[King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard 126/1 AL
On the steps outside White Sword tower, Ser Jorah Holt rises with a pristine white cloak on his shoulders, the handsome Ser Criston Cole smiling proudly as a nearby crowd cheers.

Smallfolk and noble, black and green, all agree on Ser Jorah's mettle.

The applause is thunderous and well-earned in sweat and blood.

It is a picturebook day, all bright Spring sunshine and clear air. The kind of day a boy dreams of, yet only Seven will bear the white cloak at any one time. The day was not soured by a funeral for the late Ser Rickard Thorne, with Ser Jorah's predecessor having passed many months ago, finally succumbing to a wound earned protecting Prince Aemond from rioters during Lord Gorman Tully's great tourney at Riverrun.

Written in Ser Criston Cole's fine penmanship within the hallowed pages of the White Book for visitors to inspect is the following. Many in the crowd take the rare opportunity to read the words recounting the deeds of the order's newest member. Some study the words reverently, others for signs of weakness, while yet more can be pretend to read, unlettered as they are.

Words are dangerous things however, and not all authors - or readers - are kindly.

Ser Jorah of the family Holt. Son of Ser Symon Holt, a sworn sword to House Coldbrook. Served as squire to his father at House Coldbrook's Castle Grenward. Knighted after valiantly taking command of Lady Aliana Coldbrook's escort after its commander fell to members of the Faith Militant, driving them off.
Participated in Lord Gorman Tully's Grand tournament, defeating Ser Kyle Crakehall and Lord Lymond Mallister in the melee before falling, overwhelmed, to the Guardswoman Loreia, the so-called 'Warrior's Shieldmaiden'. Overthrew renowned captain Ser Heward Storm and Ser Harrold Darke in the lists before falling to the eventual runner-up, Ser Kevan Lyras.
Rode with Lord Dunstan Tullison to rescue a maid of common birth from Ser Lionel Darry's remnant Faith Militant riders, slaying the ill-made knight himself in single combat. Defeated the rapist Ser Benjen Frey in a trial by combat, standing for the Seven and all true knights to again defend a woman of common birth. By these victories, earning the sobriquet "
The Just"
by popular acclaim.
Led a contingent of Coldbrook troops in Lord Benedict Marsten's allied force against the mountain clans in the victorious Battle Beneath Bull's Peak.
Commanded an allied Coldrook &
Darry force in defeating remnants of the Faith militant uprising, having previously captured their captain Ser Duncan Haiges.
Part of the royal force gathered under the banner of King Viserys I to bring peace to the warring House of Bracken and Blackwood, saving Prince Aemond Targaryen from a wildfire explosion by strength of body and courageous will. Led Coldbrook, Drakeson and Kytley men in defeating Merrick the Red's mercenary looters, bring the Peace of King Viserys I to House Bracken and Blackwood. By lance and sword slew the robber knight Ser Wyll Rivers, a hedge knight disrupting trade and trouble in Battle Valley.
Avenged the insult to the royal family by tracking those responsible for the assault on Prince Aemond Targaryen to their warrens and defeating them, returning their purloined wildfire to the safekeeping of the Alchemist's guild.
Champion of Lord Haig Bracken's peace tourney, defeating Ser Andrew Bracken, Lord Davain Bartheld and Ser Tymon Lannister.
Rescued Lady Lily Daleford from unkind foreign hands in a daring raid Saltpans, travelling only with a few select companions to ensure secrecy.
Named to the Kingsguard in his thirtieth year by Lord Commander Ser Criston Cole.

Hundreds of miles away in the very North of the Riverlands, a woman shall soon pay for what was set down in ink.

It is always the weak that suffer.

Daveth was pleased and proud this day. While if Ser Jorah weren't such a good knight, there would have been no possibility of getting him into the Kingsguard, Daveth couldn't help but believe that if it weren't for his help smoothing over the political rough edges, Ser Jorah wouldn't have been admitted. As such, today was a vindication of both a good knight and good work.

He carefully studies the entry in the White book, a small smile of pride touching his face when he reads about Ser Jorah gaining his sobriquet. After that, he tries to pick up any relevant rumours, since he's in the capital, particularly about House Velaryon, what with the favour they owed him giving him something of an 'in' with that powerful, influential house.

[King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard Empty Re: [King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard

Post by Baelon Drakeson Sat Feb 27, 2016 10:49 pm

In all his travels, there was one place that Baelon had specifically avoided - King's Landing. Looking as he did, with the names he had and what they meant. It was just asking for trouble....
...but he wasn't just some bastard hedge knight anymore. He was lord, respected by his peers, people, and superiors alike. Ser Jorah being inducted into the Kingsguard was an occasion he could not - would not - miss.

