Re: [D5 LM] Shopping for equipment (open)
OOC: Sorry, waiting for the Bath thread of mine to be resolved since it is heavily connected with what he''d say. I'm gonna continue without that info, and maybe add it later.
"
When I was in the Inn last night, I offered some silver for valuable information regarding Benjen Frey and the crime he might have commited. It was within the law to do so, since the investigation became mu duty not so long after the rumours started spreading. Anyway, I was there doing just that and he walked in and offered an entire golden dragon on incriminating information regarding me."
Dunstan says, displaying shock.
"
Do you know why would he do that? What have I done? Is it because I volunteered to fight him in the trial? It was not personal, but a thing of honor and piety."

Yoren takes Dunstan by the shoulder: "
don't let his gruff nature intimate you. I don't know why, but as a man who knows both him and you, it seems quite obvious. When you offer money for information, then there are always people that will give false information. I think Athelstan wanted to say that he believe that people will give their assistance willingly, and paying them will only be detrimental to the cause. If Frey now comes to be judged he may question the integrity of the witnesses, as you paid them to give information."
Yoren pats him on the back: "
I don't think it was meant maliciously at all, don't worry."

Jon threads his way through the crowds with a heavy gait, doing his best to avoid bumping into other market goers. Reaching the area where the horse traders have set up shop, he spots a shock of chestnut hair above the crowds.
"
Loreia, over here"
he calls out, waving his silver maul to attract her attention.

"
Jon!"
When a familiar voice call her name, the chestnut hair comes closer toward Jon until he and its traveling home are able to look each other in the eye.
"
You can lift that thing so high in the air, it's a wonder you need it to walk."
She grins at her own observation, but one raised eyebrow unmasks her suspicion.

When Loreia comes closer, she quickly notices that Jon looks bone-weary and moves quite stiffly. His pleasure at seeing her is obvious, however.
"
To be honest, most days I don't need it to walk, but today would be an exception - this damp air is playing havoc with my old wounds. Usually I just keep it with me to remind people who they're talking to!"
he laughs.
"
I'm sorry we haven't had the opportunity to see more of each other these past days. It was a pleasure talking and dancing with you. Perhaps when I'm feeling more...mobile...we could do so again?"

"
When you're feeling better,"
she soothes. "
Guess I met you on a good day for it, the other night. It was fun. I'd love to learn to do it decently, if you'll teach me."
She crinkles her nose at the smell of horse poop. "
And if you had a horse, I take it those wounds would give you less trouble? That what you're out here for today?"

Oh, I have a horse already - a fine rounsey that's carried me through thick and thin for quite a few years. But one thing she's not anymore, is tourney material. That became abundantly clear yesterday, when I had the pleasure of riding a courser that Ser Fendrel kindly lent me for the tourney. Fortunately, the jousting went well and I made a goodly sum off the ransoms, so now I have the coin to invest in a courser of my own. I remembered you saying that you know horses, so I thought you could help me find a decent one for what I'm willing to spend."

Sure, I'd be glad to help. Shall we?"
She has Jon walk with her to each candidate she takes notice, eyeing them up and putting her trade to use.

"
Aye, those ransoms,"
she comments. "
Personally, I don't hold with that whole 'I win, I get your stuff' thing. Should be the host handin' out parcels of gold for the small victories. Oh, in a perfect world..."

Jon listens carefully to Loreia's opinions, nodding in appreciation as she points out strengths and weaknesses he wouldn't have considered himself. He finally settles on a strong-looking black with white socks.
: 5d6 15 - assuming the same Difficulty and effects as Nathan appears to have faced, this should be enough to shift the coper to Amiable.
: 4d6 16 - assuming the same Difficulty that Nathan and Kevan appear to have faced (9), this is 2 DoS, resulting in a discount of 15% (Cunning x 5%, per GOT rules p. 146).
Speaking for a moment to the horse-dealer he turns on the charm, making certain that the trader knows that he'll be selling the horse to Wrecker Jon himself. It has the desired effect - the trader agrees to sell at a tidy discount.
"
Oh, what's the problem with ransoms? It saves the hosts some money, and it keeps people from entering who really can't afford to lose."

If not for ransoms, most times people wouldn't need to afford to lose."
A defensive edge finds its way onto Loreia's tongue. "
It's an expense a rich host ought to pay. A price to enter maybe, but lest he be a bettin' man, a man ought only have to pay with his pride - not in gold for his opponent's victory."

