Daveth's first instinct, on realising that he wanted to know who was the Blackwood commander in the conflict that crossed the Darry border, was simply to ask. That was a known event they were supposed to be investigating. It would hardly be hostile to ask him to give his side of events. But something inside stopped him. Some instinctive paranoia made him think that, at least to start, it's best to gain information while revealing as little as possible. Once he knew the man's identity, then he could plan his next move properly.

Subtly, and using misdirection to hide his intent, Daveth uses his new network to learn about the commander.
