Seriously though, I didn't think it was THAT controversial.
I wrote Baelon's tone largely based on the conversation that he and Daveth had on Day 1. They haven't really spoken since.
Based on that and the content of the initial offer, Baelon sees House Marsten as having the position of strength.
Whether he is right or not is a separate matter that should play out in that thread, not here.

I certainly hope that there's an out-of-character understanding/translation for what's being said. Because I am showing restraint over this stuff about equating bazaar haggling to table negotiations, and the idea that getting offended is a risk only to the offended party.

): then what they are disagreeing about is simply this particular circumstance. It's like the second degree unknown formula, you came with the formula, now they are simply questioning if A or C is the X^2.
I won't say which opinion is right, all I'm saying is that I am not sure that they disagree about much:)

I don't think you're doing anything wrong.
In business deals big and small, haggling in some form is usually expected, and therefore no insult is inherently given by doing so.

So, yeah. This is my take on the matter.

Baelon is playing a *very* aggressive negotiation game. After this point:

If Lady Gwyneth hadn't stepped in, my next step would have been to say 'Okay, good luck with that. When you want to give a serious starting offer, my door remains open.' and turn and leave (giving the option for them to change their mind then and there. But if they didn't, that would it for that negotiation).

But here's the thing: Daveth never took actual *offence* at Baelon's words. He is smart enough (and likes Baelon enough) to recognise it as a bargaining technique, rather than a 'true' insult. The walking away wouldn't be off in a huff, it would be 'play hardball with me, and I won't break. Give me a fair deal, or none.' And either way, Daveth wouldn't hold a grudge against Baelon. It's just business - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And if you're not prepared to offer *any* coin, it won't.
