Tywin kept Westeros afloat for 20 years, I agree that he might have been able to prevent some serious stuff from getting as bad as it did. But then, thats why he died. The show couldn't dumb him down and he kept getting in the way.
Edit: I still want Tywin and Blackfish back !

Pshh. Tywin kept Westeros from sinking into the messes that he created by his ambitions.
Without Tywin's ambition, Cersei would have been wed - or at least betrothed - before the Rebellion. She had plenty of offers, Tywin refused them all, as he had ambitions to be the grandfather to Kings.
Without Cersei, Robert's heirs would have been legitimate.
Without illegitimate heirs:
- The war of five kings wouldn't have happened
- The Sparrows would not have become a thing
- The faith militant would still be banned
- The list of people still alive and in Westeros who are not in the books is staggering
- Griff and co. would be facing a (more or less) unified 7K, and probably would not have gone public... yet. If ever.
Need I go on?

Re: General Non-game Chat Thread
Well, Book Stannis is kind of inconsistently characterized, so I liked that they fixed that for the show, and let him fight in the battle of the Blackwater. But what he did to Shireen on the show is just totally out of character for the character presented in the books. But book Stan the Man is the one I wanted to see win the War of Five Kings.
For that matter, young Griff is only a threat because Tywin had Aegon killed when he didn't need to. Tywin almost always resorts to violence even when it's counterproductive. If he'd have lived, he'd just have tried to crush the Sparrows with military might and made the situation worse.
Besides, he's not that competent. He loses a battle to Edmure Tully, a character whose major defining trait is that he's terrible at everything.

This is the most recent I believe:
http://bitw.boards.net/
However I tried that as well, but without having a log-in you cannot access the play-forum, it seems. :-/
Then there is another one "
Southron ambitions"
, but that does not seem to exist anymore without the way-back machine and even then only in fragments.

Thanks! Too bad that we can't see the actual game though, but just to see how the characters were brings inspiration to me.
I still think that the way back machine sounds like something out of dr. who

I started with Blood in the Water. The biggest difference between the two? DD has lasted, BitW did not even make it to the end of the first story. Narrator burn-out, I think.
We should all bear in mind that it is a massive endeavor to keep a game like this running, and be grateful that Reader is so dedicated and determined to make it work.

I was in Southron Ambitions! It was a lot of fun, but again...narrator burnout.
These huge games with vast casts and set against the backdrop of slowly scrolling history are MUY hard on a narrator, I think.

I certainly think he'd have been a better wartime king. Makes me even sadder for Tommen. He'd have been a good king in peacetime, I think.

Definitely. I'm running a simplified SIFRP system game for 2 people just now once a week and even that is exhausting.

He could have become a good king, perhaps...but in the end, I think he lacked the steel for it. He'd have been forever at the mercy of whoever he wanted to like him. The best case scenario is that he would be the vessel through which Margery ruled. And that wouldn't have been a bad thing, overall, I think. She was cunning and manipulative, but seemed to have a genuinely decent heart under it all.

I was never sure how much of Margaery's "
decent heart"
was real and how much was a facade to gain the support of the people.

Given that we are a prequel to the books, could we accuse George Martin of stealing our character ideas?

Considering prequels are written after the original... nope. (Sorry to be a party pooper.)

I agree. GM-ing can be very taxing and prone to burning out quickly. So, my hat off to you, Reader!

May have another player coming over from the Green Ronin forum who was asking about PBP. He messaged me when I suggested joining this game and asked if I played in Blood in the Water, so I suspect he's another veteran from that game

Re: General Non-game Chat Thread
Welcome, Arryk!
A Darkwood, interesting. I was literally reading about them just yesterday - reading up on Tywin led me to the Defiance of Duskendale. Weird coincidence is weird.
Little is known House Darkwood, except that they serve House Darklyn along with House Darke, House Dargood, and House Hollard (one of these things is not like the others);
in the future (relative to our game), they will survive the destruction of House Darklyn (it's a bad idea to kidnap the King! Shame they didn't kill him, it would have prevented a lot of strife... damn you Ser Barristan Selmy, for doing your job so well.)
The Darklyns are in the crownlands, sworn directly to the Targaryans. In canon, they sided with the Blacks (having close ties to Princess Rhaenyra). Of course, that means nothing about how this particular Darkwood will lean...
