Okay, another intrigue question before I get into my post in earnest.

Does an intrigue have to be verbal? In this case, Gwyn is trying to influence Dunstan largely nonverbally...it feels a little weird to have her chatting with him with what I'm thinking. It kind of sours the buzz, kills the mood...

Is that okay, or do I need to blather at him?

This is fun, different and creative. Words not needed. Possible to Persuade (intimidate/seduce) without words, and probably a bunch of the other options too. Bravo!

As noted in the mechanical discussion thread, you have my sympathy and my full support for asking that Reader retcon his latest rulings. It's not "
just a feat"
, it's the mechanical foundation of your character's capabilities that's being attacked. To use an unpopular term these days - it's not fair play.

The whole build-up was awesome, but this now just makes it a farce in terms of the whole story...

Worst case I simply hit the mother of all retcon buttons and hit the fight with - Athelstan's desired Axe fighter benefit, no disengagement and then I implement these afterwards and Athelstan and I retcon his character.

Denies Baelon his moment in the sun, but he's pretty grown up and will hopefully understand there are other cool moment to come. Not fair on him to face an Axe Fighter I benefit that isn't working inline with one version of the linked rules.

For what it's worth, I don't think a player should feel like they have to give up a course of action, especially a defeat with severe roleplay consequences, because of a change to a rule or a misinterpretation during character building. Rule #1 is to have fun. He could retcon the weapon he has and knows how to use well, but that doesn't bode well for desire for that weapon and associated qualities in the future(means less axe brandishing). Why would an NC bother with the axe quality if the sword quality is clearly more preferable? This is a mechanical issue, and if any retconning is to be done, it should be done mechanically.

Loreia, I don't entirely understand exactly what you'd like, sorry. On current form this is probably a further failing on my part!

Lots of reasons to still pick axes (indeed, the battleaxe without qualities is better than the longsword due to the damage bump and Axe Fighter II is probably better than Axe FIghter I). If people want to kick this around, then please make a thread for it.

The battleaxe was deliberately upgraded over the base game to encourage variety. Don't think axe users can complain about that.

Responding here to avoid cluttering the AFK thread.

- PC v PC with no disengagement but axe fighter I doesn't go through armour
- PC v NPC with no disengagement and stronger version of axe fighter I
- In both cases, disengagement and my ruling on axe fighter I come in post fight and Athelstan can rebuild character
- This should be fair to everyone, but happy to hear alternatives

As the player on the receiving end of Axe Fighter 1 in this fight, I vote for continuing the fight as we started it having any mechanical changes apply afterwards.
Let Athelstan use the stronger version of AF1 and have there be no Free Attacks for disengaging, and don't restart the fight. Just pick up with round 2, I will re-add in the AF1 damage I had in my initial round 1 post.
