Rumours at the town. Empty Rumours at the town.

Post by Yoren longshore Wed Jun 29, 2016 10:44 pm

The small town has, at least on the face of it, bounced back from the problems they faced quite recently. Each day more and more people come to seek their fortune through their trade, and though many still live under poor conditions, this only helps the carpenters, who works harder than anybody else. All but running they are desperately trying to cover all the immigrants housing needs, and though they are unable to do so, they make a valiant attempt. Although many are still tight lipped, as only war can make you become, many still yearns to have someone to talk to about all that has happened.

“Now, being a maester, the idea is to learn. Now, much of that can be from books, scrolls and other maesters. However, sometimes, the only way to learn is from other people and the trick is to know whom the best people to talk to are.” He explained as he mingled with the people of Market Town, trying to learn what he could.

Daeryssa had a warm smile for everyone she met in the town, and was at her most friendly. These people had fallen on hard times, and if she could bring just a little cheer to them she'd be happy.
She nodded to Maester Brant. "
I do like to read... but stories are my favorite"
she admitted. If only books weren't so expensive. "
I bet you've read all sorts of histories and legends and tales."

Apart from a few lewd looks and comments, the townsfolk does not seem to take much interest in the queries. However, Brants reflected questions, aided by Daeryssas endearing nature lures some of the washing women to talk a little too openly. Once they start talking, it is hard to make the flow of words stop, and they soon bring up the subject that is on everyones mind;
The bar brawl and the fire that followed. They lament over how the dim-wit had ripped the popular Martins arm out of it's socket, and it is sad that he will now have to start begging for his meals, as he has no family to provide for him.
You hear of how Rud (Ammets father) has been gone on a hunting trip, and the washerwomen seem unsure what will happen when he returns with his black temper. He and his brothers have beaten up those who have recently arrived without any cause, and the washing women seem both exited and scared at what will happen when they return. Some think that he'll kill both Martin and his comrades when he returns, but one says in a knowing fasion that he will show some restraint, to keep the knights eyes away from his business around town. The other women shushes her at that, and they are unwilling to talk more about that subject, quickly turning to the bread and butter of any good rumour monger: starting rumours of which not present woman is having an affair.
Apart from the washerwomen the town seems to be exeedingly niggardly in giving out the information the Maester and Daeryssa seeks.

Daeryssa blushes at the talk of affairs and the lewd comments. But she eagerly chatters with the washerwomen, enjoying the chance to meet new people. "
Oh dear, I'm sorry about Martin. He should get better eventually if he's careful"
Daeryssa did feel sorry for the man, even if he had started the whole fight.
She smiles at the washerwomen before they leave "
It was nice to meet you! Perhaps we can speak again later"

"
Thank the Seven you were there at the fight, Maester Brant. If Ammet had died, there would have been a lot of fighting for certain"
she said gratefully to the Maester once they leave the company of the washerwomen.
"
This is trouble. Now Ammet and Martin both could be in danger of further attack... and we have even more to look in to. What could Rud be doing that he doesn't want knights to know about?"
Daerrysa muses She smiles up at her father "
Whatever it is, a knight is about to find out"
she adds quietly, in case anyone is listening in.
She sighs. "
I don't understand this fighting for no reason. Especially when things are so rough already! It's not valiant and it's not impressive."

“Many many books and scrolls, though many of them were not as learned as the writers believed they were. House Blackwood’s library is obviously not as impressive as the Citadel, but it does have a few fine volumes. Depending on what you are interested in, I could recommend a few to read.”

He thanked the washer woman, complimenting them before they left.

“Washer woman are always a font of information. I have not met one who is not a complete gossip."
Brant smiled, "
however, whatever this Rud is up to, it seems to be outside of what the Royal Investigators were looking into, perhaps somebody taking advantage of the situation. I think he should be the focus of our next enquiries."

Ser Devyn had kept his distance, talking with some of the men folk on minor matters, so that his presence would not keep people from opening up to Daeryssa, but seeing her moving away, he slowly approached.

"
How did it go?"
he asked her.

"
That would be very kind of you, Maester"
Daeryss said respectfully. "
I've always been fond of the tales of the great knights."
she admitted. She did not want Maester Brant to think of her as a child, but it was true. "
Histories can be interesting as well."

