Re: Errant Errands
Aerion makes it in past the edges of their halberds, but not for lack of trying. All the squire can do is trust in his height and shield as they counter-charge, and pray -- Warrior, please, she's a fine horse -- they attack him, not his unbarded rounsey.
They oblige.
He buckles down behind his yellow-painted shield, and a jolt of pain rocks up his arm and to his shoulder as the first wicked axe-blade bites deep. The second swings in with a mighty overhand blow, and with his Baratheon-blazoned shield still half-caught by the first Velaryon's polearm, Aerion can only bring his oversized longsword up in a parry and lean to change the distance; to his credit, it almost works. His skull doesn't split, at least, and his heavy blade almost makes it a clean miss. The heavy haft rocks against his right shoulder, and he feels a rush of heat down his back, telling him the edge of the blade caught him, not just the sturdy wooden pole.
Well, he grunts with exertion as he twists his shield wide to the left, jerking the first footman's blade-caught halberd with it, far out of line for any sort of parry. Let's see if me arm still works.
The Valyrion has just a second to widen his eyes and realize his predicament, then the bastard's bastard sword arcs up and over and down, cutting into his armored shoulder and almost buckling his knees. In the same motion that Aerion uses to recover the blade and realign his focus on the dangerous second mat-at-arms -- hands in close, blade up, guard yourself -- he just drags the long blade in a draw-cut, right across the injured man's throat. He's left to gurgle in the cobbles, the weight of him tumbling finally tugging his pole-axe free.
As the second Valyrion's bringing his heavy poleaxe to bear again, edge of the blade slick with Aerion's blood, the mass of a trusty brown mare nudges at him, egged on by Aerion's squeezing knees and a lifetime of war-training by Ser Harbert's finest. The horse barges straight into the footman, knocking him backwards and off-balance, right at the stalls and goods that edge the market street.

CD 7, so hit by 11, so 3x7 for 21 damage, -5 for Breastplate, he takes 16. Against a (minor) NPC, I believe that's a kill, correct?
I'll make a Maneuver test against Valyrion #2 (in fluff, also using the horse to help with it), for my other Lesser Action, then. Gonna jostle/kick/bash him up into 2I if I can (maybe for his halberd having an extra penalty tangled up in shop stalls and stuff).
Gonna post the prose part once I'm sure all my math is right and stuff. Also, just FYI, but I have Blood of Andals (rerolled a 1 each time, but neither time came up good enough to matter, so just didn't post them).

[Yep, that's all correct! It doesn't say Tertiary characters can't take Fatigue...but I didn't specify in my post, so fair's fair. V1 is dead. On the other hand, even if he did take Fatigue, 2 DoS would still be enough to do exactly 9 dmg. And sorry for declaring him dead, I believe that's up to you isn't it? ]

Re: Errant Errands
Feeling the halberd bounce off Darron attempts to swing around and cut down one of the would be attackers.
Fighting (Axes): 8d6k5 21
3 DOS for 15 Damage reduced to 10 exceeding health.
Consequence: Unconscious
The strike does indeed hit and the foe is defeated laying sprawled out on the ground.
Darron turns his attention to the man who attempted to knock him down and does the same back using his borrowed shield.
Knockdown TN 12: 4d6k4 14
The shield clatters against the armour of the man sending him onto his back.

You're kind of hitting a lot of the more complicated options - not a bad thing in the slightest, it just means that there's more explanation to be done.
Maneuver is a fighting test, so you do get the extra dice for being mounted, but Reader has ruled that it's not a weapon attack, so the training penalty from your sword doesn't apply. Moreover, the -1D for cautious only applies to the attack, so your Maneuver would have been 10d6k5-3. You can just take the highest unkept die from that last roll and add it in, no need to reroll the whole thing. Actually, you don't need to do anything, I can figure this out. A result of 20 means 23 on the dice; on 4 dice kept that has to be [6,6,6,5]. that means the top unkept die could be anywhere from 1-5, yielding a range of 21 to 25. Against a passive Fighting of 16, both ends of that range are 2 DoS, so that's what you got.
Ether way you succeed at the maneuver, but the distance you can move your foe is determined by how many DoS you get. Each DoS allows for up to 1 yard of movement. I2 is a fine option (the stuff getting in the way of the halberd is as good an explanation of the -1D as any, and better than many). However, H2 is also an option, with the added benefit that they would have to move to reach you, meaning they can't aim, try to pull you from your horse, etc. without taking fatigue for an extra lesser action.

