Re: Against the Mountain Clans
What I've found through this and previous battles is that subtypes are really good, especially for better trained units. F.eks: the cavalery archer combination ensures that you can outrun any foe, but other cavalery. shoot at him from extremely long ranges AND being able to swipe in with lances out to finish all but the best units. Also: being the defender is always a good idea, as then you are almost ensured the first strike.
Nb: Remember the power of hidden units, they attack at the range they wish and gets big bonuses.

Also: if you do plan to lead forces: speck a little extra xp to warfare. Or if you want to go all out: Get leader of men.

Re: Against the Mountain Clans
Yeah, My low Warfare definitely was working against me. I mean, I had so much in my favor that it wasn't a huge deal, but in an otherwise more balanced encounter it would have been much worse.

Re: Against the Mountain Clans
Yeah, in my player group our master at arms has racked up 6 in warfare, if he wishes he may command the same unit to act 6 times and if they have low enough discipline he will most likely succeed. He may essentially wait his opponent out and then do 3 commands with the same unit, making them blitz through everything...

Re: Against the Mountain Clans
Overall, I feel like the reward from warfare as per the books is way too high for a game like this.
Taking your skirmish as an example Baelon (general comment, just taking your battle as an example, I know you did just as per the books) it seems crazy that this little fight gives as much glory as winning the melee plus a huge ransom (due to the status to wealth conversion, more than the winner of the joust) and power increase to boot...

Re: Against the Mountain Clans
well, to be fair, I rolled well for the power. If things had been going a little differently, that would have been a loss to power, not a gain.
As for the glory, in a tourney your life isn't on the line.
Also, did you see the -4 law?
Looking at the 2-1 wealth to law conversion and throwing the 2 glory in, other than the lucky power gain I just broke even.

Re: Against the Mountain Clans
I'll have to agree that rewards are too high compared to the risk, especially if you are the attacking party. However this encourages warfare and gives a new dimension to characters. Is the intrigue specialist also an inspiring leader? Is the combat monster a great tactician, or is he simply a brute? Does the rogue vagabond have a past from the stepstones, or is that something he made up? Does he have any experience from war whatsoever?
The rewards are unrealisticly high, but this only works to encourage players to be a little more well rounded.

This + Baelon's post on what he learned shows the kind of things we can all learn from the skirmishes. Tuning suggestions welcome in mechanics thread.

As ever, many thanks to the players for keeping things rolling while markets are nuts.

Which combat-oriented PCs are present during the war? If no PCs wish to step up(which I don't blame them.) then we could have Ser Markus battle him. It will surely make for drama win or lose.

Sorry, but he would completely crush me... I also think that sending Markus may be a bad idea, we have some crazy good pcs, and then its better to wipe the clans completely for champions

So that leaves Kevan(commander), Dyana(sub-commander), Jorah(sub-commander), and Loreia(hero). Start chanting for someone Yoren. You can peer pressure them. :;

Homana homana ehhhh homana homana ehhhh
Hopefully this should produce a champion:) If none of those wishes, I think that you or baelon could take another one, the first one barely scratched you;

Re: Against the Mountain Clans
As Baelon pointed out my fight could have easily went bad. One shot at the odds is enough for me.
Since no one is stepping forward...
... Ben steps back off the volunteer line. :;

I don't think we can double up, but if we can I'll do it. I'd rather someone else step up, for narrative and player inclusiveness reasons.

Just step back Baelon. The last man/woman standing on the line is the volunteer.

It would be cool if Dyana or Loreia wanted to do it.

With that AR and that CD? He's begging to die. And by the hand of a woman, with that taunt. I'm all for it. I think it should be either me or Dyana.

Finally got time to review the PC v clan personal combats, a good mix here. Ben's fight is indeed "
Rocket Tag"
and a warning to everyone on the importance of early blows with skilled combatants.
Loreia's victory was hard earned but I enjoyed it, good drama. She's a Black icon and has earned her (religiously inappropriate) nickname. Baelon appears to be his alleged father's son, at least with sword in hand. Forging a formidable reputation given the trial by combat, Marei's Seven, the melee, defating a vengeful Royce and now this!
Many thanks to the PCs for making these good roleplay scenes as well as mechanical fun.

Ok! Looks like we need two battlefield layouts and some volunteer Clansmen commanders(2).