He spent some time examining Ser Jorah's entry in the White Book. He has a nagging feeling that something was missing, or left out... something about the Queen... but whatever. Whatever it was must not have been important enough.

As he mills through the crowd he hears somebody say something that sounded vaguely disparaging about the Goldcloaks... but he doesn't quite catch what it was or who said it. Probably someone just whinging about not being allowed closer or something like that.

[King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard Empty Re: [King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard

Post by Kevan Lyras Sat Feb 27, 2016 11:14 pm

Kevan was overwhelmed by the city. Sure, he had developed quite a bit in recent years, the events in the last few months had made him much more than a simple sworn sword and especially the treaty negotiations improved his political sensitivity, but here at King's Landing, he felt like a child among men. A yokel making his way into town for the very first time.
He carefully read the white book taking special interest to the page of his friend Jorah.
I made it into the white book! It is written that I defeated him in the tourney, ol' Jorah wont like that! He had to smirk at that thought...

Overall, Ser Kevan was way too overwhelmed by the city itself to spend much time hunting for secrets - or at least not very successfully.

Luecian keeps his eyes alert for any strange going ons in the city but of course almost everything seemed odd to the rustic huntsman in this setting.

He then asks around trying to find out about local mercenary troop movements but the city residents were old hand at this game and talked often while actually saying little.

For her part, Gwyneth was beside herself with glee at a chance to step into King's Landing. The fabled city of kings and queens! The impregnable Red Keep! The vast harbor! The throngs of people! The money changing grubby hands, the lords and ladies in their colorful fabrics, and under it all the whispers in the shadows that moved the pieces in the great game of thrones.

And it was so much warmer!

She threw herself into it all, devouring the White Book entry maybe a little too fast to see every word, but with keen awareness of the spirit of it. And once she had a chance, she was quick to begin nosing around, dropping little hints to people in the know about Battle Valley. A very specific set of Houses were named to investigate, and it seemed so very odd didn't it? Whyever had the King chosen them?

Septon Arlyn wanders around kings landing. The smell of shit was not as rank as it used to be, thanks to Septon Barth's insistence on the construction of sewers. he was a wise man. It was good that he was a friend of the great King. I remember my father would always sing his praises. Makes me wonder why so many of the people in the Faith took a dislike to him. Sure he was a little unorthodox, but he did so much for the betterment of the realm. Hell, before he made the suggestion I would have had to travel through the swamps and such to reach kings landing as their would have been no kings road.

Septon Arlyn continues to wander around, conversing with the people of Kings landing. A few paid him respects given towards a Septon as he wandered about flee bottom. However most were to busy with their own hustle and bustle of day to day life that they paid him no mind. life is so different here. the Septon mused, I made much more progress in Maidenpool walking around, as there was not the same press if people, yet people world stop and talk more often, slowing the pace of things that way. Here is like being swept along in the tide of humanity, with each person's business more private and secretive then the next.

Septon Arlyn finishes his tour around old town then makes his way for the red keep. When challenged by the gaurd he let them know he was here for Jorahs ascension he was shepherded through and follow the throngs to where that happening was taking place.

The Septon listened to the conversations around him, trying to place and piece together what he knows with what he has heard. Suddenly the Septon gets the feeling of being here before, having done this in a long distant place.

[size=200:jswub3kt] pay attention thunders a commanding voice. Septon Arlyn's eyes snap up towards the front of the crowd and he sees it. The thing on his dream that was not a dream.

"
Oh gods."
The Septon whispers to himself and his face grows pale, the normal ruddy color drained from his cheeks. His fists clinch into hard balls and the Septon's knuckles crack with the force of him holding them still.

[King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard Empty Re: [King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard

Post by Septon Arlyn Sun Feb 28, 2016 5:46 pm

A man is an odd color dress and demeanor slips through the crowd, just before the Septon could give chase. A shiver runs down Septon Arlyn's spine and a cold sweat breaks off Arnie's across his brow. Who was that man? I have never seen him before. Why did my legs falter me when I tried to give pursuit. Perhaps someone else would have a better idea of who he is. Nathan always seems to know who people are. Or perhaps Lady Gwyn? . Septon Arlyn quickly fills in the Dulver's who were with him on what he just saw. He then sets off on a search for some one who might have more answers then he does.

