Exchange 4
Yield offer: Loreia goes to Affectionate;
Jon agrees to try and convince Lord Kytley or other highborn Loreia names to support Garret.

Loreia Merrgal wrote:"
At the ball?"
She echoes. "
I'd have to remain alert for both of us, grizzly. Whose idea were the masks, anyway? Honestly, with what's been happenin' lately. Now, it'd be a good chance for you to whisper in Lord Kytley's ear if he were present...or maybe his eldest son?"
"
The masks are a grand Bartheld tradition. Brom and I first came across the idea in Lys - they throw some amazing revels in Lys,"
he says with a faraway look in his eyes. "
As a matter of fact, I'm going back there some day, and you should come with me. It'll do you good to see more of the world."

"
Anyway, the masks - have you ever noticed how people will do things they normally wouldn't when they think no one's watching? Well that's what the masks are for - to make people feel like no one's watching,"
Jon explains with wicked smile. "
With a bit o' luck, I'll end the evening rather drunk and not having to pay a pretty woman to share my bed! But before I get legless, I think I can find the time to chat up a lord or two for you."

(OOC: The convincing can be done wherever real time and available time slots allow. Not sure if we can use the Casque and Wren to improve an NCs disposition towards another NC, and I may not have time for another conversation during the Bartheld Party. But one way or another, Jon will do his best to gather support for Garret.)

OOC: Yield accepted. We could use the time slot for the Cask and Wren show for a closed thread where you find Lord Kytley and use the first roll from the challenge to get his attention, and then start talking about who should succeed Lord Tomas instead of completing the challenge.

"
Thank you, Jon. I knew I could count on you,"
she grins. "
It'd help for us to be assured of House Kytley's backing. And maybe you could talk to someone from House Marsten? I don't know if you'd speak to Lady Corrine, or Lady Isobel. I know the rumors aren't kind, but Corrine and Gwyneth seem to be in the habit of flirtin' with the blacks."

"
I don't now 'bout goin' to Lys...maybe if I brought Daveth along, Lord Coldbrook might give me leave. How long're you gonna visit? Castle Grenward'll always be my home, I'd not want that to get away from me."

She gives him a curious look as her hands come up to rest on her hips. "
You know, the rumor mill's been turnin', and they say lord Fendrel likes the color black. Does that have somethin' to do with why you're here in Riverrun?"

"
I shall do my best, Loreia. As for which Marsten is cracking the whip over there in the Vale, I'm not sure they know for themselves, but it'll likely be Lady Corrine once she gets married - which I understand to be occurring right soon,"
Jon replies, blithely ignoring any mention of the rumors concerning the younger Marsten ladies.

"
Oh, I won't be leaving any time soon! Too much to do here first, and besides, I wasn't planning on working for a living once I get there, so I'll need to secure a fat purse as well before leaving!"

"
Wouldn't be much of a mill if it didn't keep turning, would it?"
Jon quips, "
but you shouldn't trust everything you hear. I came here for the sport and the feasting, standing by Fendrel's claim came later."

"
As for the matter of Blacks and Greens, I don't really see how it's any of my concern - it's something for the real highborn to butt heads over. I will say one thing though - some of the most dangerous people in the world are people with principles. People like the Faith Militant, or people who insist that the Princess cannot be allowed to rule because it goes against tradition and custom - people who'll start a war because they have to have it their way. Now, I'm all for having standards, but principles? Those are downright scary."

That curious look stays on her face. "
Don't those...mean the same thing?"
she pushes, half doubting, and half asking the literal question.

"
The gold-leeching tutors I paid back in King's Landing would probably say so,"
Jon admits, "
but to me there's an important difference. For example, I'm a sellsword - I fight for money and kill whoever my employer thinks needs killing. When there's a real war on, I also loot and pillage, because no man gets rich off a soldier's wages alone. Now, many people would say that makes me an unprincipled thug, and they're probably right. But one thing I won't do, and I won't condone any man serving under me doing, is rape - and that's because I got standards. I don't expect anyone to thank me for it, and I don't expect the Seven'll judge me any less harshly for it, but my standards matter to me, and that's the only reason I need to stick with 'em."

"
A person with principles, on the other hand, believes that their hangups make them better than everyone else. They're always judging everyone around them, deciding whether other people are righteous enough. Usually it's just annoying, but when the principled person is someone with real power? That's when things get dangerous, 'cos it usually doesn't take them long to start wondering why they shouldn't be using their power to make the world right, no matter how many unrighteous people get crushed along the way."

OOC: Anything in particular you're trying to detect with the Awareness test?

*Specifically, whether Jon's being vague or outright lying about his real reason for being at the tourney, or whether he's lying about not choosing sides in the competition between the princess and the queen.*

"
Like the faith militant. I think I understand,"
she says, shifting uncomfortably. "
Well, I hope your new horse does you well in the joust today."
The tone of the statement implies a polite and subtle farewell.

OOC - Empathy test: He seems to be up front about why he came to the tourney, as well as about not having taken sides in the Green-Black conflict.
OOC - Underlying Facts: Fendrel hired Jon to represent him after they came to the tourney. Jon's opinions on the Green-Black conflict solidify during the Heated Debate event later in Day 5, at which time he decides to support the Blacks. So, you're just asking too early!

"
Yeah, like them. Creepy buggers,"
Jon says with obvious distaste, then brightens again at Loreia's mention of his new horse. "
I'm sure it will do me proud, but I'll keep it under wraps for a bit longer. I'll stick with the horse Ser Fendrel's loaned me - if I lose that, he'll be paying the ransom instead of me!"

"
Well, this turned out to be a much better morning than I'd hoped for. Take care, Loreia, and I'll see you at the ball tomorrow."
Jon gives Loreia a quick bow and a wave before making his way from the market with his new courser.
