation, just as as he spots a man with the salty look of a sailor rushing up behind. Might be Ironborn, he thinks, but this one's a Green! What the hell? "Unhorse an' make fucking way, ya blind shit!"

Re: Errant Errands
Here's a map I whipped up based on the RP posts. A T-intersection, the Valyrian soldiers came from the north and turned left down the narrower street. Aerion was in that street, and is now essentially blocking their path. Darron was in a shop at the southern corner of the intersection, so he could see both the Valyrian soldiers and Aerion.

[Total bulk reduces enemys' movement to 2 yrds.]
Minor surprise on the soldiers' faces when they notice the Baratheon squire isn't halting his horse. Man-at-arms 1 & 2 rush up to Aerion, both dashing to meet him head-on rather than wait for him to strike first.
V1 & 2 both Charge Aerion. V1 to J4. V2 to J3.
Errant Errands - Charging Aerion: 2#5d6k3 15 14
V1 gets 2 DoS. V2 gets 1 DoS.
Damage after AR: 13 (V1), 6 (V2)

- Helping hand with rules:
- Address each attack by itself. Take injuries/wounds for the first, then the other. On your turn, you may declare use of Fatigue if attacked to increase CD and how many times; not "if it hits or does damage" etc. Fatigue/Injuries: -1 per point taken. Wounds: -1D per wound. Wounds reduce kept dice, not bonus dice. 5d6 becomes 5d6k4 when taking a wound.
Bastard Swords have Adaptable quality, gaining +1 with two hands. House Rule: gain Powerful quality as well, when held in two hands (+1 damage per Strength bonus die.
By the looks of it, you'll have to take 1 Wound to survive. Don't take an Injury to get back to full health, save it until absolutely necessary, to keep rolling awesome.
Defeating enemies: Tertiary characters have no DP, so they can't choose to not die when defeated. You may choose consequences: Death, Unconscious, Leave for Dead (and maybe possible in this case, Take the Black). Enemies don't have to die in battle, unless you want them to.
[I'll let Baelon handle the guards attacking Darron.]

Re: Errant Errands
[OOC]
I think you shorted them on damage - the attack roll looks right: 6k4, -1B training -1D Charge = 5k3
On a charge they do 9 Damage per DoS, though: 3 Athletics + 3 Halberd, +1 Strength/Powerful, + 2 Charge
So it should be 18-1 = 17 for the first, and 9-1 - 8 for the second.
You can take a fatigue to ignore a wound on your attack, so you would be at -1 on it instead of -1D... for long fights that can wear you out fast, but I suspect you won't have much difficulty taking these mooks out in short order - as tertiary characters they cannot take injuries or wounds.

- Huh:
- In my head, I was a good bit farther away than that, yeah. Not trying to sound like sour grapes here, but my plan was to take advantage of my war-trained steed and the movement advantages it gives me, to let me kind of control the pace of battle, use Cautious Attack, etc. I hate to retcon the whole batch of rolls, there, but I also hate to start a fight getting hacked to pieces because it turns out I was only three yards away from these guys the whole time.

Re: Errant Errands
- About that...:
- That's part of why I asked about starting position and didn't immediately roll attacks - we can certainly retcon and move you back without too much difficulty.
However.... with Aerion being mounted and out of their range, they would most likely be expecting to receive a charge, and rather than sit around and wait for you, they would prepare a counter-attack. Other than a few case-by-case situations (war lance charge vs greatsword being the only case that's come up), the readied attack happens first. Now, as you are talking about moving in and using Cautous Attack (a good plan, btw), they would not get the +2 damage for receiving a charge, but they would be attacking with their full dice (5d6k4). That would make the second hit 2 DoS, too. You would take 2 hits of 14-1 = 13 damage, requiring either 2 wounds or 2 Injuries and 1 Wound to stay in the battle.
Counter intuitive as it might seem, getting charged like this is actually slightly better for you.
I don't think it's too late to retcon in your armor and shield, if you want. Verisimilitude is great, but this is not a very forgiving combat system to those not equipped for the fight.

- Oh...I'm sorry, I was too eager. It's also possible to Trample instead of charge, and he's on a horse which has a full 8 Movement. I'd be okay to just Set for Charge and then try the Charge on the guards' next turn, whatever Baelon/Reader think is best.

