Re: [D6, Early night] What's in the box?
Baelon stares at Theomore incredulously.
"
Do you wish to get her killed, Ser? I doubt these zealots would accept a twisting of their words in good faith."
He shakes his head.
"
No;
we might be able to get away with a few squires, and maybe a Septon to serve as a witness. More than that and you would be signing Marei's death warrant.
Perhaps that may not seem like a large loss to you, but I suspect that others here would disagree with you."

Maybe we could send the best ranger in advance to scout the area, before we decide how to proceed? One talented scout should be able to get near the place without being spotted..."

"
I agree that we should be wary of a trap, whether or not these thugs are Ser Lionel's band or not. Scouting the area for hidden foes before we ride in is the least we should do, and keeping a force in reserve is also wise."
"
Lord Dunstan, we should also keep in mind that the most important thing is the safety of your men and the lass. We must determine where they are being held and be prepared to send a force to liberate them, no matter what the outcome of this 'trial'. Perhaps this could be a task for Loreia and Lady Dyana, if they be willing?"

I agree we should send scouts beforehand. And a force that could ride behind us, to make sure she is safe. I heed your council friends."
Dunstan says.
"
Lady Deana and Loreaia are, from what I saw, great warriors, and capable of leading man to battle, as Ser Jorah and Ser Baelon can probably attest. Having them as commanders of a unit that would ride behind us is a good idea, in my humble opinion."

Well, at least his secret is out. Hopefully that will stop Athelstan's little troublemaking offer for now.
"
If this is Ser Lionel Darry's work, their zealotry would stop them from breaking their word. We have one of his men in captivity. Perhaps he may know something."
He thought about Lord Dunstan's suggestion. Daveth was not going to like this.
"
I do not know about Lady Dyana, but Loreia would at least be able to keep any unit in line. Do we have anybody who would make a good scout?"

That is good thinking, Ser Jorah, but isn't "
Holy"
Harry held by Lord Tully? If so, Lord Dunstan will likely first have to reveal to Lord Tully why we urgently need to see a common bandit, and even if we do get to speak to him, do we have time to...convince...a fanatic to betray his brethren to the very heretics he hates? If I have heard correctly, time is of the essence, especially if we're to do any more than just ride to the meeting and fight Ser Lionel's band in the manner he decrees. "

"
Someone could go and question him, try to squeeze some information out of him. In the meantime, I've spent quite some time in the Inn, and there is a man who visit often - one Brandon Hill who commands a company of archers. I could go and pay him some coin to gather his men at the brink of dawn and hide around the woods of Harren's Justice."
Dunstan looks around to see the reaction of other knights,
"
And finally, Loreaia and Dyana could ride behind us, mayheaps one hour after we leave, with a plenty of Tullison men at arms. That way we would have archers ready to react in case the bandits try anything funny, and backup soldiers trailing behind us."

Re: [D6, Early night] What's in the box?
"
The tullison men at arms are not mounted, and we do need a force that can move more swiftly."
Theomore needs to interject on that account. "
And an hour is too long if we have need of them. Archers would be a good addition, but the number of horses involved? Might be we should make due with Brandon Hill and a few others? Lord Bryan should be persuadable to give Bill Burley leave to come with us, and our own Ser Mather is as good with the bow as any man, discounting those two of course."
Ser Mather had been a contender for the third place in the archery, if one bothered to count third places. "
I suggest we have a vanguard of seven knights with their squires, a small retinue of scouts and archers in front to ensure that this is no trap, and a force of cavalry a suitable distance behind in case there is a trap."
"
And whatever notion of glorious battle with seven knights on each side there may be amongst us, should a chance present itself where we may bring greater number than our foe into the fight without risking harm upon the captives, we will take it. The laws of gods and men are quite clear, as long as the high septon has agreed to disarm the faith and leave the judgement of sin to the father above when our time is due, Ser Lionel's challenge is no more than a challenge. And he is a murderer besides."

Lord Dunstan, even assuming one of us would be allowed to meet the prisoner at this late hour, you should be prepared for the possibility that he will probably have to be questioned vigorously if we are to get anything useful from him, and even then the danger is that he will only have told us what he thinks we want to hear."
"
I agree that the first order of business is to find out all we can about Ser Lionel and how large a force he commands, but it would be better to do so by questioning the locals here at Riverrun. Ser Jorah, the rumors say that there is a special enmity between Ser Lionel and House Coldbrook. If someone from your house were to spend an hour or two questioning the locals about rumors concerning Ser Lionel, then that would probably not raise too many suspicions."