Do you know how much it costs to throw a tourney like this, Loreia? I'd wager Lord Tully is out at least a 1,000 Gold Dragons for the joust alone, and that's before accounting for any prizes the victor will receive. If he had to guarantee a prize sum to every knight that won a tilt as well, he'd be scraping the bottom of his treasury in no time. And don't think he could get away with just a small cash prize either;
ransoms are an old and established custom - any lord that wants knights of renown at his tourney would at least have to guarantee coin equivalent to an expected ransom to make it worth their while."
"
Besides, there are already ways to lessen the cost of losing. If a man wants to enter a tourney but can't afford to lose his horse and armor, he should find himself a backer to guarantee his ransom before putting his name in the book. All that costs him is a share of the winnings if he does well. Why all the grumbling about ransoms, Loreia? Were you thinking of entering yourself?"
Jon asks with a sly look.

"
No I wasn't, and if you were thinking of putting my name down, it's too late,"
She crosses her arms. "
Master Daveth entered, you know. I'm just glad the price of his defeat didn't come out of our house's pocket 'stead of his own."
"
Oh, hang your customs,"
she huffs. "
That Lord Gorman's a copper pinchin' miser anyhow. Weren't you there for that uproar over that uppity Ironborn's trial? His Lordship were diggin' deep at the Longshore coffers, an' makin' jokes about the maimin' sentence. Those Longshore men caused a real stir, and he were only satisfied when they offered more gold for the trouble."
*Meanwhile, I would like to say I am buying a mask in the Late Morning slot. I just wanna get this out of the way so I can be at the ball on Day 6, since we're already there on Day 6.*

Daveth entered the tourney!? You're pulling my leg. There's only two mystery knights and only the Knight of Stones has been knocked out so far. If Daveth rides and fights like that, Tomas would be wetting himself to make the boy his heir,"
Jon answers with an amazed expression.

No, I missed the trial, but Lord Gorman certainly knows how to turn a profit from the misfortunes of others,"
Jon agrees with a tight smile. "
That's hardly newsworthy, though. It's common enough for men of authority to make sure they come out ahead whenever people come to them for judgement. It ain't pretty, but it's the way of the world. I get the feeling that doesn't sit right with you, eh?"

No, it doesn't. There's no one way of the world. You can always recover what falls out of your hand, but your hand'll never fit back onto the stump of your wrist once it's off. A fine for when a fine's due, but only just. The Lords of Coldbrook and Mormont could teach Lord Tully a thing or two 'bout 'ways'."

I wonder how it would've been if Garret were the one on trial..."

No doubt they could, but answer me this - how would you say their treasuries match up against that of the Lord Paramount of the Trident? Your hand metaphor is apt, but you're also ignoring the fact that Lord Tully can afford to hack off a fair few hands before it'll do him any permanent damage;
when you're Lord Paramount, there's always another hand ready to wipe your arse in return for your favor."
Loreia Merrgal wrote:Her features soften as she adds gravely, "

"
Well, hopefully neither he, Daveth nor Lord Tomas would have been fool enough to call Lord Tully an idiot to his face and demand that he pay them for whatever trouble Garret might have caused. There's wisdom in learning when to keep your trap shut, Loreia."
"
Now, about that mask. May I suggest an equestrian theme? Perhaps a horse head, or better yet, a horse's arse?"
Jon says, laughing merrily.

So you at least caught wind of the trial, then. You don't have to tell me. If there was anyone in the great hall at the time who needed to learn that lesson, they got one hell of an example to really hit home."
"Jon Cobb wrote:"

If an arse is what's 'in' down south these days, I could skin yours off and have it made into one for you,"
she bluffs, appreciative of that Jon always has some joke on-hand to lighten the mood. They find a suitable mask which wasn't a burden or hindrance to wear, which was a horse mask.
"
Our house was able to reach an understandin' with the Tullisons,"
she states quite out of the blue. "
I know I asked you to help with that, but since we were able to solve the issue on our own, maybe there's somethin' else you can do for me instead."
She sounds like she has something in mind.
OOC: if that's not what I asked him to do for me when promising my support for Fendrel Bartheld, let me know and I will revise that.

Well I'm glad to hear that. Feuds are ugly, ugly things, and only nasty men like myself stand to profit from them in the end."
Hearing that she will now require some other service from him, Jon pauses and gives Loreia a mock look of alarm. "
Why do I get the feeling that I'm about to be asked to do something dreadfully embarrassing?"

"
Of course I can handle him,"
Jon laughs. "
Tomas and I go way back. But I do find your comparison unfair on one point - I'm a much better dancer than he is! Which reminds me - I insist you let me whirl you about the dance floor at the ball tomorrow evening,"
he finishes with a cocky grin.

The curse of castle Grenward strikes again. I thought I might be able to get a 6 to get 1 degree and get in 4 damage to your composure before the intrigue ends. You should offer terms for my yield next, no point in dragging this out further.
"
At the ball?"
She echoes. "
I'd have to remain alert for both of us, grizzly. Whose idea were the masks, anyway? Honestly, with what's been happenin' lately. Now, it'd be a good chance for you to whisper in Lord Kytley's ear if he were present...or maybe his eldest son?"
