[Day 2: Late Morning] Words Between Men (Closed)
Jon looked over the arrangements in the secluded garden once more. Yes, this will do very nicely. A table for two, a good selection of meats, cheeses and ale, and - best of all - only a small chance of prying eyes and ears. Now all he had to do was hope that young Dunstan would accept his invitation...
Jon sat down at the table and helped himself to some of the food and ale. No point in negotiating on an empty stomach...

Re: [Day 2: Late Morning] Words Between Men (Closed)
Dunstan was exactic to read the letter inviting him over for breakfast from Ser Jon, his childhood hero.
Although this would be his second breakfast he gladly accepted. Rushing through Riverton with Alyn, Sam, Hendry and Roland he almost broke the door knob as he entered the Painted World.
"
Ser Jon! Good Morning to you!"
he said and sat down on the table.
Young Hendry quickly began gazing at the beauties around him and Roland took a seat next to Dunstan. One guard stayed in front and one stood next to the table.

"
And a good morning to you, m'lord Dunstan. It was very gracious of you to accept my invitation at such short notice."
Jon replies, rising quickly from his seat to give Dunstan a bow. "
But really,"
he continues with a crooked grin, "
four armed guards for a meeting with a battered old soldier such as myself? I assure you my intentions are wholly peaceful. Or do I sense the overprotective hand of your uncle at work here?"

"
Quite an interesting choice you made regarding the place to live in during the tourney"
Dunstan says, and looking to the girls adds, "
I can't blame you either!"
.
"
Lordly position requires Lordly companions, They are here to look sharp and carry our sigil. Be lucky there is not more of them, you would not believe how many soldiers applied for guard duty when they heard I was heading to the brothel of all places!"
.
Dunstan gave Ser Jon a sideways look when heard the mention of his dear uncle but firmly believed it was all in good will as the two seem to be friends.

Jon smiles at Dunstan's enthusiasm, feeling himself warming to the young lord. He really is a good lad, just as Theomore said.
"
That's a most generous offer, m'lord, but I think I'll keep my bed here at the Painted World for now. You see, the older I get, the less I find that these famous bones of mine will suffer a camp bed willingly. Soft arms and a soft bed are my preferred sleeping arrangements these days - I'm sure a strapping young lord such as yourself can appreciate that,"
he replies with a sly grin.
"
Now, you have kindly offered me your friendship, though you know little of me but my reputation, but you should be careful of so quickly extending your hand in friendship, for there are many who would take advantage of such kindness."
Jon's manner is serious and sincere as he continues. "
Fortunately, I am not such a man, and I shall give you the means to find that out for yourself. For example, I would say that your uncle Theomore and I are friendly, and he has my respect, but I do not think Theomore would call me his friend if you asked him directly. But I believe that Brom Bartheld has been staying at Mountain's Reach recently, is that not so? Well, Brom is a man I count among my closest friends in the world, and if you asked him, then he would tell you that I am a man who stands by his friends through thick and thin. So, I am happy to call you my friend, Lord Dunstan, but you should speak to one or both of these men first, and then decide for yourself if your offer of friendship still stands."

Lord Brom is a long time guest at our home, and I do enjoy his company greatly. There is always much to learn from experienced men such as you and Brom and I do try to heed every piece of advice. House Tullison is a friendly one and I must be a friendly Lord than, don't I! If there is anyone to try and deceive and scheme around us we will endure and fight back! That much you can count on."
Dunstan says sounding sure of himself.
"
I am lucky to be surround by only the best of family and council. Young man, Nathaniel is his name, spoke to me yesterday about problems in the House you serve at the moment Ser Jon. It was unsettling to hear the news of an uncle trying to take place of his own brothers heir. In House fighting and scheming sounds much worse than our problems if you ask me."
Dunstan says and snaps the bone of the chicken wing standing on the table.

So, a prostitute by the name of Nathan who claims to know the inner workings of House Bartheld?"
Jon appears lost in thought for a moment. "
Would he be of about average height, very pretty, with dark brown hair and blue eyes? In that case it would be Nathan from the Rutting Boar, the only brothel in Bartheld lands. Some say he secretly runs the place, for all that he's barely a man grown."
Fixing his eyes on Dunstan, Jon continues, "
Well, I don't know that sort of a cock-and-bull story he tried to feed you, friend Dunstan, but you're right, I do know my way about whores, and one thing I know for certain is that they're all liars. It's not that they're bad people, it's just that lying is how they make their living. Even the cheapest whore is selling her customer the fantasy that, right then and there, there's no better lover than him. So if I were you, I'd take anything young Nathan tells you with a barrel full of salt. He'll tell you whatever he thinks you want to hear, and eventually he'll try to extract some payment from you for his stories...unless someone else is already paying him."
Yield counter-offer: Current dispositions remain the same, and Jon gets +1D on his next intrigue against Dunstan. That's a better outcome than if Jon wins this. Your offer, unfortunately, is a net loss for Jon as things stand.

Well, I'm sorry to see you leave in such a hurry, m'lord, but of course you must attend to your obligations first. And never fear, I am not a man who is easily offended. Though I would like to say that you misunderstand me if you think that I think ill of whores - they are people who do what they must to survive, and that is worthy of respect. But respecting them and enjoying their company is one thing, trusting in their sincerity is another. So, if the matter of the Bartheld succession interests you, it might be wise to listen to more than one side of the story..."
Well, that ended badly. But I see what Theomore means - that is a very sheltered young man.
