Round 1
Initiative: 4

Looking around the field to see who's still standing, Jon finds himself with the Knight of Stones to his right, Florian Greysteel to his left, and across from him, Baelon Waters, Medrick Manderly, Henry Marbrand and Arryn Vance.

Gods, I'm tired already, and - just my luck - stuck between a mystery knight looking to make his mark and a man I narrowly avoided losing to once already. The rest of them? Medrick went far in the joust and Baelon knows his way around a sword, so Vance or Marbrand - those are my next targets.

Jon must be even more tired than he thought, because he's slow to react when the Knight of Stones suddenly turns and launches his assault. The speed and power of the knight's sword thrust drives his blade straight through Jon's brigandine, but with a herculean effort he manages to turn slightly to the left at the last moment, so that the sword scrapes along his ribs instead of punching into his gut.

Seven hells, the bastard hits like a fucking sledgehammer!

Recovering his footing, Jon swiftly counterattacks with all the ferocity of a wounded boar. He surges forward, smashing his shield into the knight's with enough force to send him tumbling to the ground, and follows up with a vicious overhand swing with his mace. The Knight of Stones manages to interpose his shield, but the force of Jon's blow cracks it and pushes it down onto the knight, obscuring his sight. The Knight rolls away to avoid further attacks.

How did you like that, you smug bastard? Jon thinks exultantly. You're not the only one that packs a punch! But the triumphant feeling soon leaves him, as he begins to feel the blood trickling inside his gambeson.

[OOC: [url=Per the house rules][/url], fatigue and DP cannot grant extra attacks, just extra non-attack actions. EDIT: just noticed that wasn't quite the issue. Regardless, characters are restricted to one attack (excepting divided attacks) per round. Ser Medrick can only have made one of those two attacks.]

My actions in this round have sparked controversy. Baelon feels that Dyana should have gotten a free attack on me for moving away from her. I disagree.

The root cause of the disagreement is that Reader has not clearly defined the limits of his free attacks house rule. A discussion has been started in the [url=Mechanical Discussion thread][/url], but what is needed is an answer from Reader. I have PM:ed him to ask him to provide us with an answer, so hopefully we'll get one soon.

Since Dyana is next up to act, it would probably be best if you do nothing until we have a response from Reader, since what he says may lead me to change my actions to a greater or lesser degree. Very sorry for causing this thread to be delayed still further. Sad

Knight of Stones

That felt like it str-

Battle is not a time to linger on thoughts for too long. The mind wanes, and the brain stops calculating minutiae and concentrating on opinions and trivia. Instinct takes over, and suddenly, you're a crazed collection of muscles and steel, moving to the much-rehearsed song of survival. You strike, you retreat, you sweat and smell your enemy's sweat, their breath of ale when fighting sober didn't seem an encouraging prospect. You grunt, groan and scream your fury.

Except Dyana, in her guise, couldn't scream. To keep her identity secret, she had to cling to that bit of restraint, and not give herself up to the primal impulse of combat, holding back her reactions to each blow - given or taken. And what a blow she took.

The Knight of Stones is sent reeling to the ground, his shield significantly caved in with the dreadful force of the Wrecker's impact. Wrecker indeed. His forearm throbes, and some part of him is aware that even if the bone is whole beneath, the bruise will not last less than a month. Still, he falls silently. The pain could be incredible, but the rush and thrill of battle begins to take over, and it's a familiar feeling. And as much as a honorable person like him would be hard pressed to admit it, drawing blood brings an undeniable and unique joy.

The blow Ser Jon gave him was, surely, the desperate counter of someone losing blood.

The mystery knight lands awkwardly on his side, and again the Wrecker's mace comes for him. He rolls to the side quickly, in a pained but successful effort to avoid the attack, and Jon collects himself instead of giving chase just yet. The Knight chooses to do the same, and wastes no time jumping to his feet and gathering to a more defensive stance, his eyes wary on the nearby opponents.


Taking 1 Injury to lower the damage taken by 4, making it 8.
Greater Action: Stand up.

Edit: Never mind, misread the whole thing.

Edit the second: I must be really tired, but it does seem there's something wonky with your actions after all.