- The next die up was a 5 (I still have the roll to the link, I just can't post them), just FYI. So a 25 total (but yeah, 2 DoS either way).
I thought he might still be stuck at I2 either way, since the clutter, etc, takes double movement to move through (and thought that might count for maneuvering him into it, also). But I'll take H2 if I can get it, the more distance, the more the move looks like it worked.
Do we roll init every round, or is it static after the first time?

Ah, I see what you were thinking. Hm. come to think of it, you would probably be right about treacherous terrain slowing maneuver movement as well as voluntary, which means H2 is probably off the table, but H3 is available... mechanically the same for our purposes, but not as interesting.Aerion Storm wrote:The next die up was a 5 (I still have the roll to the link, I just can't post them), just FYI. I don't mind "rule of cool" being applied here and saying H2 anyway, as it would not make a difference compared to H3... actually, it's mechanically the same as from I2 as well. For some reason I was thinking you were moving them directly northward. I say we fudge it for cool factor - we're all clear on it being technically incorrect, should a similar situation come up later when it actually matters.
Also I just realized that when I trimmed the top and bottom of the map to make it fit better I didn't adjust the numbering, so there's no 1 row.
For combat and intrigues it's the same. For warfare it changes each round. There's actually a good reason why warfare changes, but that's getting off topic...Aerion Storm wrote:Do we roll init every round, or is it static after the first time?

- I was moving him directly away from me (so NW). Whatever works, though, in terms of exactly where he ends up; Aerion's desire was to create distance, and get his halberd-wielding, armor-wearing, opponent slowed down and off-balance in some cluttered marketplace stuff. I'll let you pick and update the map.
And...Velaryons are up next, top of round two!

Re: Errant Errands
Half their force defeated, the other half out of fighting form, things are looking bleak for the Velaryon troops. They were desperate to make it to the ship before it left, though - and that meant getting through these two.
The one thrown back by Aerion's horse clambers out stumbles all but on top of his defeated comrade, thinking to himself that his escape would be much faster if he could just get that horse for himself. In his haste however, he does not see that the butt-end of his halberd has become tangled in a dyer's work in progress, dragging a cloth - sopping wet and reeking of acrid substances. The extra weight fouls the balance, and Aerion is easily able to deflect the blow with his shield. With a snarl the man shakes the cloth free.
Meanwhile, in a feat of agility and adrenaline, the soldier at Darron's feet nimbly leaps up and, desperate to defeat or at least drive off his foe puts his full force into the next attack, saving nothing for his own defense. It strikes the Plate-clad Ironborn in the side, crushing and rending the metal with a horrid shriek. Truly a blow that would have felled a lesser man.
OOC:
Velaryon 2: move to J4 Attack Aerion, -1D: 5d6k3 11 vs CD 12 - an outright miss.
Velaryon 3: Agility to free-action stand Agility to stand: 3d6-2 9 Success
Velaryon 3: Greater action: Reckless Attack: 6d6k5 23 vs CD 10, 3 DoS, 21 - 9AR = 12 damage.
Both solders will take fatigue to ignore AP if (when) attacked - not that it will likely matter, against these two doughty combatants.

Re: Errant Errands
Ser Harbert's shield will need more than new paint -- Warrior, these desperate men hit hard! -- as another powerful halberd strike gouges into the wood, though Aerion's better able to brace the shield, this time, better able to absorb the blow.
All the less luck for the madly-swinging Velaryon soldier. The tip of the bastard's sword comes up from below, catching on the halberd's axe head and steering it only just a little off to one side. Then down it slides, over-long blade, tip just easing smoothly down the polearm's haft, into the gap between Velaryon helmet and Velaryon armor, and pushing down, down, down, past the collarbone and into the man's chest.
There's a terrible, red, sucking sound as Storm withdraws the blade and wheels his horse about, ready to strike down the next Seahorse, and the next, until the King's peace is restored and the folk of King's Landing are unmolested.
Fighting, V #2, horseback, injuries, etc: 10d6k4-3 16
Fighting reroll, Blood of Andals (rerolling 1): 1d6 6
[effectively 6, 6, 5, 4, for an 18 total, thanks to the reroll]