No worries, Loreia. I'm not gonna be grouchy at someone being eager to act, and it was just my bad timing for going AFK when I did and missing my chance.
Instead of remove die rolls and modify actions and play "what if" and blah blah blah, I'll just roll with it. I'm not trying to be a sore loser here or anything, trust me. What I'd like to do is just retcon in his shield -- a nod to the troubles in town, and easy enough to have slung on a saddle, without him clanking around in his pathetically heaviest armor, just to go to the store -- and make him CD 12 instead of 10, if that's okay with everyone. That makes both hits 1 DoS, for 7 points each (6 after armor). He'll just eat the first one and have 3 health left, then take 2 injuries from the second (-6 damage, no damage gets through).
And then I'll wait for my turn, with the two baddies right there in J3 and J4.
Sound okay?

- Sure, sure! Although...
Baelon got it right, -AR making it 8 damage each. Still, not as bad as it would have been otherwise. So what you're looking at is...Baelon wrote:[OOC]

No need to spend Injuries/Wounds to negate first (remaining health: 1), and then 3 Injuries or 1 Wound to negate all damage from the second attack.
Thankfully Mounted adds 1B fighting, and also +2 damage if you don't move during your turn. I would advise not moving out of threat range, as that would trigger a Free Attack from whoever you're moving away from, which is passive Fighting vs your Combat Defense.

Re: Errant Errands
As the leading two Seahorse-clad men launch themselves at the squire, the two in the rear turn and move to surround the Ironborn. The first attempts to upend the Kraken by hooking his leg with the spike on the backside of the soldier's halberd, but Darron is able to nimbly avoid the clumsy attempt. The other soldier takes advantage of Darron's split attention and charges forth to deliver a wicked cut... which simply careens off of his opponent's plate, causing no harm.

Re: Errant Errands
- Formulation:
- I'm not just eager to hit someone, I'm also wanting to make sure I understand everything. I want to use a Lesser Action to Ride/maintain control (I don't see a difficulty for that, I think it's just an action tax, right?). Then a Lesser Action to Cautious Attack.
Fighting 5, Long Blades 1 (so specialty and training requirement cancel out). So...functionally, 5k5, at this point, or rather 5k5-3 from Injuries. Animal Handling, on a war-trained steed, means I can add my AH ranks as bonus dice. So 10k5 (-3). Mounted Attacks says another +1B (plus a damage bonus since I don't move (which will make up for not wielding two-handed, for now). Cautious Attack for -1D (+3 CD), means I'm rolling 11k4 (-3), is that right?

Re: Errant Errands
- More mounted combat stuff for Aerion:
- I was just typing this up, and saw your post... so now, tailored to you:
The action to control your mount is more or less handwaived away on wartrained steeds. Otherwise you can't charge on horseback without taking a fatigue, which makes no sense. That means you have a second lesser action to work with, but keep in mind that you are limited to 1 attack per round (other than the sub-par divided attack option).
Popular options are:
aim (does nothing for you with all the mounted bonuses)
knockdown (can get you an additional +1D in your attack)
maneuver (to move your opponent around and apply penalties to their rolls - best done after your attack)
there are other options too.
5 fighting and 1B. Yes, That would normally that would be 5d6 even, after training penalty.
6d6k5 base, +5B for AH, +1B for facing unmounted foes, -1B for training. That would normally be 11d6k5, but you are limited by your 5 fighting to 5 bonus dice, for a total of 10d6k5. Making a Cautious Attack does impart a -1D penalty. It is important to note that Die penalties are applied last, and only affect the dice kept, not the dice rolled. That puts you at 10d6k4.
With injury penalties, 10d6k4-3, however you do have the option of using a fatigue to cancel those penalties for 1 round, improving your roll to 10d6k4-1 (-1 for the fatigue you just took). Of course, that only lasts for a round, and then next round you would be at a combined -4, so it may not be worth it, especially seeing you have such a high attack to begin with.
As for Damage... I take you have 4 Athletics? One handed with a bastard sword, that would mean normally 4+1 = 5 damage per DoS. With the bonus for being mounted and not moving, that would be 7 damage per DoS.