As I understand your post, you attempted to stand up as a Lesser Action, but failed. You then stood up automatically using a Greater Action instead. However, failing the test doesn't void the action - you still used a Lesser Action, so you only had a second Lesser Action left. The way to get around this is to spend Fatigue to get an extra Lesser Action for your attempted Agility test.

[OOC: I find it odd that, facing two enemies and having failed to eliminate Ser Henry, Ser Medrick did not activate his Anointed quality. It's a free action, so he could have done it. It would have raised his CD by 5 for one round (up to 15), greatly affecting the results of the two attacks against him. If you don't want to retcon it, he should DEFINITELY use it on his next turn]

Jon calls out to the mystery knight.

Having spoken his piece, Jon sets off at speed to put some distance between himself and the rest of the warriors on the field.

[OOC: Always doing some sort of mistake, am I not? I had no idea the failed test negated the action. In retrospect, I suppose it makes sense, but I thought it a free attempt. Had I known, with my odds being sort of low, I would not test Agility. If I cannot retcon it, then assume I spent a fatigue, and am now in sort of a bad shape.]

OOC: Happens to everyone, don't worry about it. From a competitive standpoint, it would be great to have you weakened further, but from any other angle, insisting on you keeping your actions as written would be very unsporting. So as far as I'm concerned - I can't speak for Baelon or Arlyn, of course - go ahead and retcon!

Also, have you considered updating your signature? Dyana isn't "
good with a sword"

Ser Jon's appeal to honor gives the mystery knight pause when he seems to get his footing again, and his head turns towards the nearby combatants, considering the situation. Just then, however, Ser Henry falls and lays defeated, and Sers Medrick and Florian both close in to a duel. Ser Arryn and Baelon circle each other, searching for openings.

It seems the only two fighters currently idle are himself and the Wrecker.

A worthy and eager foe, the knight forfeits trying to catch his own breath when he robs Ser Jon of the opportunity. Surely, with the way the battle has developed, his opponent would understand. The silent warrior dashes across the battlefield, the metal of his armature clanging as he takes a wide turn around Ser Florian, feints and then lunges low against the Wrecker a second time - though his shield is held closer to the ribs this time. A mace is more dangerous there than parrying at his arm.

OOC: Discussion with Reader via PM has led me to interpret the house rule about not using fatigue or DP for extra attacks as forbidding us from ever spending them on attack actions, i.e. the extra Lesser Action gained can never be an attack action.

I've PM:ed Dyana about this to discuss options for handling our duel, which may include retconning one or both our actions. Since this fight is now strictly one-on-one, such a discussion should have no effect on any other participants.

[OOC: In this case it is not an issue. Dyana can spend the fatigue first;
that gives her 3 lesser actions. Combine two (the fatigue-granted one and one of the normal ones) into a greater action. Ta-da, one greater action and one attack, without using fatigue for the attack. Page 162 states: "
You have two Lesser Actions, or you may combine them for one Greater Action."
Thus the lesser action from the fatigue does not need to be used specifically for the attack. Where it would matter more is when multiple rolls are being made in the round, say move, knockdown, and attack. Then the fatigue would end up applying to the knockdown and the attack rather than just the attack. In this case though it works out exactly the same, so no retcon is necessary.]

OOC: IMO, you're reading way too much into a single line that is repeated nowhere else, and even by itself doesn't imply that what you're suggesting is possible. There is no "
combining"
Lesser Actions actually going on in combat - you just choose to take a Greater Action or two Lesser Actions on your turn.

Also, since this entire discussion stems from a house rule, using an excessively legalistic reading of the standard rules is no basis for determining how the house rule works. If we were using the standard rules, there would be no question that Dyana's action is in accordance with the rules, and there would be no need to even try and read the standard rules in the way you just did (i.e. a seriously overcomplicated one).

That's all from me. I'll await Dyana's response.

[OOC: Septon, just a reiteration of Jon's earlier points that the current dispute does not need to be resolved before the rest of the melee can move on.
Ser Arryn, Ser Florian, and myself can take our actions in the meantime, assuming neither of them decide to leave their current fight and go after Jon or the KoS.
Hopefully the current issue will have been resolved by the time Jon's action comes back around.]
