It's a pretty standard contract worker arrangement, as opposed to the one-time payment of buying a product.
Much lower risk (for the contractor/developer), because if there are development delays it costs the hiring company more rather than cutting into the bottom line of the developer.

That's a good point... Really we would should only need to supply Castle Grenward with 1 or 2 ravens for emergency use - it's not like our ravens can be used send reports to Castle Grenward, they wouldn't know how to find it. You have to raise your own and bring them with you for that. Non-emergency reports can be brought by a messenger on a swift horse.

Marstens probably have Ravens that knows their way to most places in the Vale, but they likely do not have many that can go elsewhere. And odds are that there aren't really any ravens trained to go to castle Grenward to begin with, or so I understand Daveth's musing about how hard it is to train them?

Also, Marsten don't have a maester present, so their raven network might be somewhat diminished from what it used to be.
