D6 MM - Three Knights and some answers (closedish)

[Ser Jorah Holt]

Ser Jorah waited at the agreed meeting point showing Trelane a few riding techniques as they waited for two men to arrive;
Ser Kevan Lyras and Ser Symon Blackwood

As part of the remit of the Royal Investigators, Ser Symon Blackwood had been asked to meet with them and explain a few matters.

Ser Kevan arrived, seeing Ser Jorah drilling his squire at riding techniques. "
Ser Jorah, master Trelane. Nice too meet you. I see, my friend is not wasting any time to drill you. I don't think you coukd have found a better teacher, Trelane, but if you ever need any help in your jousting techniques, do not hesitate to send a message. Might be one of the few areas, where I can defeat your master"
, the last remark was followed by a wink to Ser Jorah.

Indeed, of course, Ser Kevan is an expert in staying in his saddle by the skin of his teeth,"
Ser Jorah winked back

Ser Symon Blackwood approached his fellow knights with what appeared to be polite confidence, but both the royal investigators were experienced enough to detect caution in his step and body language. He walked his horse in the morning rain rather than trusting his horsemanship in the spring showers. This was not a knight to defeat the likes of Ser Tyron Blackwood or Lord Haigh Bracken.

Sers, I trust I arrived in good time to aid those beneath the King's banner. I am far removed from decisions by both distance and rank, but will do all I can to aid you."

Welcome Ser Symon, thank you for coming so promptly. Not to worry, I am sure that you will be of great help to our investigation. The first thing we need is an escorted tour to the borderlands here. I understand you know them well on both sides of the border."
Ser Jorah looked at him, a wry smile on his face.

Ser Symon led Ser Kevan and Ser Jorah across both sides of the border, after some brief bluster about being pushed across the border by Brackens who were drawing other houses in to the conflict.

A guilty conscience seemed to betray itself at points, Ser Symon stumbling and mentioning coordination and orders from above in several places. No direct admission, but the movements across the border seemed no accident, nor solely Ser Symon's work.

Ser Jorah led them to one of the redoubts set up on the Darry border

So if you were not the one responsible for these, who was in command and arranged this? And whom was the Bracken commander who attacked and did the damage?"

Much and more is learned that day, weight of evidence and reputation finally weighing on Ser Symon to win answers from him.

Ser Tyron Blackwood appears to have had some role in using Darry lands to raid House Bracken, a deliberate ploy on his part. Ser Symon lacks the organisational abilities to pull off such an attack.

Ser Wyll Bracken was responsible for chasing the Blackwood's back on to Darry lands, but Ser Jorah and Ser Kevan's knowledge of warfare is sufficient to judge that his pursuit was not overzealous, albeit politics may drive a different judgement. Warfare is chaotic afterall...

So who caused all the damage to House Darry lands?"
he demanded from Ser Symon.

We did camp there and raid from across the order, provoking House Bracken to pursue."


"
My blood and eyes say Bracken did the damage unto Lord Darry's land, but my honour as a knight compels me to say the Father would judge House Blackwood responsible. I'd have done the same in their place, Ser Wyll Bracken seems no more wicked than a typical Bracken, I'll not dishonour himself by accusing him anything beyond the Blackwoods he has slain in combat."


"
I'll say as much before the tribunal, but fear my voice would betray me. Would you give me the courtesy of presenting my words in ink rather than in person?"

[Ser Jorah Holt]

"
I would accept such a letter."
Jorah nodded his agreement, glancing at Ser Kevan.

[Kevan Lyras]

"
Yes, a letter would be acceptable, Ser. Thank you for your cooperation, this makes our work a lot easier indeed."

Looking over at Ser Jorah he added: "
Maybe we should pay a visit to Ser Wyll as well?"

[Ser Jorah Holt]

"
I think that would be best. I was about to head to the Septry, but we can meet up at the Warrior's Seat later."

Ok, then let us do that. So, how is the education of our young squire going along?"
, the comment was followed by a quick smile at the young man riding with them.

Slowly, but then this has hardly been a week for training a new squire. So far, I've been taking his measure and deciding what to train him in. Certainly, his training before becoming my squire has been a little interesting."
He looked back at Trelane as well, before looking around at the redoubt.

What do you make of what Ser Tyron was trying to achieve with this?"

[Kevan Lyras]

Not entirely sure, there are two possibilities coming to mind. Number one"
, holding up one finger, "
it was purely a tactical decision as he hoped to catch the enemy by surprise by expanding the battlefield and introducing another direction of attack. Or, number two"
, second finger goes up, "
he purposely attacked from there, hoping to draw House Darry into this whole mess..."

[Ser Jorah Holt]

A third option is that he was trying to hide his actions from his Lord whom had not given him any permission to do such a thing. As much as we may not like it, sometimes a subordinate will do something in secret behind his commander's back. How would you handle his actions if you were his commander?"

[Kevan Lyras]

"
True, but this could be the case with both potential motivations. No easy question. A man doing what he believes to be in the interest of his liege, although without his consent...? It is important to let him know that it is not his role to decide such things and that this is not acceptable, while at the same time ensuring that the men are not discouraged by punishing someone too severely for what he believed to be right... The exact punishment would would directly depend on the severity. What do you think?"

The severity of disobeying or the severity of the consequences of their actions?"
Jorah liked to pose questions to those he taught. Better than they learn with guidance than be spoon fed the answers.

You obviously have to account for both. Disobeying your commander needs to be disciplined but it obviously also makes a difference if you killed somebody or destroyed property"
