Why wait so long? A knife in the dark could solve a lot of problems. Gillian would inherit, but need a regent/protector named. That covers you for a few years, then arrange a marriage with a suitably pliant or friendly groom.... by then Gillian should be quite friendly towards House Marsten, too.

Corrine will likely disappoint you then. She's trying to do good through fair play, though either she'll learn enough of the game to play effectively, or the Westerosi Doom will get her.

I'm not sure if I'm pulling it off with gusto, but I am an exposed mystery knight, who is a woman, and who killed a war hero while disguised. So. I consider that fucking up a bit.

Development is definitely my intention. The lovey-doveyness may not seem interesting, but it's building up that relationship so that it'll be all the more horrible when bad shit goes down.

A Song of Ice and Fire is all about defeat and complications. Every victory only sets up a worse defeat down the road. No one lives happily ever after.

If we won all the time it would be boring. Really, the key to being viewed as a success isn't to win at everything - that isn't possible.

That might be going a step too far - I think one of the brilliant things about the series is that every victory comes at a cost, but it's not like the costs outweigh the victories. Indeed, we don't really see anyone checking out completely - even those that seem to give up end up finding something to fight for, a shred of hope or a sense of purpose. Just because there are no storybook endings doesn't mean its not worth fighting the good fight. No one wins absolutely - but no one loses absolutely either. I think one of Martin's recurring themes (in other writings as well as ASoiaF) is just that - life isn't about winning or losing, it's about what happens in the meantime.

But there I go waxing philosophic again.