Mea culpa, yes. Either way, a miss... though if you had done neither the previous cautious attack nor the meneuver it would have been a hit. Each one individually was sufficient to stop it - the soldier simply had a mediocre roll.Aerion Storm wrote:(Just FYI, but I thought Aerion's CD was a 15 this round, from the Cautious Attack, not that it looked like it mattered)
It would be, but the soldier is taking a fatigue to ignore AP for the round, bringing his CD up to 9 so an 18 is just shy of 3 DoS. As you are still dealing 7 damage per DoS, however, that is still enough to drop him. (9 damage exact after AR)Aerion Storm wrote:Repeating the same Lesser Action from last round, a Cautious Attack.

Re: Errant Errands
- I cocked up:
- Gritting his teeth Darron locks eyes with the Velaryon that just struck him.
Taking 1 injury due to being at 0 health which triggers a free attack against the guy.
Berserk: 5d6 13 Forgot to account for the -1 Still 10 above his CD of 2(7 -5 for reckless)
3 Dos 15 - 5 = 10
Consequence: Death
With his defence wide open Darron with a shout of anger swings his axe at the Velaryon cutting deep into his neck, a fatal wound. Darron kicks the mans body away from him. "You!" He shouts at the man pointing his axe before charging at the man.
Taking fatigue to get extra lesser action to aim.
Fighting (Axes) + Aim - Charge: 8d6k4-2 9
Four ones and three twos my god what a bad roll.
1 DOS 7 - 5 = 2
Darron's axe finds a gap in the mans armour but isn't enough to end the fight just yet.
Darron Greyjoy CD 10 AR 9 4/12 F1 I1 W0
Yea I didn't realise they had spent fatigue so the guy isn't actually dead Just figuring out what my rolls are.

A vicious swing from his axe catches the Velaryon cutting deep but not enough to finish him off. Darron prepares to swing again this time aiming to make sure its over.

The second swing lands near where the first hit and finishes off the Velaryon and with that Darron has finished off his two he watches if the horseman needs help.

Aerion wheels his brown mare around in full circle, shield up, sword at the ready, looking for any more blue-green soldiers. There's the sound of fighting in the distance, but swarms of gold cloaks run by, too, and he's not sure which way to charge to help anyone.
"Are you hurt?" He hollers down to the axeman, eyes scanning the street.
"And well met, either way," he adds, almost as an afterthought.

"Yes, well met to you, i'm surprised you were able to handle yourself as well as you did. Don't see many people running headlong into battle with nay but plain clothes unless there lives are at stake."

"I suppose so. Still not many would do the same if they were in your situation. A credit to your honour."
Darron finishes checking the guy disarming him of anything he could see.
"So guess this guys coming with us to the keep. Care to put him on your horse? I don't exactly wish to strain this injury by carrying him on my back."
(He would have a sigil of house Longshore on him and he is clearly a Ironborn from just hearing him talk and seeing his face. The armour is well kept and besides the now new damage is pretty well made. Hope that's enough to go off as all I kept coming back to was he doesn't look like he is poor but isn't exactly wearing noble clothes.)

Re: Errant Errands
"It's that or drag him, I suppose." The latter was tempting, and the affronted smallfolk may appreciate it...but unseemly.
Aerion dismounts, gives the man-at-arms his own once over -- not that he doesn't trust the Ironborn to take anything of value, weapons included, but it's his horse, thanks, and he'll not risk his trusty mare if the Valyrion has a dagger or summat hidden -- then stoops to haul him up and over, sprawled across the rounsey's back.
Heh. Not long earlier, he'd been hefting casks of ale. Now prisoners. King's Landing's a queer city; mayhaps best to wear armor next time. That reminds him, though...
"Shopkeep! I'll return for the wayn soon. Tend to your neighbors as best you can."
As he and the Ironborn walk, brown mare led obediently, to find some proper authories, Aerion finally remembers his manners. Blood cooling, his civility returns.
"And my name is Aerion Storm. Yours?"

Re: Errant Errands
A smirk comes across Darron's face when he hears Storm.
"Darron Greyjoy, a pleasure i'm sure." Darron chuckles
"So, pulling a cart, you don't exactly learn to swing a sword doing that. Are you a sell sword in your spare time?"
