[D3, MM] Gwyn's Visit (Closed)

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

Corrine was breaking her fast in the common room of the Green Door Inn, quiet and tired from a rough night. She was nibbling unenthusiastically on her food when she heard the door of the inn open. She glanced up to see who it was.

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

A woman who's hair fell out of the hood of her cloak in dark ringlets, obscuring her eyes from Corrine's angle entered the inn and briefly paused near the innkeeper before selecting a table and sitting down. An event so unremarkable as to occasion no comment nor second glance from the young Lady Marsten, though something about the woman's gait caught her eye. And her attention lingering, Corrine saw when the other woman lowered her hood that the eyes behind that hair were very familiar indeed.

At the same moment Corrine realized, the woman caught sight of her as well and marked the recognition dawning on her face.

Quickly Gwyn put a finger across her lips and hurried over to Corrine's table.

"
Shush,"
she urged with a giggle. "
Damn your archer's eyes. I completely forgot you were staying here as well."

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

"
Why are you in that disguise?"
Corrine whispers, incredulously.

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

"
Well so I won't be recognized of course,"
is Gwyn's mischievous response. "
And I'd have gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for my meddling cousin."


When she sees Corrine won't be deterred by a joke she relents and adds, "
I've been keeping an eye on the innkeeper, and who she deals with. Her political connections run a bit on the grassy side of the fence, if you get my meaning."
Gwyn leans back in her chair a little and wags a finger at Corrine. "
You ought to be careful. It's virtually certain you're under observation here most of the time."

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

"
Good heavens! Really?"


Corrine still whispers, though her eyes grow wider at Gwyn's words. "
Is there danger? Should I tell Ben and Kevan?"

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

And then an idea occurred to Gwyn. So simple an idea that she was rather astonished it hadn't occurred to her before.

She leaned back closer and said quietly, "
Probably not. It's their nature to confront directly, trying to overcome by force. That's not a bad thing, but it's not the appropriate response here. Rely on subtler eyes. Simply bear in mind that what you say and do here is marked, and make use of that. And...perhaps we can be of assistance to one another. It's much harder for me to come here and do this after all. Every so often I have to leave and change things and come back, or it's obvious...and...it's just keeping me away from other things. Is there anyone you can trust to see who the innkeeper associates with?"

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

"
Sam Manderly is due to arrive today or tomorrow. He is sworn to be my eyes and ears in the shadows, so to speak. I'll put him to the task,"
Corrine whispers back. "
Do you know what sort of things the innkeeper is looking for? Which side are they on?"

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

"
As I understand it, she's very big in green circles,"
Gwyn relates. "
At least, as much as a backwoods inn like this can be. Messages passed, and so forth. Identifying who she does business with could open up any number of opportunities."


She considers. "
Sam Manderley, hm? Interesting choice. When do I get to meet him?"

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

[ooc: You'll have met him before. He was living at Hartshorn for 4 years before he went to Essos, a few months before the Riverrun tourney.]

"
After he turns up, I expect,"
Corrine answers. "
He had some loose ends to tie up, so he couldn't come with us right away. Perhaps for the best. Keeping his connection with me quiet would likely be wise."

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

She nods.

"
That's actually perfect. I think I remember him now that you mention it... But it would be good if you and he and I had a more planned get-together once he's here. There are a lot of loose lips around here. Not every piece of evidence is one you'll find running around waving a royal writ."


At that, Gwyn grins.

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

"
True, though we should not meet here. Do you know somewhere secure?"

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

"
Come to Baelon and my tent?"
Gwyn suggests. "
We're cousins, so it wouldn't seem so strange. And there's enough servants about for your man to blend in with easily enough."

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

"
Excellent. I will do that. We will be travelling around anyway, so we'll find a suitable time to stop by. I'm glad you spoke with me, Gwyn. This whole thing is getting more difficult and tense all the time. I don't think I've been this stressed and afraid since labour!"
she jests, to disguise her genuine worries about her ability to cope with the task at hand.

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

"
I can imagine,"
Gwyn says with real sympathy. "
They hung all this on you two, but you don't have to do it alone. You're right, we shouldn't talk too much here, but you know you can always rely on me if you need help, or just want to talk."


She reached across the table to give Corrine's hand a squeeze, just a quick one.

"
I'm sure you know by now that almost nothing here is as it seems. Is there anything else troubling you besides the quest for truth?"

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

Corrine returns the hand squeeze gratefully.

"
Apart from being homesick already, nothing else,"
Corrine shrugs. "
The search for truth is more than enough to be getting on with. As you say, nothing is simple or transparent in this."

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

"
Mmm, and worst of all, that means neither you nor Ben can afford to be either of those things as well,"
Gwyn sympathized.

"
Send me a message when you're ready to meet, and I'll arrange a place. As I think of it more, Baelon and my accommodations might not work after all...unless of course you choose that day for some trip to interview the Brackens. Which wouldn't be a bad idea at all."

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

"
Well, I am going to speak with some of the Brackens later..."

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

"
Well, there we have it. Simply delay that visit until Manderly arrives, then take him with you as an attendant or some such on your trip. And see me on your way out."


Gwyn beams at Corrine. With dark hair, they look eerily similar, more like sisters than cousins.

"
Does that sound workable?"

[Lady Corrine Marsten]

"
It does,"
Corrine nods. "
We will talk more then. Perhaps we will learn useful new things to share inthe intervening time."

[Gwyneth Drakeson]

"
I have no doubt of it."
Gwyn smiles, then briskly adds, "
And on that note, I should take my leave. I shall leave the investigations here in your capable hands. Until we meet again?"


She gets up from her seat.

Take care, Gwyn,"
Corrine replies with an affectionate smile.
