D6 LM Sparring with Ser Benedict

[Ser Jorah Holt]

Fresh from meeting with Ser Rickard, Ser Jorah went over to the Tullison pavilion to meet with Ser Benedict. He believed he would still be there, not at the Marsten encampment with his bethrothed. Everything he had heard about Lady Isobel told him that would not be allowed until the marriage.

"
I am Ser Jorah Holt of House Coldbrook,"
he announced to the guards, "
I am hear to see Ser Benedict Blackthorne."

A hefty young page nods to Ser Jorah. "
I'll go an fetch em, ser."
He waddles off into the tents.

He returns shortly a bit out od breath with Ben in tow. He wears a big smile with a slight hop in his gait.

Ben bows to Ser Jorah. "
Good morning, Ser. Looks to be a fine day!"

You look in an excellent mood,"
Jorah returned the bow, "
it looks like being engaged agrees with you. Shall we begin?"

[Benedict Marsten]

Bens smile grows even more and he colors a bit in embarrassment. "
You have no idea Ser Jorah. Of course lets begin. If your sword work is as good as your jousting I have much to learn from you."
He steps back brushing his hand along his cheek. "
But may I ask you not to damage my bread winner."
He proceeds to laugh at his own jest.

I'll do my best, your wife to be has multiple houses she can send after my head if I did."
Jorah smiled as they stopped near some training dummies. He tested a few training swords before deciding on one.

"
Shall we see how good you are?"

Ben follows a similar process finding a sword. "
Certainly where would you like to start?"

"
Gently spar for a few moments. I have never seen you fight, so I don't know your style."

Ben nods moving in to probe for and opening. Meeting each of Jorahs thrust with a parry and snaking his sword into Jorahs very few openings.

My sparring earlier must have taken more out of me than I thought,"
he mused, as Ser Benedict batted his efforts aside.

Most of the people you fight I find will have a basic technique and they can normally be picked apart fairly easily to men of our skill, but I've come across a few"
He took a step forward, drawing out his dagger.

Have you tried the Obertan technique? It’s a dornish technique my father picked up when he met my mother. If you twist the blade like this when they parry with their blade, it might leave an opening if they are not careful, which leaves them open to a swift counter attack, either from a slash with your blade for lightly armoured opponents or a quick jab with a dagger for the more heavily armoured to slip into the gap under the arm."

Ben draws out his dagger and tries to copy Jorah's steps. Falling short the first few times. Then with Jorah's able guidance it clicks.

Ben steps back nodding at the effectiveness of such a technique. "
Certainly that has it place, Ser. I appreciate you sharing your secrets with me."

You are welcome Ser Benedict or is that soon to be Lord Marsten,"
Jorah smiled at him, "
I have a few more if you are interested, though they function better when you are just using a sword. A shield tends to get in the way."

Ben smiles shaking his head. "
Keeping something low key around here is impossible."
He gives Jorah a eager smile. "
A warriors training nevery stops. I will learn as much as you are willing to teach,Ser "

Well, it was mentioned at Yoren Longshore's .... speech last night. I imagine the rumour mill might be running wild soon enough on the matter."

Before we continue, as you are about to become a Lord, I was wondering if I may ask your opinion on matter? You may be aware of House Coldbrook's current dilemma regarding whom should replace the fallen son Joren."
Jorah held his head low for a few seconds with the pain of that memory before continuing.

On one hand, we have Garret Snow, strong in the arm and has the respect of the men as a leader.
On the other hand, we have Daveth, learned man and self taught on a variety of subjects, who I think will have been noticed by many having driven forward our attempts to gain formal control over Castle Grenward.

Both men have their strengths and their flaws, but which one would you be able to see in the Lord's seat at Castle Grenward?"

Ben looks mildly surprised. "
I guess I may have to get used to people asking my opinion."
He takes a moment in thought.

I have not met Garret, but Daveth impressed me much. A great warrior does not always translate to a great Lord. It is hard for a soldier to understand the ways of peace. Are they amiable?"


Ben chuckles. "
When I met Daveth I told him if I were ever head of a house he would be the type of man I desired to help me run it. Had I known now..."


He shakes his head, looking down at his sword in thought. "
Without meeting Garrett, I would say Daveth, but that would be unwise counsel to dismiss a man without knowing him."

They act as true brothers should,"
Jorah replied, smiling, "
for the good and the bad of that. They are good for each other. Maybe you should meet with Garret, get the feel for him."

But back to why we are here. Here is the Reynolds manoeuvre. You disguise your intent by placing your blade just behind your back, giving them what they think is an opportunity. If you hold it just so, your blade can be brought to bear if they don’t fall for it, but if they do, you spin on your back foot, moving you to the side and enabling you to attack your opponent’s flank, where generally you can find more gaps.

Incidentally, this was named after a ship’s captain killed in a duel over a Courtesean, or so I am told. Apparently, he thought he was doing well."

Ben laughs at Jorah's explanation of the naming, as he attempts the stance and steps through the maneuver. The spin a bit tricky at first, but once the past the disorientation, it becomes clear it is a very valuable tactic leaving slow opponents exposed.

Breathing a bit heavily after repeating the maneuver numerous times he says to Jorah. "
I would gladly meet Garret. Perhaps you could arrange it?"

He's bedridden at the moment, so it won't be much of a meeting."

Moving back into position and setting up the opening. "
Perhaps between Daveth and yourself I could get a good idea of who Garret is."
Letting Jorah's step into the opening he spins on his back foot. "
Maybe we could meet again at that damnedable library?"
He squeezes his small fingers tightly to bring his sword to a stop just short of hitting Jorah's back.

Did you manage to find what you were looking for?"

[Benedict Marsten]

"
Gods no. That place is immense. If not for my sister and Daveth I would not have gotten anywhere."
He turns the practice blade over in his hands.

"
But you can not let adversity stand in the way of bettering yourself. I will eventually locate that book. And you? I believe you were looking for something the day we met."
His mind trails off to Corrine on that day, and how she had grown. He gives a small chuckle.

Indeed it is. I haven't been successful in finding everything I am after either. Luckily I have enlisted some aid on that matter. The scribe Pate might help you if you catch him at the right moment. Daveth and Septon Arlyn are meeting me later in the library."
He tapped Ben's sword with his own, "
I'm surprised you remember. As I recall, you were a little distracted that day."

Ben jumps a bit at the tap to his sword. "
Yes and it appears I continue to be distracted. Was I so obvious?"
He smiles and laughs.

"
Pate you say. Perhaps Ellie can talk him into assisting me, she is very good at making friends. Septon Arlyn? He's obviously not from Castle Grenward."
He has a puzzled look, knowing the Coldbrooks are Northerners.

Looking back, I would say yes, but then it has been an eventful last few days. Certainly, I am no expert on the matters, so it is obvious in hindsight. Are you ready for this?"


"
No, but don't look so sceptical. I am from Castle Grenward as well. He's from House Dulver's lands, but imagine the complete opposite of everything you have ever heard of Lord Harold Dulver and that is Septon Arlyn."

[Benedict Marsten]

This? You mean more training or being Lord Protector"
He raises an eyebrow questioningly.

"
Ah, so the septon is large and generous."
He smiles at his jest.

"
Being Lord Protector;
this is easy in comparison. I doubt you will get much of a quiet period, especially with the campaign against the clans to plan."

Indeed he is, though he does still want your money and as somebody who is soon to be a lord, I'm sure he will be asking you.