(OOC, if Lady Marsten, Samuel, Gwyn or Nathan wish to speak with the Septon about what he saw then he us willing to enlist their aid, as they have been helpful to the Septon before and the Septon has "
a bad feeling about this"
)

(Well he is looking for her, so if she will see him then we can move forward with that.)

Septon Arlyn moves through the crowd until he catches a glimpse of the golden curly hair of Lady Gwyn. Beside her stands the silvery haired form of Lord Drakeson. of course he would be here. I had best ask Lady Gwyn to speak in private. The walls have ears and in a crowd you never know who might be listening.

My Lady Gwyn, Lord Baelon, "
is that how these Black's wish to be called upon? By women first then the man. Gods damn educate gets confusing "
I noticed something strange, and add you have helped me before in the Pennytree investigation I feel you may have been if help here."
now how do I tactfully say this, "
it will just be a moment of you would allow me to barrow your lovely wife so I might pick her brain for a few moments."
Septon Arlyn gestures to the back of the room, hinting that he wished to speak in private.

[King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard Empty Re: [King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard

Post by Baelon Drakeson Sun Feb 28, 2016 6:40 pm

Was that an intentional insult, or does he just not know to address the head of house first? No, this isn't the time or place to make a stink of it. If it was intentional, best not give satisfaction;
if accidental, then it's not worth making a scene and disrupting Ser Jorah's moment.

"
Septon..."
Baelon's tone is not particularly welcoming, but also not dismissive or threatening. The two men's history was... complicated.

I doubt the Septon would intentionally be part of a plot to harm Gwyn... but I also doubt he would be able to stop his Dulver compatriots if they decided to do so... not to mention anyone else here in King's Landing that might wish us ill.

"
...I'm sure you can understand that in this crowd I would not want to be separated from my wife? I might never see her again."

That last sentence is delivered as though he is simply joking about becoming lost in the crowd, but the look in his eyes says otherwise.

"
Surely whatever you have ask Lady Gwyneth can be asked in my presence just as well?"

He gestures for the Septon to lead them.

[King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard Empty Re: [King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard

Post by Septon Arlyn Sun Feb 28, 2016 7:33 pm

well hopefully Lord Drakeson can have some restraint and not go off arresting every Dornish man loyal to the queen in sight. It at least let's hope his Lady wife can stay his hand until we gather more evidence. "
very well,"
states the Septon, and he begins to move through the crowd to the empty alcove.

I wonder what Lord Baelon is concerned about. As far as I know house Drakeson would be too young to have many enemies in kings landing.

As they reach the alcove Septon Arlyn turns back to Lord and Lady Drakeson, and waits until any curious glances had fallen away and returned to looking up at Ser Jorah. He begins speaking of the weather and travels. As well as Lord Redwain's wedding and congratulationing Lord Baelon on his conquests in the joust. After he was fairly certain that anyone listening would grow bored of listening to the big Septon ramble before turning to the that he wished to discuss. "
There was a Dornish man, dressed in green, that seemed particularly interested in Ser Jorahs book entirety. There was something off about him, but I could not place his face, as I have never met him before."

Septon Arlyn turns his head from Lord and Lady Drakeson. "
I do not know much about dorne, but I know they are an honorable people, I also know that Ser Jorah delivered the chests of gold to Aemond, along with the incriminating letters against house Wyl. What if house Wyl is not the only Dornish house to side with the queen. What if they are upset by this action of Ser Jorah and wish to undo the good works Ser Jorah has done?"

Septon Arlyn pauses before continuing,

"
I have great respect for Ser Jorah, and I would hate to see his transition to the kings guard marred by an undoing of his good deeds. Do you think you can help me find this man? Or at least help protect Ser Jorah from dangers he can not see?"

[King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard Empty Re: [King's Landing] Ser Jorah’s Ascension to the Kingsguard

Post by Loreia Sun Feb 28, 2016 7:36 pm

Loreia's countenance shines as pristine as the cloak, feeling every bit as noble in temper that day as the highborn ladies in attendance. She adds her voice to the praising applause of the crowd gathered to welcome the new Kingsguard man.

She waits patiently, following Daveth to look over the book once to see how they chose to praise the man who was her role model, and for a short time before that her idol.

When finished, she goes back over it again, hanging on a particular set of statements. Then a particular statement, then a brief mention. It is not for clarity or slowness of mind that she rereads what is written in the White Book. Her countenance seems to lose much of its celebratory luster.

She will accompany Lord Daveth on his errands and explorations in King's Landing during their visit, mindful of how Ser Jon Cobb chose to describe the city's cultural climate to her many moons ago.

To gain a hint toward what it is that upsets Loreia. OOC, you could probably know already.