She smiled at her father when he approached. "
Well, at first people were not very talkative."
Daeryssa admitted. She was a little disappointing that she had not been able to get them to open up to her. "
But the washerwomen were very friendly. It's so nice to make new friends"

Once Daeryssa begins talking about it, she begins to talk quickly. "
They were upset that Martin had been hurt, he doesn't have anyone to take care of him. And Ammet's father Rud will be returning soon from hunting, and he had a violent temper! So we have another thing to worry about. The girls think he'll try to kill Martin and his friends."
She sounded worried. Now there were several people to protected and mysteries to worry about. "
It's a very good thing we arrived when we did."
She regarded her father with trusting eyes. Of course he would take care of it. Daeryssa was sure there was almost nothing he and her brothers couldn't do.
Her voice drops to a whisper "
And they hinted that Rud was doing something that he didn't want knights to know about. Maester Brant thinks we should look in to it, and I agree. But I don't know where to start."

"
I was just remarking to Maester Brant how unfortunate it is to have so many people fighting at the inn for no reason."
She blushed as she recalled the washerwoman's favorite topic "
And heavens, apparently some of the married people here... I mean, heavens! After they took vows before a septon and everything! I don't know what's going on."

Daeryssa nodded. Her father could always remain so calm in these situations, she wished she could do the same. Still, he reassured her, and she stopped her rapid-fire chatter. "
Right, of course we will! Where to now? And perhaps we can get one of Patience's people to watch Martin... although, I don't know that they would be the right choice... they seem rather rough."

"
That's true. Crossing wits with a witch would be a challenge for anyone! I've never met a real witch, one who could do magic."
Daeryssa said, wonder in her voice at the thought of magic. She looked curiously over at Maester Brant. Masesters knew all kinds of mysteries, maybe he knew more about it.

Brant raised an eyebrow when the young lady mentioned magic.

"
There are a multitude of texts and scrolls regarding magic and many have devoted themselves to learning about it. However, I have seen no evidence of anything that actually equates to magic. In the past perhaps, especially with edifices like the Wall, but nowadays, it is a lost art, like the Dragons."

A scrawny man of indeterminate age runs up to the three. A bit red-faced and sweating, he has apparently been running.

Taking a deep breath, he says with a somewhat ragged voice:
"
Pard'n me m'lords an' m'lady. Maester, Patience 'as need o' yer learnin' at the witch's 'ouse. She said somethin' 'bout figgerin' out wha' the witch was brewin'. Can ya come wit' me, please?"

Daeryssa nodded, momentarily embarrassed by her flight of fancy compared to the maester's more resonable view. "
Oh, I see. That's tragic, that is is gone from the world."
At least until Brant was asked to see what the witch was brewing. He does know more about magic than he lets on.
"
Thank you for carrying the message, goodman."
she said to the runner. Patience inspires a lot of effort in these men.

Daeryssa shifts her father's shield over her shoulders. "
Off to go speak to Martin, then?"

Brant looked at the ruddy faced man and sighed.

"
There is no such thing as magic, but it might be something more mundane and still deadly."
He motioned for the man to lead him to the 'Witch's hut'.

Martin held a small cottage in his possession, and although it was humble, it was both tidy and well kept. As you approach Martin is eating at a table set outside of his home, his arm still tied close to his body by the well done ministrations by maester Brant. As it becomes obvious that you are headed for his home he looks up and asks roughly: "
What do you want here?"

Talk was cheap, especially among the small folk. But every once in a while you could harvest a stag from a dalliance of the mayor or reuniting child with father. not as much as you can find from the bodies of the dead mind you, but still will fill your belly in hard times.

Rudolph made his way around the small village, drawing water from the well for the washer women, as they have notoriously loose lips.

Unfortunately today the topics mostly revolved around the events of the day before, and the nearly lethal blow to local simpleton.

Rudolph had earlier that day seen the knight and the young lady walking around the town, and again he spots them as he walks past the house of Martin, a nice enough fellow who sometimes shared his supper, when he had gotten paid.

knights and Ladies always have a bit of coin. Prehaps if I follow 'em it will lead to good fortune. Either by the knight dying and me getting to sell his armor, or by proceeding assistance for their coin

Randolph follows behind, he has learned the art of following people without being noticed. A useful skill to have when your face is so memorable with his teeth stained red from the sour leaf.

gods be good if I can get some coin from them.

Mollified by the young woman talking to him so courteously he says: "
I remember you now."
He gestures to the roughly hewn wooden log directly opposite him and his table, that seemed to work as a bench: "
You can take a seat, what do you want me for?"