Your uncle speaks wisely, Lord Dunstan. We should not let our own notions of honor blind ourselves to the nature of the foe we face, or prevent us from doing the expedient thing to secure the lives of your men and the girl."

Ben can do little but nod at the decisions and tactics of elders. Their words are wise. "
If we need calvary, do the Coldbrooks not have a elite unit? Ser Jorah I do believe your House is looking to make friends?"

Agreed. I will go and seek out Brandon Hill, he is most likely in the Inn, hopefully not too drunk yet. I will seek out Ser Matther and Bryce afterwards. Ser Jorah, can we count on your cavalry?"

"
With your leave, my lord, I shall go seek out the Tullys"
Theomore adds, happy that some sense could be talked into his nephew. "
It would be rather tactless to venture forth as we plan without bringing the why of it to his attention, and these are his lands, none would know them better than his own men."
And offer an opportunity to even out a certain score, that too.

"
I am against us taking this matter to Lord Tully. They would likely send their units there and the fanatics will kill Marei upon seeing them."
Dunstan said.
"
And besides, I do not want to disturb them, it is late and we need to meet the outlaws early on the morrow. Surely Brandon's archers and our very own man at arms will be enough. We can bring Lord Tully the outlaws in chains tomorrow, as a gift."

Re: [D6, Early night] What's in the box?
"
Oh, I imagine that he will be quite pleased with what we are proposing, a force not his own is placed at risk."
And predominantly black, that too. "
And I would most certainly be displeased were I to sit in the high seat of Riverrun to learn that one of his lords bannermen assembled a fighting force to execute justice in my domain without his approval."
"
Should we proceed without first seeking his consent, we make him appear weak, and that is quite inadvisable."
Especially since the man most certainly is weak. "
It is his responsibility, and right, to uphold the king's peace. The consequences of failing to be granted approval beforehand are best avoided."

Re: [D6, Early night] What's in the box?
Dunstan sighted, unhappy with the complications this event proved to have a plenty. All he wanted was to ride out and smash the brigands bloody. However, uncle was wise as always, but there had to be another way..
"
Ah, you are right uncle. Lord Tully could very well take our actions against us if we ride out without him knowing. Are you wiling to talk to him on the morrow? Mayheaps after we ride out? One Ser Derrock Swan would likely want to come in your stead, he is a knight of good reputation and fierce with a lance. You could stay and make sure Lord Gorman doesn't treat our expedition like an insult to his own right to maintain king's peace."
Dunstan thought for a while
"
I''d rather us do this quietly and rescue the girl than send an army to subdue the rebels. For our people's sake. And if you stay with him, he could see this as good for him even, with a few silver words.."

Re: [D6, Early night] What's in the box?
The boy may yet grow up to be a schemer, easier with forgiveness than permission indeed, but alas. "
He will not like that."
"
Though I am quite confident that he will give his blessing to our plan if it is presented to him with the right choice of words."

Some of the elite cavalry are here, but not all. Septon Arlyn, Guardsman Loreia and I did take the opportunity to speak to Holy Harry earlier, though not with the mind for a situation such as this."

Re: [D6, Early night] What's in the box?
Dunstan tried his best to subdue the anger and thin clearly, knowing good well that accepting or dismissing any advice the older knights are providing him with could very well mean life or death to the girl.
"
Very well uncle. Go and talk with our Liege Lords, and hopefully they will let us settle this on our own."

Ben puts his hand on Dunstan's shoulder. "
I feel your burning My Lord, but you have done well to to heed the wise advice of others. Theomore only seeks to save you further problems."
He clinches his fist. "
Sam will be avenged and your lady saved."

Re: [D6, Early night] What's in the box?
Jon watches silently as the others do their best to cheer Dunstan up. "
You are fortunate in your choice of comrades, Lord Dunstan, and they are right;
keep a cool head, and do not abandon hope, but all the same - I advise you to steel yourself for the worst. Any man capable of cutting the head off a prisoner and defile it so, just to send a message, is a man capable of any depravity. I should know, I have served with quite a few of them in my day,"
Jon says in a grim tone.
"
There is one more thing we need to do before riding out. We must learn all we can about the terrain around Harren's Justice, so that we can avoid any ambushes and, ideally, allow our reserve force to approach unseen. I shall pay a visit to Riverton and see if there are any local hunters or scouts that would be willing to talk, or even to guide us there."
OOC: Have we abandoned the idea of recruiting Loreia and/or Dyana to assist in this mission?
