The preparations for the tourney were almost all done. The joust was to start the following day after all. Ser Fendrel had already signed himself up for it, of course, he would never miss a chance to show off his jousting skills - even more so now, with House Bartheld's current situation and it was precisely this issue that brought him to seek the tourney master. He needed to have a couple of words with him concerning the chances of winning of various participants, including himself. Knowing that the man he was looking for would probably be busy the whole, Fendrel decided to seek him out in the morning, before the feast... possibly when there was still time to introduce some late corrections to the roster.

"
Ser Fredryk, I am very glad to have found you at last!"
He smiles, but quickly realises that it was probably expected of him to introduce himself as well, just in case the great moustache man didn't realise who he was addressed by, "
Ser Fendrel Bartheld, at your service. We met a year or so ago, did we not? Yes, I remember, you attended one of our renown balls. How did you like it? Did you think the wine was to your taste?"

Ser Fendrel takes his time in the conversation with the tourney master. He talks about the Bartheld parties that Ser Fredryk seems to have enjoyed greatly, attending them - as it became apparent - not once, but in truth a number of times. They discuss the good fun that Barthelds always provided, the prosperity that such balls lead to and the reputation and wealth needed to continue doing so. They brush on a number of topics, quality of wine and beauty of women being just two of them. While the Bartheld knight might have an ulterior motive for this meeting, he does not disclose it. Instead, he navigates the conversation, steering it subtly towards his intended outcome. He is, after all, a master at charm and tact. He is determined to get what he wants out of it - but also when he wants it. When he is sure that he has got the good Ser tangled in his honeyed words, he tells him what he wants. Even though the tourney master is not entirely thrilled to the prospect at first, he quickly warms up when Fendrel suggests a generous offer of coin. Taking advantage of the knight's vice, the deal is soon struck. It would not be of use to anyone, least of all the generous House Bartheld, to see their champion's reputation diminished if he were to fall too quickly in the joust, now would it?

The deal is done, and Ser Fredryk Vance is as good as his word, as subsequent events prove.

A rogue, but an honest rogue, was how he liked to think of himself since settling down at Riverrun.
